How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

I think I'm what is known as a 'flexitarian'😃 ld say I eat meat maybe 3 meals a week. This could include processed meat 😕eg a shop bought frozen lasagne, bacon, sausages, pastie plus chicken. Once a fortnight I'll have beef, rarely lamb...I have mackerel, salmon, tuna and tinned sardines/pilchards 3/4 meals. I don't consciously think about the meals other than when I eat something like say salami...I feel 'dirty' afterwards.
If someone else was cooking and cost wasn't an issue I'd eat more salmon and fillet steak.

Never. Went veggie in 1992 and vegan 5 years ago. Wish I'd gone vegan sooner TBH.

Never needed to take any supplements, I eat a varied diet. Including vegan 'Mars Bars' and 'Bueno'. 🤣

And now I've got an air fryer, I'm finally able to cook decent tofu at home. A little vegan win! 😁

Cautionsharpblade · 20/03/2023 22:03

I don’t eat it, it’s so bad for the environment - today’s grim IPCC report reiterates this. It seems selfish to eat it when there are other options. I’m surprised people who have children/grandchildren aren’t more concerned about their future.

SunshineAndMonsteras · 20/03/2023 22:06

Someone on reddit calculated that it would take 70000 people to half their beef consumption and partially switch it to chicken to offset Taylor Swift's private jet for a year.

Never! Veggie 20 years and vegan 10.
I have a demanding job and work out high impact boxing, weights, running etc 4-5 times a week and am still full of energy! People ask how I have so much energy in fact as I am always on the go. Eat good real food, mostly plants.
I am fit and healthy and almost never ill.
I do take a multivitamin with b12, iron and vitamin d but I think that’s a good idea for almost all women in the uk.
Please don’t believe the tired, weak vegan nonsense. Many of the worlds top
sports people are vegan - Venus and Serena Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic, many weight and body builders.
Do they look tired?!
And if that’s not convinced you that you don’t need meat then look at the leading causes of death and how they are often related to processed and red meat diet. Don’t see wards filled with ‘tired vegans!’.

DataColour · 20/03/2023 22:33

Meat about twice a week, fish about twice a week, vegetarian or vegan the other times. Can't imagine eating meat every day. I always think these types of eaters can't be very adventurous.

reddwarfgeek · 20/03/2023 22:50

I've been a pescatarian for 8 years. I've been a veggie and a vegan within that time and felt amazingly healthy as a vegan (I conceived then actually!) but partner buys fish now and I do enjoy it. I try to cut down to one or two fish meals a week. I'll often have the vegan option in a restaurant to support it so they keep it on the menu!
If I was on my own I'd definitely be a full veggie. I don't miss meat at all unless I'm hungover 🤣 and can't see me eating it again.

Heartbreaktuna · 20/03/2023 22:56

Everyday, after being vegetarian for my entire childhood! I find this video helpful for anyone weighing up the environmental impact.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/03/2023 23:11

Always a bacon sandwich at the weekend, otherwise I can take or leave it. DP is more of a meat eater so we tend to have two or three meat dinners. He’s away with work this week and I will probably eat vegetarian meals until he gets back on Friday.

I do not understand if people eat a varied balanced diet there is no need for supplements

Of all those sports people how many of them manage veganism without the need of supplements?

Never.
I take vegan supplements and I feel fine.
does dead flesh increase your energy so much it's worth eating?

I've never had alive flesh to compare but yes. Absolutely worth it.

maddening · 20/03/2023 23:51

Been veggie for 28 years

The husband and ds are cutting meat down to once or twice a week and fish down to once or twice a.week with a couple of veggie days - but nothing to do with me as I am on a shake diet at the mo - but their cut down is.a health kick as opposed to veggie ideology- all about the balance I think.

Sceptre86 · 21/03/2023 00:10

I eat meat 3 days a week, fresh fish once a week and the other three days are vegetarian meals.

Oh get down off your high horse, so I can put it in a lasagne.

Rosesandstars · 21/03/2023 00:24

I eat meat once or twice a week. Like you, I think I feel more energetic after eating red meat.

I was veggie from 13 years old until my early 20s and had my first breakdown at 15. I know that it would have been multifactorial but I do wonder whether inadequate levels of B12 or something contributed to my illness.

ConcordeOoter · 21/03/2023 00:31

Every day, and on-and-off a carnivorous diet, and avoid bad processed foods.

I do agree on the energy. Red meat is a great boost, it's easy to understand how our ancestors found it so good.

2X4B523P · 21/03/2023 00:39

Fish very rarely and meat usually once or twice a day. Sometimes three times a day if I have an early cooked breakfast but when I do have one it’s usually a brunch.

2bazookas · 21/03/2023 00:51

We eat smaller portions of fish or meat than we used to; probably four times a week; and the other days are vegetarian. The other day on the radio someone said for good health one should aim to eat 35 different varieties of plant every week; I counted ours and an average week was 49.

If salmon and steak are too expensive, mince, cans of sardines or tuna, eggs, are cheaper. Or check the reduced fresh meat section in the smkt.

We are actually designed to eat meat.

Inject · 21/03/2023 01:04

I've observed the vegan, vegetarian women I know all had bad skin, dark eyes, dry skin and all had fertility issues. The meat eaters even the alcohol drinkers did not have fertility issues. 20's and 30's age group. Women I'm related to in India all vegetarian as per the religion / culture did not have fertility issues. So, on that basis I would not recommend anyone to give up meat or fish until they have finished having their family until scientists get to the bottom of why vegetarianism causes fertility issues in the western world. Maybe there is a study out there?! My doctor says that fresh food does not really have nutrients in it like it did in the past due to the way we pick and store - who knows. Anyway, I would not give up meat until you're an old woman.

TwoHedgehogs · 21/03/2023 01:07

Twice a day generally. I know a vegan and a vegetarian and they both have the same horrid pale colour to their complexion and dark circles around their eyes, they look quite ill. Meat should be part of a balanced diet, just don't hammer the red meat.

blebbleb · 21/03/2023 03:57

@WindsChange breathing is the leading cause of death. We're all going to die one day! Meat eaters or not.

FluffyMochi · 21/03/2023 04:32

I eat a lot of chicken and pork and eat it pretty much every day.

I really should up my red meat intake for iron reasons.

readingismycardio · 21/03/2023 04:35

At least once a day (including fish). I tend to avoid read meat, though, and only eat it 2-3 times a week.

FuzzyDonkey · 21/03/2023 04:45

Um....the maasai have an average life expectancy of 42-44 years old!
