How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

Meat most days if not every day, mix of chicken, beef and pork; occasionally lamb but only when it’s on offer due to cost. Fish once a week maybe twice if we see something that’s a bargain. Rarely eat veggie meals but will sometimes choose veggie curry for a meal from Cook as they have a couple I like.

Autienotnautie · 21/03/2023 04:59

Meat is full of protein. We eat meat 3 days a week and have 4 non meat days. It's better for environment and cheaper too. Lentils, pulses, nuts are all good for protein or you could have protein powder. I take iron tablets but I am often low in iron.

Forever42 · 21/03/2023 06:33

I am surprised how much meat and fish everyone is eating. It's so expensive! We usually only have mince or sausages, occasionally chicken (although I do buy free range which puts the price up). Fish we pretty much only get basa now or eat from a tin. Gave up on salmon long ago except as an occasional treat.

Eating highly processed veggie/vegan food isn’t good for you, just as too much red meat/cheese etc. isn’t good for you. What gives one person energy based on physique and physical effort is not the same for everyone.

Morally I understand the argument to be vegetarian. Saying it’s better environmentally is disingenuous since it depends on so many factors and what is being eaten.

Yes..But no one needs to eat processed food.Because locally grown vegetables are freely available. I have never eaten fake meat.

SixPenny · 21/03/2023 06:56

Twice, sometimes three times daily.

SixPenny · 21/03/2023 06:57

No way am I eating fake meat or that plant based shit.
I want proper meat on my plate which has come from a proper animal.

where are people getting locally grown avocados and almond milk (for example) in the UK.

I always see this argument on MN.. Vegetarian cultures across the world don't eat avocados or almond milk. Why would I? 40% of India isn't eating avocadoes:)

I dont eat 'plant based shit' either. I just eat plants.

Curseofthenation · 21/03/2023 07:10

We eat x1 red meat meal, x3 white meat meals, x1 fish meals and x2 vegan meals a week. A lot of the white meat meals contain very little meat though, say x1 chicken breast between three in a risotto.

I do not understand if people eat a varied balanced diet there is no need for supplements

Of all those sports people how many of them manage veganism without the need of supplements?

I take a multivitamin because in this country we get insufficient vitamin d and it is recommended everyone supplement it because we don’t get sufficient vit d from the sun here Oct-March, especially those of us with darker skin tones. Nothing to do with diet. It is also important to take b12 as that’s what animals are injected with because our soil is depleted. Most people don’t get enough b12. And many none vegans take vitamins.
I’ll stick to my healthy plant based diet and daily multivitamin - feeling great!

I’m vegan and don’t eat either - but I know plenty of none vegans who do! It’s such an odd assumption that we eat avocados.
I have a local veg box which is seasonal. I also drink uk oat milk.

Every day like most people.

Eating so much meat and fish is barbaric and cruel and we know the suffering it causes but we pretend we don't.

Food crops used to feed the animals we eat coukd relieve the world's ginger problems.

But hey no worries mate buy your steak.

No they couldn't because the issue is bigger than just "let's ship them spare food from elsewhere"

Private jets at COP26 reportedly created just at that event about as much emmissions as 1600 average scpts in a year. Ordinary people's diet is not the issue...

I agree insecticides should be really redesigned or changed. But that issue the same goes for plants we eat too. Have you seen people freak out if they spot bugs on their veggies or fruit?

So yes, no worries, I will eat my steak

Never.
I take vegan supplements and I feel fine.
does dead flesh increase your energy so much it's worth eating?

Plants are dead things that were alive too.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 21/03/2023 08:54

Never, as I'm vegan.

A recent blood test has told me I'm severely anaemic, so am currently on iron tablets. I suspect an underlying issue though, as I've been diagnosed with severe anaemia before and it was when I ate loads of meat all the time.

I suggest getting your ferritin levels checked and seeing how you're doing that way. If they are in the realms of normal (and not near the bottom end) then the meat effect (ie perceived energy boost) may be imagined.

I don't eat any meat or fish and haven't for the past 32 years.

My energy levels are good as i make sure that i include a wide variety of food in our diets.

I find my energy levels are controlled by my mental health rather than if I eat meat or fish.

It isn't barbaric at all, it's perfectly civilised and indeed good to raise animals on the land and by doing that put delicious, nutritious food like eggs, milk, meat on people's tables. Thank God there are people in the world doing this, and how lucky modern people are to forget how close we can be to starvation in days.

Mewling about how other people are terrible and cruel for it is your right, but it doesn't make it so for everyone. A human being eating a bacon sandwich is no worse than someone wearing a show or reading a book.

As for "the environment" people repeating this want to stop and speak to a farmer. Intensive arable farming is what kills land stone dead, and animals are what rejuvenate it. We have less than a hundred years of harvests left in our soil because of this and that is the problem to fix, and if we could switch everythjng to arable with a wish, and do it enough to feed everyone with eg soy we'd probably have tracts of dust bowl across the UK inside 50 years. This is to say nothing of the arable practices we would need to import and their potential effect on local wildlife, especially pollinators without which we all die.

So I presume your diet contains only food that bees are not involved in help grow?

ConcordeOoter · 21/03/2023 09:16

Wearing a shoe. Don't wear a show, that can't be hygeinic.

bamboowarrior · 21/03/2023 09:50

Love you guys justifying eating meat coz of bees!!!!

Try harder!!!!

Not advocating starving ourselves to death

Just eating with wisdom yknow and kindness

Oh wait course meat eaters are in total denial

So you just keep eating your steak and wear your ignorance and brutality 👏👏👏 well done 👏 ✔️

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2023 09:55

About 3 times a week.
DD is a vegetarian and it had meant I can cook pretty good meals without meat now. DH is the same as me but DS is a die hard carnivore so I usually add meat to whatever he’s having or offer a meat/fish alternative for him
