How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

Most days.

WandaWonder · 20/03/2023 20:26

Most days, I have issues with B12

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 20/03/2023 20:26

With probably around 90% of meals. I try to eat seasonally as much as possible with the main staples locally sourced.

dripdripdripdrip · 20/03/2023 20:28

daily.

SunshineAndMonsteras · 20/03/2023 20:32

I am always surprised how little fo6sh people eat for island nations.

I would say 75% of my meals have fish or meat. Rest is eggs or cheese

MrsJBaptiste · 20/03/2023 20:33

Every day. Today I've had tuna, salmon, chorizo and salami for lunch and chicken Kiev for dinner.

This week's meal plan includes a mixture of chicken, mince and fish. However if we ever order pizza or a curry, I'll always get the veggie option 🤔

thaegumathteth · 20/03/2023 20:35

Never as I'm vegetarian. I am knackered but I've been vegetarian almost my whole life.

Dd(12) is pescatarian and has fish maybe twice a week. Definitely full of energy!

Ds (16) has meat every day, fish maybe once a fortnight. Dinner wise he probably has meat 4/7.

Dh has meat probably 4/7 days. Fish same as ds about once a fortnight.

Snugglemonkey · 20/03/2023 20:47

Every day. I do eat meat free meals too, but at least once a day, I have some type of meat or fish.

Never.
I take vegan supplements and I feel fine.
does dead flesh increase your energy so much it's worth eating?

There's always one.

Bearing in mind 5 weeknight dinners + 4 weekend lunches and dinner, over the course of 9 main meals we eat

Chicken 5 x
Salmon 2x
Lamb 1x
Eggs 1x (or takeaway night!)

We are two late 30s, and a 7 yo and 3 yo. We do a half side of salmon twice a week - we are huge salmon fans. Roast lamb once a week, chicken rest of the time. 7 yo also has a duck egg for breakfast. Amidst a wider balanced diet this rota of protein from animal sources keep us happy and functioning. We wouldn’t eat red meat more than 1 meal a week, and we wouldn’t decrease salmon to under twice a week. The chicken is just the basic main protein in between .

EmotionalSupportWyrm · 20/03/2023 21:06

meat maybe a couple of times a year - if I'm invited to someone's home I will eat what is put in front of me. The last meat I had was at christmas. Fish probably a couple of times a month, I'm partial to Salmon. If I eat out I will often choose a nice fish dish. Most of the time, at home, I cook veggie dishes, lots of beans. lentils, etc.

I definitely don't notice any increase in energy after eating fish or meat.

Divorcedalongtime · 20/03/2023 21:07

Never

MintJulia · 20/03/2023 21:10

Normally...

Fish twice a week
Chicken once
Pork once
Eggs/cheese twice a week
Veggie once or twice

I run Parkrun, and find I have more energy & better times if I've had a risotto with cheese or similar the evening before.

Meat/fish/veggie doesn't seem to make any difference for me.

I have a medical condition that means if I don’t eat red meat I will have low heamaglobin and that means I could need a blood transfusion (it’s happened in the past) so I try and eat once or twice a week.
i like fish so I eat that too about 4-5 times a week but this is mostly a lunch thing as it can not be so filling (I find)
i often have plain oats or weetabix for breakfast, what do others have?

OoooohMatron · 20/03/2023 21:22

Everyday. Not at every meal but it would be rare for us to eat vegetarian food at every meal on a single day. I just prefer meat and fish and I don't particularly care about the environmental factors.

I'm the same. I love red meat and fish so I won't stop any time soon.

bakewellbride · 20/03/2023 21:32

I'm a vegetarian and have lots of energy.

I have porridge with nuts and banana four days a week and eggs on toast with mushrooms and tomato three days a week. A pack of bacon between us over a weekend about once a month.

Siameasy · 20/03/2023 21:45

Daily. I eat two meals a day and both will contain flesh. I do best on animal fats and low processed carbs. Meat is really filling too, especially fattier cuts like duck. I tried carnivore but I missed veg so much.

StarDolphins · 20/03/2023 21:47

I used to eat meat but then I would only eat organic & now I don’t eat it much, maybe once a year if my friend does it but I would never choose it. I eat fish/eggs etc & have sardines on toast most lunchtimes.

can’t you get ferritin/energy from things like spinach/beetroot

Emmamoo89 · 20/03/2023 21:47

I eat meat every day

Yes, millions of people get ferritin this way. The alternative to meat does not have to be fake meat.

But each to own. I don't eat meat because I don't like it, just as people don't like beetroot or spinach.

OneCup · 20/03/2023 21:57

We eat meat roughly three times a week and fish twice. The rest (all breakfasts, all lunches and roughly two dinners) is vegetarian. I could happily eat Fish and seafood every day and forget about meat but my family wouldn't be too keen!

XenoBitch · 20/03/2023 21:58

Meat - pretty much every day. Fish - once a week.

AffIt · 20/03/2023 21:58

My diet is about 2/5 vegetarian (lacto-ovo, so eggs and dairy as standard), 1/5 pescatarian, 2/5 completely vegan-based. I don't eat meat usually.

A few times a year, I have what I call a 'meat week', when I'll eat wild game - shot birds, venison etc.

I admit I feel better after those occasional meat weeks.

I'm getting to the stage where I think my diet is less about anything ethical or labelled and more just how humans are supposed to eat?
