I support them.

Just thought I'd let people know to get their applications in ASAP.

The main purpose of the strike is to negotiate a better pay deal which is currently at 2%. The Union say public sector staff are using food banks and claiming some of the benefits they are administering. I support them too. Don't get angry at people who are being treated unfairly and struggling to make ends meet.

Lovelyveg82 · 17/03/2023 14:10

They aren’t be “paid”

Do you understand what “pay” is? From the employer

They will receive some funds from the union subs they have paid in

I'm sorry, I misread your original post.

You are right that in certain circumstances strikers can access strike fund payments.

OP posts:
Lovelyveg82 · 17/03/2023 14:13

So pp was correct in assertion that they are not paid whilst striking

which you said they would be

carriedout · 17/03/2023 14:14

Workyworky · 17/03/2023 14:08

@carriedout basic fact: incorrect.

No it is not. They will receive no wages.

It is the fucking law.

Why do people persist in making things up?

Any strike fund payments come from subs - like using your savings.

davegrohll · 17/03/2023 14:15

How long will they strike for does anybody know ? I can't afford to do our new passports until the beginning of may !

As I said, I misread the original post.

Striking workers, in certain circumstances can get financial support from their union via the strike fund. In thud case, I imagine they will be.

Hanging on for those “figures” OP that actually provide some facts rather than just what the workers are saying

davegrohll · 17/03/2023 14:17

Oh they're striking FOR 5 weeks???
Okay - in that case, when do they start ??

Beginning of spring I reckon… so they can catch some rays, use their passports for a holiday and get the garden sorted

WhereIsMyRefund · 17/03/2023 14:18

I imagine varying staff will be on strike over a five week period. Surely no individual staff member can afford to lose that much pay for five continuous weeks? I would be very stressed to lose so much, however much I believed in the cause.

Is that at me?

I never said they'd get paid. I misread something and corrected it wrongly.

It's depressing how many supposedly intelligent women on here don't understand how strikes and unions work.

Maybebabyno2 · 17/03/2023 14:20

Workyworky · 17/03/2023 13:15

That's the point. Strike action causes disruption.

Yeah but mostly to themselves. They will be the ones working through the back log. I don't see how striking is a good idea in a heavy admin based role. Seems like it's just going to make their own lives harder.

Most won't strike each day.

The union will have a limited strike fund.

But anyway, it is their own money and can spend it as they wish.

You'll be hanging on a long time. I'm not at work and have no intention of doing work related stuff right now. I suggest you go and Google them yourself. I'm sure you can do that.

The rest of the time they'll do action short of a strike or work to rule.

You can only do what you can do in a day.

Once there's a massive backlog, it'll stay in place.

WimbyAce · 17/03/2023 14:21

Just seen this, need to get one for my little one l!

Are you Jacob Reese-Mogg?

OP posts:
Yuja · 17/03/2023 14:24

I support the right to strike for any public sector workers. However, selfishly I sent mine off last week for DD as we are supposed to be going away the end of May, so I'm really hoping it'll get processed before the strike. Her old passport arrived with them on Monday. argh.

Lovelyveg82 · 17/03/2023 14:24

So you literally have no figures? Even approximates? To give some meat to the bones of your OP. Your happy to spout what the unions say but tell us all to go and do our own research re the actual facts

says it all really!

TinaYouFatLard · 17/03/2023 14:25

Please do not rush to renew if you don’t actually need to. This is stupid advice. As Simon Calder said this morning, the panic this will trigger will cause a huge problem at the passport office. People rushing to renew will mean people who actually need passports won’t be able to get them.

Check the requirements for your destination.

Lovelyveg82 · 17/03/2023 14:25

Workyworky · 17/03/2023 14:23

For finding it a contradiction that you won’t share the figures your refer to because you’re at work and yet…. Start a thread and multiple updates seem to be perfectly acceptable! 😊

Unfortunately OP, a lot people agree with Jacob Reese-Mogg despite him being an absolute sweaty bollock.

I agree with him too. Do get yourself back to work 🤣
