Preferred pronoun labels at childrens event

StopitSarah · 19/03/2023 20:21

I took my primary age children to a science event this weekend. It’s run by university students. Almost all of them had their preferred pronouns on their name labels.

AIBU to feel that was unnecessary and to feel a bit uneasy? One of my children wanted to know why “the man is saying we should say he/him. Isn’t that obvious?”

I asked one of the students who said it was to show support to any trans helpers and was for the benefit of the (adult) students, not the children.

I’m SO BORED and irritated by the trans agenda being every-bloody-where.

But AIBU? I had a good chat with one of the students and he said that they’re all science students and understand that woman = biological female is too simplistic. My brain exploded.

In many languages, including older forms of Welsh and Irish, the word for "green" and "blue" was often the same.

As a shameless excuse to be slightly puerile, in Kazakh, blue & green are not differentiated, their word is kok.

Really? Which science was he studying? Alchemy? Astrology? Homeopathy?

Redebs · 20/03/2023 04:54

But Woman does mean biological female.

That's the word for it.

discobrain · 20/03/2023 04:56

Hahahaha

There's godawful things happening, and THIS is what you're worried about?

Ohgod we as humans are entirely fucked.

Some of the godawful things happening are the damage done to women and girls by men in dresses

Whenharrymetsmelly · 20/03/2023 05:09

Interesting you went to a science event, hundreds of years ago you would have been the weird one believing in science and not the bible. Something to ponder 🤔

garlictwist · 20/03/2023 05:24

Welcome to the world of students. I work at a university and they all do it. For them, announcing their pronouns is as normal and logical as sharing their name.

Because of malaria, shall we ignore sepsis? It's possible to be concerned about more than one thing at a time, including the pernicious, coercive drip, drip, drip of gender bullying.

I'd be honest and tell my kids that some people are unwell and get confused about whether they're he or she, and it's probably best to humour them otherwise you might get told off, even though it's clearly ridiculous.

That seems like an eminently sensible approach.

WeeWillyWinkie9 · 20/03/2023 05:27

Vanderlayinfustries · 20/03/2023 00:35

By care less I mean it's no big deal not that I'm rude about it! It's just normal.to bem someone living their life their way

It is widely considered rude to use 3rd person pronouns when someone is there.

Did your mum never mention the cat's mother to you to teach you manners?

Faultymain5 · 20/03/2023 06:00

Vanderlayinfustries · 20/03/2023 00:34

Better never let your child learn a European language because many of them add make and female pronoun rules to everything and it might just blow your bigoted mind;

It wouldn't bother me. My youngest is in primary and has a friend who identifies as they. I couldn't care less it's their choice and their life.

This doesn’t make sense to me.

surely whilst learning European male and female pronouns for objects and people make things that don’t follow the rules (like an obvious male being referred to as ‘Elle’ in french) just confusing? Or the rule that if there is one male in a group of females the pronoun changes to ils, but if said male identifies as a she then that group becomes elles again. 🤯

I mean accept whatever there is a trans boy at my daughter’s school. I only question why they still attend given it’s an all girls school. Except now it’s not if we say we believe in this.

HandScreen · 20/03/2023 06:16

Chenford · 19/03/2023 20:31

no need to make a big deal of it, no need to out yourself as intolerant.

But it’s ok to be intolerant towards those who are gender critical?

I mean, yes. We should definitely be intolerant to bigotry.

SinnerBoy · 20/03/2023 06:26

HandScreen · Today 06:16

I agree, we shouldn't tolerate the shrieking Trans Extremist Zealots and their threats of assault, rape and murder. They show the very worst, vile, hate filled prejudice to women and girls.

Busybutbored · 20/03/2023 06:26

StopitSarah · 19/03/2023 20:26

Where are the equal opportunities for people who are gender critical?

How can you be critical of something you don't understand? Don't get me wrong, I find it all a bit weird but it doesn't actually affect me so I don't care what someone else chooses to call themselves

SinnerBoy · 20/03/2023 06:28

How can you be critical of something you don't understand?

Well, I don't understand the number of angels which can dance on a pin, but that doesn't mean that I can't be critical of those who believe it's true.

Weird analogy given you've never met an angel

icanneverthinkofnc · 20/03/2023 06:32

They obviously aren't scientists..

DaisyBoop · 20/03/2023 06:38

XX chromosomes= Woman
XY chromosomes = Man

A person with XY chromosomes can put on as many dresses as they want but they’re still a man.

Transwomen are not women and we are going down a dangerous path trying to twist reality.

I think the OP is spot on and it’s ridiculous having pronouns at a kids event just to pander to a minority. In fact, I think it’s ridiculous to have them at all.

BoredBetsy · 20/03/2023 06:43

Sarahcoggles · 19/03/2023 20:50

Offering vulnerable teens a “grass is greener” option by persuading them that they’re in the wrong body is so so harmful. I don’t understand why it’s being allowed. It’s abuse on a massive scale, and one day it’ll be acknowledged.

This is what I don't understand. You're telling some kids "yes you're right. There is something so fundamentally wrong with you that you must have been born in the wrong body. No normal boy would like a skirt or sparkly things. Let's start denying everything true about you and make sure everyone knows that we can't accept you as you are just because of the things you like"

Chenford · 20/03/2023 06:58

@HandScreen

🙄🙄🙄

Yes. It's absolutely the behaviour of the GCs that is bigoted. Not the TRAs with their screeches of 'no debate' and threats of physical violence.

The irony would be funny it it weren't so depressing.

sashh · 20/03/2023 06:59

So they actively discriminated against GC women, who's beliefs have been tested in court , in order to what?

I'd complain to the uni.

I'd tell your children some adults pretend to be men / women just like you might pretend to be a dog or a dinosaur.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 20/03/2023 06:59

I will never use they/them its completely grammatically wrong. If a person wants to be non-binary then surely their pronoun should be ‘it’!?

SinnerBoy · 20/03/2023 06:59

Busybutbored · Today 06:30

Weird analogy given you've never met an angel

And you've never met a man who's turned into a woman.

dimorphism · 20/03/2023 07:07

Ha! I should have known there were languages where green and blue are the same.

The point is, encouraging people in the belief they can compel other people's language against all the rules of English grammar and common English usage is not likely to be good for their mental health. Because you can't. Encouraging people in the belief that coercive control is a reasonable way to treat other human beings is also not going to result in happiness.

It's not going to improve mental health - where else do mental health professionals encourage delusions: they don't tell anorexics to go on a diet.

In my experience if someone demands different pronouns it's actually easier to just use their name, and that's what I do. However, if we did get to the point where pronouns were individualised, mine would be 'High Empress' because if we're going to totally abandon all grammar rules, why not?

The students doing this are well-meaning, but they don't realise that trans-ideology as it's being rolled out is harmful to women and children and is homophobic. Because this is not advertised, and 'be-kind' is. If you are a woman, chances are you will be directly affected sooner or later. Many women, children and lesbians are being badly affected by the ideology right now - you may not have noticed, but others have and they care precisely because they do understand what's going on.
