It's a bit of a pisser, but I would imagine anyone who is sensible, and has more than an ounce of common sense, would NOT have booked any holiday abroad before sending for (and receiving) a new passport - if their old one expires before they go abroad (or does not have enough months left on it.) Anyone who has booked for this summer - May to August for example - who has not sent for their passport yet is incredibly imprudent.
We all know now that you MUST have 3 months on your passport to travel to Europe, and 6 months outside Europe, so anyone whose passport ran out/runs out in 2023, would be incredibly silly and irresponsible to not have sent for their new passport in late 2022/very early 2023 (like before the end of January,) if they're going abroad this year.
DD's 10 year passport ran out at the end of February 2023, and she wanted to go on holiday to Iceland and Lapland in November 2022. She sent for a new passport in July 2022 - 7 months before her passport ran out, and 4 months before she was due to go. Got it after 4 weeks. (Then she booked the holiday.) Yeah she 'lost' 7 months on it, but when you have to have 3-6 months left on it to travel anywhere abroad, it's pretty much a given that you will lose roughly 3-6 months on your passport, if you want to go away within 6 months of its end date.
Lose 7 months off a 10 year passport, or risk losing your holiday? I know which one I would prefer!
