To be so drained and fed up of constant electronic forms and passwords and apps?

Hate it so much I can't express it. Nothing works right for me, you need a fairly recent smartphone for apps to work for example.

Then with electronic forms. Fuck me. I'm trying to fill in a whole complicated form for an appointment and cannot get the 'electronically fillable' form to work. So now I have to print it, and hope the printer works, and then take a photo and scan or something.

I don't have the energy to do this now. It is now a whole multi step process with lots of little bits to get the task done.

I just fucking hate it all when it comes to appointments and job applications and whatnot, and then everything needing an app, or an account with a password that needs xyz to meet criteria.

God needed to get that off my chest.

Sounds like a pain and good illustration of why we hate not having phone numbers. Next time Google ypur nearest M&S and phone the store.

Honestly, I wish I'd done this. Its really put me off online shopping with them.

Also, my dentist has gotten in on the AI act now. Every six months I visit them, and every six months they send me a reminder text of my upcoming appointment. So far, so reasonable, but before my last two visits, I've had to submit three different forms, one on Covid, one about my family health history and one with my personal details before they will confirm my booking. Every time I visit I have to redo these forms. I've been their patient for six years.

Don't get me started on the auto-correct on the Mumsnet app. (WHY does it spin to the end of your message every time you make an edit? Maddening)

why would you expect them to be different? luckily you can speak to 2 humans about your concerns in the surgery and have them examine you 👍🏽

yanbu
special place in hell is reserved for the developer of my work's hr app.
it's awful.

Don't blame us poor programmers, we are very often following a design spec that's been thrown at us.

I can't tell you the number of times I've looked at a spec and thought "that is a pile of shit and can be done so much better".

But just like Boris said he was "following the science", we have to "follow the spec".

Greenfairydust · 18/03/2023 08:21

Completely agree.

Technology is supposed to make life easier but in so many cases it only added stress and inconvenience.

Companies have also let their customer service slide into oblivion and now expect customers to do all the work online or via apps.

What gets me is that half the time entering the right password/login is not even enough, half the time you need to be send a ''verification code'' and on and on it goes.

This week again I randomly can't sign back into Facebook (which I hate anyway and only use to follow local news boards) with the right credential because they want to send me a ''verification code''. Fair enough, but the code never reach my phone although they have the correct number. I am just going to stop using Facebook as this regularly happens.

Same thing with Apple. Often when I tried to access my iCloud emails on my phone, a verification message needs to be sent to my laptop. Which I don't have with me and is the bloody reason why I want to look at my emails on my phone instead in the first place...

Also I think all this push to have everything kept and accessed online has been to the benefit of fraudsters because the security measures that companies take are not always adequate and it is all too easy for these databases to be hacked.

I probably sound like a dinosaur, but I wouldn’t trust those master password apps personally. Do you even know the ridiculously long password it has generated for you? If not then surely if the app goes down you’re done for!

I use the Apple keychain one and don't always use the generated password, the actual application is in iCloud so hopefully should be retrievable, you can only really use it successfully if you use Safari and all Apple devices though. I use my own simpler passwords for things where I need to input separate digits or enter on the TV and it stores them also

Greenfairydust · 18/03/2023 08:28

''@SalmonKnicks

This thread shows people’s age''

And your comment shows a nice little slice of ageism and ignorance.

Age is not necessarily the factor.

And even if it was, society and technology need to be accessible and beneficial to all. Not exclude a large part of the population simply based on age, disability and so on.

At the moment in many aspects technology seems to benefit companies who want to cut costs and reduce customer service rather than the consumer.

afterdropshock · 18/03/2023 08:28

Also, all tickets sent as pdf to email means I am running out of storage. I'd prefer paper tickets.

WeRateSquirrels · 18/03/2023 08:28

AceofPentacles · 18/03/2023 07:16

Yy to government fecking gateway. If you lose the password to that you are literally fucked.

Also two factor authentication- I've put in my username and password, why do I then need to open an app and get a secret code? FUCK OFF

Because TFA is an easy and powerful way to protect yourself from brute force/dictionary attacks. Especially as it seems a lot of people are using the same password for everything, which is just asking for trouble.

But what do I know - I like parking apps 🤷‍♀️

And also, I just don't WANT a parking app on my phone to pay for town centre parking.

I just want to go and shove a few coins in the machine.

Parking apps😣

Such fun in the middle of the Peak District with no signal. Dh and l nearly divorced over this😭

moveoverye · 18/03/2023 08:42

YANBU!
They’ve got us over a barrel.
We’re now totally dependent on tech and keep having to buy newer phones with bigger capacities (I am paying 79p to Apple per month for icloud. Whyyyy should I have to?! grrrrr) and share more and more of our personal information to access anything. If you rebel, your life is made fucking inconvenient. I opt out of personalised adverts, so they bombard me with fucking disgusting adverts of earwax and tonsil stones. I mean what the fuck! But they know full well that I have no options left because I need my sodding iphone just to function in the world.

As for self checkout, self admin, customer service etc, society has totally flipped, pleasing the customer and improving their lives have gone out of the window. Customers no longer hold the power. Corporations hold the powers and systems are designed for THEIR benefit and profits, not ours.

Sometimes I really want to scream “fuck you” to it all and go off grid.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 18/03/2023 08:49

Last week post arrived from them. A letter explaining they were going paperless and from now on I needed to use their app….Arrrragghhh indeed

Halifax did the same but at least they gave an opt out to still receive paper statements. Which I promptly took.

I really don't understand your comment: why would I expect my dentist to be different? Different to what? This is a new system my dentist has put in place that asks me to repeatedly fill in the same background patient information in online forms before I can confirm my appt.

What 2 humans are you talking about? Thats oddly specific. There's one receptionist, a dentist and dental assistant.

Funny enough, my family's historical health woes don't change every 6 mths and neither does it come up when I get my teeth cleaned.

Are you...a bot?

BeachBlondey · 18/03/2023 08:56

I agree with you Op. It does my head in. I wanted to open an account with Barclays. You would not believe the shit I had to go through on line. Uploading my passport and ID before I went in to the branch. Then taking a selfie, tilting my head this way and that, so it would link up with my passport - face recognition. Such a faff - and they were going to see me in person anyway!!

Don't even get me started on companies who have no way of speaking to a human being! I needed to swap a Wowcher. Fuck me. No customer service at all! Everything has to be done on Whatsapp, but you go round in a loop for DAYS, it's SO time consuming. I think in the end I was in the loop for 10 days and then someone finally replied to me on twitter. In the 80's, it would have been a 5 minute phone call with an actual person.

My Dad cant do internet or tech any more, as he's 81, so I have to do all of is stuff as well EXHAUSTING!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 18/03/2023 08:58

Talking to useless chatbots is my latest bugbear

While in exjob I had to use a chatbot while trying to get through to a supplier. Absolutely useless for my query with the 'I did not understand that' 'do you mean x?' 'I think you said y, please confirm' so I ended up with good old email to a contact. Would I like to leave feedback? you BET I would. The words useless frustrating and consuming were used - wouldn't accept swearwords, unluckily.

The HMRC one has had me swearing at the phone. Do they actively recruit for women with the most irritating patronising voices?

RaspberriesToYouToo · 18/03/2023 08:58

Yep. I don’t understand why there is so much pressure to do everything via computers when old technology can do it far more efficiently, without so much environmentally-unfriendly power use, and far more easily.

Except that someone is making money by forcing the stuff through.

This is exactly what happened last time private companies were given carte blanche, exactly what will happen whenever private monied interests are allowed to do what they want with no regard for the interests of people or their environments. It’s why humans invented different people-led forms of government, and checks and balances in political thought. But Britain always despises intelligence and prefers inherited money.

lipstickwoman · 18/03/2023 09:05

I've recently needed ID. I've been obliged to renew my passport as I have nothing else.. and as bank statements, utility bills, everything is now online providing anything to confirm I am who I say I am is becoming harder.

RaspberriesToYouToo · 18/03/2023 09:06

Not half as many ID and privacy issues with older technology either.

Maybebabyno2 · 18/03/2023 09:09

I had an electric car for a week, obviously didn't have a charge point at home as was just on loan from the garage.

Every different charge point requires a different fucking app. I can't just insert my card then it charge what I take, oh nooo, gotta load up a fiver onto a random app and hope for the best. Half the points then didn't show up on their own app with no way to get assistance. I was frustrated to the point of tears in tesco carpark.

I actually hated the bloody thing but the apps made it so much worse!

AudHvamm · 18/03/2023 09:09

God yes! I used to be an early adopter and generally tech keen, then in the 2010s opted out of smartphones as I felt the downsides outweighed the benefits. Anyway it got to the point where that was really no longer viable and I have noticed a clear decline in my concentration & wellbeing in recent years as I outsource more and more cognitive function & social connection to my phone.

I read something recently about the unwitting bargains we make with tech that struck a chord, I do feel we're sleepwalking as a society and not considering the value of that which we lose (the advantages of why we peruse these techs are clear and publicly discussed). I think what troubles me is that we are somehow abandoning our materiality (as in our physical exisstance).

Might have been John Naughton (Has a column in the guardian/observer) on chatGTP. He's really worth reading

I like to imagine that whoever designed Government Gateway has long since fled the country under a cloak of anonymity to live in a monastery atop a mountain in order to atone for their sins for the rest of their life.

Oh God, I hope they're having a horrible time. That thing, to register, is a nightmare. As is the public NHS one. 😡😡

The only solution I've found with passcodes is to write them all in a note book, and make sure I always put it back in the safe as soon as I've used it. Not much use when you're out though.

I'm sure it was easier years ago...🙄

Why do you pepper every app with fake "matey" phrases? Lots of "Heys" and exclamation marks, yeps and nopes. "Hmmm. We seem to have a problem Houston!"

It's very annoying especially when the app is wasting our time by not doing what is is meant to do.

Are all programmers teenage boys who haven't progressed?

This made me giggle. The hours I've spent trying to get into various accounts for myself/clients.

then why don't you say something? that's bad project management if that's not facilitated.

fwiw I work in an IT project and the inability of the developers/programmers to communicate is frustrating. it's like talking to 13 year olds who are in a strop because I asked them to unload the dishwasher.

I really think that the group of people who become developers are often (not always!) introvert and inasseritve and can't think outside their boxes. I really think that that is the reason many applications are so shit.
