NHS - this is why people don't care

In peads A&E with daughter as went over on ankle and it swelled up like a balloon. Been hear 1 hr 30 mins. Paeds A&E not busy - maybe 3-4 patients. Staff everywhere - must be about 10 people milling around tbe computers doing very little. No wheel chair so have been carrying her round the hospital to X-ray , toilet etc.

Just seem to be on a go slow. If I were this slow at my job, i would be in trouble. 🤷‍♀️

Expect to get flames for this of course. We were sat outside X-ray for 10 mins and when they came out, they didn't realise we had been sitting there. I have a hungry grumpy in pain 6yr old.

2 hours is not good when there is hardly anyone here

🤦🏻‍♀️

Well I just want to say to all the NHS staff reading this thread that I appreciate all that you do, I've seen the hard work first hand on the acute wards and I have nothing but praise for them all.

daydreamsaplenty · 16/03/2023 20:59

I'm sorry and I mean this in the nicest way possible but YABU.
I appreciate you are stressed and your daughter is in pain but the Doctors are probably busy. It's now on the night shift and there is normally only one team of doctors on a night shift ( one SHO, 2 Registrars and one consultant at home on call). Those doctors have to cover the whole hospital so that's A&E, paediatric wards and possibly the NICU. If there is a critical paediatric patient then they are probably in resus/majors dealing with that.
In regards to the X-ray, they need to be checked over by a radiographer. There will probably be 2 on the night shift covering imaging for the entire hospital. X-rays are reviewed on a priority basis meaning that a chest X-ray for a patient with breathing difficulties on the geriatric ward will take priority over your daughter's suspected broken ankle as she is currently stable and it's not life threatening.
I appreciate it is frustrating but sometimes you need to take in the bigger picture of the whole hospital, not just the department you are currently in.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 16/03/2023 20:59

So you've been in paeds A&E for 90 minutes, she's already been triaged and x-rayed. What more are you expecting?

Staff on computers will be updating notes, chasing up test results amongst the million and one other things that they have to do.

You have no idea if there are other families quietly sitting behind curtains, in small side bays/rooms off the ward, off the ward at other departments ie xray, MRI, CAT scans etc, still under the care of pads A&E who may be awaiting their return.

You are being massively unfair.

I get the doctors, it’s actually very obvious they are flat out. What about the group of PAEDS nurses, stood by the desk chatting? Why did no one take DD’s blood but we had to wait for the student doctor? It’s specifically the nurses I see stood around, not the doctors, and not the HCAs, they are on the go constantly. Why don’t the nurses jump in and do some of the dross for the docs or HCAs? What is their role on Paeds A and E?

Speaking as a Phlebotomist working in an NHS hospital:

It's no longer compulsory for nurses working within our trust to train to take bloods, therefore many of them simply don't have the skill of venepuncture and would not be able to collect the sample.

It’s bad enough that a junior doctor is known as such. They are not ‘students’ . They have completed 6 years of training much of it practical and now are qualified professionals with skills such as taking blood from young children.
It’s not a task that just any health care professional can do .

What do you expect admin & support staff to do about your daughter's ankle?

We were sat outside X-ray for 10 mins
Are you having a fucking laugh?
Do you think you should be getting 5 star service?

gettingoldisshit · 16/03/2023 21:02

You are very entitled op! Paediatric doctors cover A&E, NICU, childrens wards and labour/birth centre. Your child is not seriously unwell so therefore not a priority!

TrishTrix · 16/03/2023 21:02

XRs appear automatically on the PACs system. If it isn't going through there is nothing staff can do but wait for the IT system to sort itself out

YRs need to be looked at by a doctor or a nurse practitioner. There may not be one in the dept at the moment - the people you see likely have other job roles.

As others have said it's unlikely resus is in your mini paeds bay. So there may well be a whole pile of drama you can't see happening.

When I did paeds ED I will never forget the shitty awful shift where a child came in incredibly sick and we all worked really hard to try to save them for about 90 minutes but they died. All three of us doctors then went outside to have a moment of fresh air and to regroup before we went back to tackle the massive number of kids who had built up in the main waiting room during this time.

Some horrible dad came over while we were doing this (the senior doctor on shift was actually crying when he approached us) and yelled at us all for being lazy cunts.

it was almost 20 yrs ago and I still remember the child who died and that awful father. When we did finally see his child they had something incredibly minor that could have been managed at home without ever seeing a HCP.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 16/03/2023 21:02

The nhs is like any work place their are amazing hard working staff members and incredibly lazy and rude ones. I think the reason the nhs get such a hard time from the general public is because its plastered all over the news and social media that nurses don't have time to pee, eat, drink or have breaks ect, which anyone who has ever spent anytime in hospital can see this is completely untrue.

Phlebotomists are utterly brilliant by the way! Xx

Why don't you give your daughter some attention instead of eye balling staff and posting on a forum. Christ.

The X-ray dept was empty. The X-ray takes 10 mins max. Why does it take 90 mins? Why do we see the staff stood yapping for that time? We understand waiting for the one junior doctor, what we don’t understand are all the nurses stood chatting socially while people wait. If everyone is waiting for the doctors maybeless nurses and more doctors? The nurses aren’t ‘nursing’. The waiting list of folders sits there, a nurse picks it up, looks at it, puts it back. No communication and you darent ask anything. Can someone explain why the number of nurses is required when there’s 1-2 on triage, HCAs do the scut, and doctors do the medicine - what duties are the nurses carrying out on Paeds A and E?

I'm presuming you never stop working when you're at work - no talking to colleagues, no cups of tea, just constantly getting on with it for all 7 or 8 hours of the day? And what is that job, just so we can compare it and the value it brings?

GreyGoose1980 · 16/03/2023 21:03

As previous posters have said OP the wait will be for the Dr to view the X ray. They don’t just work in paed A and E, they will be in the main children’s wards too and may be being diverted to attend to some seriously ill children . I know it’s frustrating when our children are in pain but you’ve not actually been there that long at all. Getting frustrated with the nurses won’t help anyone.

br0kenankle · 16/03/2023 21:03

@scaryeleneve I don't know what you mean? I have only posted this under this name.

You just cant take face value of what they are doing (chatting, eating, etc )
its a very stressful job with not great salary and they are doing it day in and day out.
these are the people got a decent grade and got accepted and worked hard for four years and more. And why would they be doing that if they don't care?

Supersands · 16/03/2023 21:04

Wow it’s a hospital. There are people dying on some wards, right now. You haven’t been waiting long.

kezzieliza · 16/03/2023 21:05

This isn't my experience. My ds has a heart condition which means his heart can beat dangerously fast and whenever we have turned up at a&e he has been seen immediately.

Bunnyfuller · 16/03/2023 21:05

I work for the police.

Tistheseason17 · 16/03/2023 21:05

It's people like OP that make NHS staff leave the profession.
A small amount of over entitled people make the most unpleasant noise.
Get a grip and look forward to a private healthcare system. Your "tax" does not cover the entire NHS cost - drop in the ocean. When your private insurance invoice comes then you can say you're paying fir it and have higher expectations.
Here, have a biscuit 🍪 and learn patience.

I just dont understand why we put up with crap service just because it is the NHS

FFS how can you be unaware that the NHS has been systematically underfunded & undermined for decades, & is currently being eyed up & asset stripped by foreign business interests?

Viviennemary · 16/03/2023 21:05

Thatmdoesnt seem a long wait at all. Your dd hasnt got anything life threatening. They could be dealing with a major incident like a serious traffic crash. But I agree far too many folk messing about on computers these days. Seems more time is spent attending to computers rather than patients.
