How often do you eat meat and fish?

I really reduced my meat consumption a few years ago, was having fish maybe twice a week. Meat just once or twice a year.

Over the last year however, I've started eating more meat as part of plan to try to raise ferritin which is always low.

I feel like I notice more energy the day after I've had red meat. I'd say I have it once a week now, more when I am eating out a lot as DP and I have had to travel quite a bit recently and ate out a lot then.

This weekend I had salmon on Saturday and steak on Sunday and I honestly feel like it's boosted my energy! They are very expensive though and we will have veggie meals now for the next few nights, but will probably eat out again as away later this week.

In general, trying to reduce consumption of meat for environmental reasons is a good thing I know, so I do feel a little guilty that now I'm adding more meat to my diet, it's like I'm going backwards Confused

How much meat do you eat regularly? Do you feel better including it in your diet?

Daily. Have a chest freezer and buy most on yellow sticker and freeze - coop, booths and Waitrose reduce heavily.

Never.
I take vegan supplements and I feel fine.
does dead flesh increase your energy so much it's worth eating?

I'd still eat meat if it decreased my energy x

cilllla · 20/03/2023 16:49

I eat fish once or twice a week, but would eat it more if I had a decent fishmonger nearby.

I eat meat every day, but only from a butcher. It comes from local farms so it hasn't travelled far. And I notice that the chicken thighs bones smell of nothing, rather than the faint but sickening smell the supermarket ones have. Grateful I can afford it, but we have a pretty low-cost lifestyle otherwise.

A PP mentioned venison – I would love to eat more of it! Delicious and so healthy.

I'll give up eating meat when the Bill Gates types give up their private jets, extreme over-consumption and lavish waterfront properties (not worried about sea levels, eh?) All that obscene, disgusting, destructive greed, and we're supposed to believe what they say. Haha.

I’m on a diet with a protein target of 120g a day so find lean meat and fish easy way to achieve this. I am fussy with meat quality.
Definitely try new things. Certain things like haddock are always reduced near me.

AIBUNoNo · 20/03/2023 16:52

Meat (red) approx once a week
Chicken once a week
Fish 2-3 times a week
Veggie 1-2 a week
Eggs usually daily for breakfast

Only meat contains ALL amino acids and the type of iron that we can absorb easily.

Vegetarian food does contain iron but it's not the same type.

I have IBS and many beans really upset my gut and I can only tolerate small amounts.

Out of interest, in terms of health, the total red meat 'allowance' is considered to be 60gms per person a day. I eat nothing like that - once a week at most.

Absolutely a nice juicer medium rare steak is heaven. And roast beef with all the trimmings yum yum 😋

Rattlethestars · 20/03/2023 16:58

Everyday. I have so many several intolerances that it's one of the foods that I can eat without issue.

crazyaboutcats · 20/03/2023 17:00

I eat meat, fish or seafood once per day at dinner

I try to keep breakfasts and lunches vegetarian

GCWorkNightmare · 20/03/2023 17:03

Haven’t eaten meat for over 30 years. I have a 150g per day protein target and can’t tolerate whey protein so eat lots of fish and eggs.

Squirrelblanket · 20/03/2023 17:03

Everyday. Not at every meal but it would be rare for us to eat vegetarian food at every meal on a single day. I just prefer meat and fish and I don't particularly care about the environmental factors.

SpongeBob2022 · 20/03/2023 17:03

I eat meat most days (not every day) but usually only for one meal per day.

I also eat relatively small portions of meat as I prefer carbs and veg....so my spaghetti bolognese is mostly spaghetti and I'd never have more than 2 sausages with my mash for example.

I tried cutting down on meat further and even though I was eating lentils etc. my iron levels dropped enough to need tablets. I only found out by accident but once I started taking the tablets I realised how low in energy I'd been. I think it's perfectly possible to be a very healthy veggie or vegan though...but it would take too much effort for me.

mackthepony · 20/03/2023 17:05

Daily.

Forever42 · 20/03/2023 17:06

2-3 times a week. I usually plan fish one night and meat two nights. Would rarely have either at lunchtime. Can't say I've noticed any difference to energy levels when I do eat it.

Redebs · 20/03/2023 17:16

I occasionally eat fish, but haven't had meat for a few years. Even before giving it up, I ate it rarely. I don't like the way animals are treated for meat, so have decided not to support the industry.

Sometimes I get a meat craving, but tuna takes care of that.

Sarah2891 · 20/03/2023 17:18

Never. Haven't eaten it for about 28 years!

blebbleb · 20/03/2023 17:21

I eat dead flesh nearly every day.

WellTidy · 20/03/2023 17:25

One or the other at least once a day, usually twice.

ehb102 · 20/03/2023 17:28

Twice a day.

I do however avoid certain processed meats. The bowel cancer studies all pointed to things like industrially produced bacon being a huge risk factors. I also avoid mechanically recovered meat.

I like game when I can get it and pigeon, goose and venison too. Now that's locally produced and locally harvested, very good value (people will give it away for almost nothing, sometimes free). You're eating pests that need controlling so we can grow the rest of our food. Check out the "Giving up the game" group on Facebook.

JustDanceAddict · 20/03/2023 17:30

Meat 1-2 x a week (only poultry
fish 2/3 x - one salmon/one white plus occasionally tinned tuna.

FelicityFlops · 20/03/2023 17:33

Fish about twice a week. I don't like meat all that much and live on my own, so a lot less.

lljkk · 20/03/2023 17:42

Most days. I had good energy but used to fail blood donation tests, before I had regular heme iron in my diet.

TenTwentyAtCheltenhamSandwich · 20/03/2023 17:45

I eat meat daily, I crave red meat & feel better for it. You could try eating smaller pieces of salmon & meat OP, rather than going without.

user1748339345 · 20/03/2023 17:48

Once or twice a week at the most but quite small portions. Not bothered about fish. Trying to cut down on meat but I get insane cravings for meat before my period!

Lcb123 · 20/03/2023 17:49

Read Tim Spector book, makes you realise meat isn’t that evil compared to other foods. British venison is very good for you and the environment, they sell in Waitrose.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 20/03/2023 17:49

I rarely eat fish, not that keen on it.

On average I probably eat meat 3-4 times a month.
