How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

I eat meat at least once a day.

For example today I've just had a chicken salad wrap and this evening I'm making chilli con carne.

DustyLee123 · 20/03/2023 16:09

At least once a day.

KarmaStar · 20/03/2023 16:10

Never.
I take vegan supplements and I feel fine.
does dead flesh increase your energy so much it's worth eating?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 20/03/2023 16:10

3-4 days a week on average - sometimes more, sometimes less.

Mostly that involves tinned tuna, chicken and sausages as we can't really afford red meat.

Slimjimtobe · 20/03/2023 16:11

Twice a day (lunch and dinner)

Absolutely yes.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 20/03/2023 16:11

We aim for meat once or twice a week, and I try to do oily fish twice a week.

I started it for cost and environmental reasons, but now you’ve said this it’s got me thinking as we are often very run down and constantly knackered!

Laiste · 20/03/2023 16:12

DH sometimes eats a meat free meal by accident (beans on toast for eg) but in the main he likes to eat meat daily. He eats A LOT of food as he has a physically demanding job and is a big guy.

We don't eat a lot of fish.

I like meat but would be happy to cut it down to once/twice a week but i'm not going to fart about doing separate meals for me and DH and kids.

Madamecastafiore · 20/03/2023 16:12

Don't eat meat at all, eat fish maybe 4/5/6 times a week. Take spatone each day and green veg etc to keep iron levels up. I exercise every day and do t feel my energy levels are different from one day to the next.

It doesn't gross me out that meat is dead animal flesh, if that's what you were trying to do here.

So, the increase in energy is very valuable to me, yes.

Everyday. Cant ever see me not eating meat

101dalmatians · 20/03/2023 16:15

Red meat max once a week, although normally less. White meat or fish once or twice a week. Like you, we reduced intake for environmental reasons, and I feel much better for eating more pulses, vegetables etc. Even before this though, I’d never eat meat more than once a day - can’t really understand the mentality of needing it with every meal that some seem to have.

oldwhyno · 20/03/2023 16:15

almost every day.

wehavenotomatoes · 20/03/2023 16:16

Not in 20 or 25 years. I give blood and run marathons and stuff. You sound as though you don't really want to eat meat and would be happier with just fish - are you in a position to have a consultation with a dietitian to discuss how you can meet your individual goals? There's more than one way to meet your micro and macro nutrient requirements and maybe you're lacking in something- you don't have to eat meat to get it unless you want to though.

Lookingforwardtothesummer · 20/03/2023 16:16

Completely get this.

That's why originally I started eating basically no meat to begin with, because DP doesn't eat it and I like all food so didn't care!

But now have started incorporating it into what I eat separately and it does require more planning.

Oh just stop
We hardly eat any meat but eat a lot of fish @Lookingforwardtothesummer , I find exercising gives me more energy so make myself go, even if its raining

DominoRules · 20/03/2023 16:17

Everyday

Reluctantadult · 20/03/2023 16:18

I had a similar problem op, I went pretty much veggie, but then my stored iron dropped off a cliff to 5. I took tablets for a while but eat meat almost every day now. My husband and young kids don't do well with veggie meals, so that swung it really. I try to buy as good quality meat as I can.

TwistedSisters · 20/03/2023 16:19

Virtually every meal apart from breakfast, and even have it at breakfast a couple times a week.

mindutopia · 20/03/2023 16:19

Looking at what's planned for this week, meat for 2 dinners and fish for another, otherwise all vegetarian.

What it could be you are lacking is protein. What are you eating when you aren't eating meat? Is it sufficiently high in protein?

Lookingforwardtothesummer · 20/03/2023 16:22

We eat plenty of eggs, lentils, beans, nuts, cheese, so don't think I'm lacking protein?

OP posts:
chronictonic · 20/03/2023 16:22

Meat or fish one meal a day, about 5 days of the week.
We try to stick to good quality, and also masses of fresh seasonal vegetables and pulses.
I always prioritise unprocessed foods, and vitamins & nutrition from food sources rather than supplements.

5128gap · 20/03/2023 16:23

No meat or fish for two years. No eggs or dairy either for the last year. I'm the opposite to you, as since eating this way my energy, health and general wellbeing has soared. My digestion is much better, I get no bloating or headaches and shake off illness very quickly. I also think it helped greatly with menopause and I've lost two stone. Its partly to do with the fact that cutting out animal products has meant replacing them with loads of veg and other healthy choices, but the lack of meat has been very beneficial in its own right for me.

It's very annoying when ferritin drops and refuses to come up isn't it?!

We buy good quality meat too.

I probably eat meat/fish for one meal most days, then more meat at the weekend as tend to treat myself. So just considering lunch/dinner, I would say 40% my meals are veggie, 60% meat/fish. I have cut down and I'm happy with that balance. I would say I have a healthy, balanced diet.
