AIBU to ask how many steps equates to what distance for you, how long that takes you (if you know) and your height?

I’m 5’ 5 and a half. 1.6 miles is around 3,000 steps but that’s with small children in tow so maybe smaller steps.

abcde124 · 16/03/2023 06:52

I'm 5'11
Workdays I average between 5k-8k
Days off and weekends averages 10k-14k
We have two children under 9 that are good walkers. We walk a lot and I'm always moving around the house.
Walk both kids to school and back on my days off which boosts my count by 1500 steps.

Standbyguest · 16/03/2023 06:54

Our walk to and from school is 1.4 miles and that's usually around 4k steps

Howlongdoesittake · 16/03/2023 06:54

I'm 5'6', 63. Target is 6,000 but usually hit anywhere between 6k and 11k. 18,000 steps is around 14km
10,000 is usually assessed as 5km

londonrach · 16/03/2023 06:55

I averaged 11 k to 14k steps a day...did 16 k a day ago. I do more during the week to the weekend. It shocked me how much I walk and can't understand why I'm not stick thin. I'm a ahp and a mum who walks to school. I'm 5 foot 4

AutisticLegoLover · 16/03/2023 06:57

12,000 steps is 5 miles for me. I've averaged around 22,000 steps per day this week and that's fairly typical for me.

Wildlynx · 16/03/2023 06:57

I don't know for walking but jogging I usually hit 10k steps around 8km. I'm about 5'6

Ralphschocolate · 16/03/2023 06:59

I'm 5ft 9. 1 mile is approx 2000 steps and takes 16 mins.

VintageThoughts · 16/03/2023 07:01

I'm 5'6" and one mile equals 2000 steps.

Runssometimes · 16/03/2023 07:02

I am doing c. 8,200 a day and that’s about 5.1km on average per day. I’m 160cm or 5 foot 3.
That’s a bit less than I did last year where I averaged 5.5km a day - I was aiming to walk 2022kms in the year and did achieve it. Have set myself a target of 2023 this year so will need to do some long walks to bring the average up.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 16/03/2023 07:04

I do between 8000 and 10000 a day which for me, at 5'3" is 3.5 to 4.5 miles.

HistoryOrHistrionics · 16/03/2023 07:04

2500 steps per mile.

5 foot 8.

Fuctifin0 · 16/03/2023 07:09

5'5", 18,000 steps = 8.5 miles

Shivermytimber · 16/03/2023 07:10

5ft 8- 3 miles = approx 5500-6000 steps

dietcokelime · 16/03/2023 07:14

A little over 2,000 - but I'm over 6", most of me being leg!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/03/2023 07:15

I'm 5.5 and to the end of my road it's 1k which is about 1500 steps.

Sausagenbacon · 16/03/2023 07:15

I'm starting to try to do 10k steps a say, but for some reason my phone step tracker advises 6k as the ideal.
But what I'd like to know is where does this figure come from? Is it something plucked from the air, like eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, or drinking 2 litres of water.

Wildlynx · 16/03/2023 06:57

I don't know for walking but jogging I usually hit 10k steps around 8km. I'm about 5'6

Yes it's about the same walking for me

Vegalam · 16/03/2023 07:16

7km (4.35miles) is around 10000 steps for me at 5'8

WindowGazers · 16/03/2023 07:17

I do between 13 and 14k steps a day and that's usually about 6 miles. I'm 5"8

twirlbite · 16/03/2023 07:19

5'3" 10000 steps is 5k, aim for 15-20k daily.

Wanttobeyou · 16/03/2023 07:20

I'm 5'1, I need to walk at least 4 miles to get to 10k steps, but if I'm running then I need to go a bit further.

Approx:

7km = 10k steps (running)
6km = 10k steps (walking)

Purplehyena · 16/03/2023 07:20

Around 5 miles to hit 10k steps for me (I have pretty short legs).

Wanttobeyou · 16/03/2023 07:22

"The idea of walking 10,000 steps a day was invented as part of the marketing campaign for an early pedometer ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Japanese character for 10,000 looks rather like a person walking so the device was called the Manpo-kei or 10,000 steps meter."

Most phones come with pre-set targets, but you can change them manually and also enter your height, weight and sometimes stride length to get more accurate readings and goal reminders etc.
