In peads A&E with daughter as went over on ankle and it swelled up like a balloon. Been hear 1 hr 30 mins. Paeds A&E not busy - maybe 3-4 patients. Staff everywhere - must be about 10 people milling around tbe computers doing very little. No wheel chair so have been carrying her round the hospital to X-ray , toilet etc.

Just seem to be on a go slow. If I were this slow at my job, i would be in trouble. 🤷‍♀️

Expect to get flames for this of course. We were sat outside X-ray for 10 mins and when they came out, they didn't realise we had been sitting there. I have a hungry grumpy in pain 6yr old.

My daughter broke her arm a few weeks ago and I was amazed and delighted she was triaged, x rayed and treated in about two hours. It felt amazingly fast! We were all prepared for a six or more hour wait so we were delighted.

You really almost want to be thankful you’re not seen super fast in A&E to be honest. Because if you are it generally means it’s really serious.

BakedTattie · 16/03/2023 20:38

Are you actually insane?!

Why can't we critique the NhS? Why can it not just be that they are super inefficient and not trying that hard.

No issue giving bad hote and restaurants review when the service is bad. Same thing applies here

A hospital isn't comparable to Bella Italia is it?

lipstickwoman · 16/03/2023 20:39

Well let's hope all the doctors aren't on a ward dealing with an emergency, a distressed family or more. A and E don't have their own doctors.

There is a bigger picture. You're not all of it

FUSoftPlay · 16/03/2023 20:39

I understand your POV OP. I’ve been in hospital several times over the last few years (rotten luck) and have seen some departments rushed off their feet whilst others twiddle their thumbs.

MissingMoominMamma · 16/03/2023 20:39

I love our NHS. Our family wouldn’t have survived without it.

However, I had an unexpected night in hospital last week. I was frightened and really unwell. I was treated fairly quickly, but I wasn’t communicated with, or treated with any warmth whatsoever until one of the non- nurses (used to be auxiliaries?) came along and checked on me- 8 hours later. She was lovely.

I felt completely dehumanised up until that point tbh 😕.

youshouldnthaveasked · 16/03/2023 20:39

Do you know the job roles of each of the staff members you can see? There is likely a queue of patients waiting to see the doctor. 90 minutes is not that long really.

hope your daughter is ok

batsandeggs · 16/03/2023 20:39

God, I have such admiration for anyone working for the NHS having to deal with such pains in the arses.

bunintheoven88 · 16/03/2023 20:39

@AvAviMav 🤣

Our nearest major hospital. Orthopaedic outpatients. 6 receptionists all sat there gossiping . Stood there like lemon for god knows how long before one of them actually noticed.
Same hospital, ultrasound dept. Presented at the desk. Told to go to the other desk 20 yards down the corridor. Receptionist with a face like a smacked arse finally looked up, asked my name and told me to go and sit in the chairs opposite the first desk. 15 minutes after my appointment was due ( nobody else waiting) a nurse came out, called my name and apologised, nobody knew where I was.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 16/03/2023 20:41

I am absolutely sick of it. My daughter has been to A&E before and not seen in over 3 hours...no GP appointments unless you call right at 8:30am...other occasion 2 days (10 hours total on hold) to get through to 111. It's a terrible estate of affairs...if this was a business it would have no customers...I honestly would rather pay less taxes and find my own via insurance...

She probably had a face like that because the person before you said something abusive to her. Or maybe she's had 20 abusive patients today. Receptionists in the NHS get treated like absolute shit. I'm surprised most of them still do their jobs.

scaryeleneve · 16/03/2023 20:42

The OP is so obviously a wind up merchant. Either that or thick as pig shit.

br0kenankle · 16/03/2023 20:43

Not w wind up

Whilst the NHS has its challenges, my latest experience with it has been brilliant. The nurses and other staff caring for my daughter have been fantastic and I can't thank them enough. I've seen first hand how many patients they have to look after while on a shift and I personally take my hat off to them.

I'm sorry your daughter is in pain, it's never nice seeing your children suffer. A 2 hour wait though isn't that bad if I am honest. When I was last in A&E, it was 6 hours before discharge.

br0kenankle · 16/03/2023 20:43

You have to walk past our bay to get to X-ray as well. No patients have gone that way.

OP posts:
bubbles2023 · 16/03/2023 20:44

Do you mean a doctor hasn't seen the outcome of the X-ray yet? They can only do what they can and your dc injury isn't life threatening. I'd be happy with the 2 hours you've spent there.

Yes the nhs is struggling but stop/ encourage everyone to stop voting tories.

scaryeleneve · 16/03/2023 20:44

I'm regularly looking like I'm 'milling about' in ED. I'm an AHP and can help with nothing in ED except for the very specific job I'm trained to do and requested to do by the team down there. Very sorry if that clutters up ED and makes patients thinks we're all doing nothing but wasting their time.

OP - you are the worst of the British public in regard to the view of the NHS. Please come and train to work in the NHS as you clearly think it's a easy relaxed affair that anyone could do.

It’s different to critiquing a restaurant because you haven’t got a clue how much goes on behind the scenes. There’s no way the staff are stood round chatting doing sweet FA in A&E. Absolutely no chance. YABVVVU.

difficultlemons · 16/03/2023 20:45

I think you are maybe misunderstanding or have not had it explained to you correctly.
When an X-ray is taken it doesn't need to be sent to the doctor it is immediately available on the system. It needs a radiologist or/and a doctor to look at it and those people sometimes want second opinions - this takes time as they are specialists- not just hanging around chatting with mates at the desk

BitchBrigade · 16/03/2023 20:45

Radiology staff will be doing other things for other patients, as will the other staff in Paeds. They aren't there to be at your beck and call regardless of how "not busy" it seems where you are.

You won't get any faster a pace on wards/in theatres and at appointments by going private either by the way. In fact appointment slots are longer per patient. You might get in the hospital quicker or referred for tests quicker but there is still a wait when you are there and the Consultants are exactly the same ones you would see at your NHS hospital 🙃

scaryeleneve · 16/03/2023 20:46

br0kenankle · 16/03/2023 20:36

It's been 40 mins since her X-ray. It still hasn't been sent to the doctor. I can't emphasise how not busy this a&e is.

No doctor is sitting and waiting at the computer eagerly refreshing PACS to see if a broken limb image has come through yet ffs.

Shewhois21 · 16/03/2023 20:46

Have you not considered that 40-50% of the hospital doctors are on strike today OP? Surely that's crossed your mind Confused

Notbeinfunnehbut · 16/03/2023 20:46

i think the OP is getting a pasting here

some NHS staff very efficient some aren’t
i went near Xmas coughing up blood and with a serious temperature, left for 6 hrs did a blood test didn’t look inside my throat once! , to the point where I actually said
is somebody going to examine my throat…apparently it wasn’t necessary

2 weeks later turns out it was necessary, Septic tonsillitis 😡

theres good and bad in every industry
