To see someone born in 1968 as young?

Speaking to someone yesterday who's just turned 55. He goes to the gym every morning, is 'hot' imo - as lean as a young man of 18 or so. No tattoos, no beard .. and a great sense of fun - really good company.

I personally still see him as youthful 😊

So do you see someone born in 1968 as young (relatively) ?

I'm thinking of buying a myself a Morris Minor to get into the spirit of all things '68! Grin

No.

ToughOleBird · 14/03/2023 14:24

He’s younger than me, so yes.

I would’ve thought middle age was 35-40 though, not 55.

@MrsRandom123

what does weight have to do with it??

Unfortunately, people do tend to associate weight with age, even though there’s often no correlation.

My SIL’s are 9 years apart, but people have assumed that SIL2 is the older sister due to her weight, She’s morbidly obese, whereas SIL1 is slim. It’s really upset SIL2 ☹️.

maddy68 · 14/03/2023 14:27

Yes. I remember my mum being 40 and she seemed ancient!

I do think ages have blurred over time. , Fashion is largely the same old or young , as are hobbies

People are younger for longer

LookingOldTheseDays · 14/03/2023 14:27

My definitions are:

0-13 - Child
13-17 - Adolescent
18-39 - Young
40-60 - Middle aged
60-75 - Older people
75+ - "The elderly"

LookingOldTheseDays · 14/03/2023 14:28

Someone from any of those adult categories could be attractive, energetic, and youthful in attitude to life.

I'm a similar age and much as I'd like to think I'm young I know that I'm not. Mid to late fifties isn't even really middle aged unfortunately. I wish it was.

I’m 61 and I don’t think I’m elderly yet!

Fladdermus · 14/03/2023 14:29

I was born in 72. I feel positively ancient. Everything aches, the youngsters irritate me, and I just want to sit under a blanket with my cat and a hot water bottle of an evening and watch a bit of telly.

Eightiesgirl · 14/03/2023 14:30

He's young to me because I was born in 1967!

diddl · 14/03/2023 14:31

So you only think of him as young because he's "hot"?

MotherOfDragon20 · 14/03/2023 14:35

Depends on the context of the conversation. If someone born in 1968 passed away, yes I would say that’s young. Someone born in 1968 getting married or starting a family, obviously not young.

ShimmeringShirts · 14/03/2023 14:35

Nope, same age as my mum so definitely in the “older and way too old for me to find attractive” category!

Sorry posted too soon - I think a lean body makes a difference

It does, but unfortunately I don't have a lean body. Would love one, but it isn't currently happening. ☹️

Porkandbeans1 · 14/03/2023 14:40

No. By definition a young person is someone who has only lived for a short period of time. When you've lived passed the middle point of life expectancy then there is no way you can be called young.

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/03/2023 14:40

Going by the longevity of some of my family (3 grandparents lived to be over 90 and currently have an uncle aged 99) and my own age (born 66) he is young.

TroysMammy · 14/03/2023 14:41

I'd say he is young but then again I was also born in 1968 😂.

Parky04 · 14/03/2023 14:42

My OH was born in 1968 and they aren't young!

ChestnutGrove · 14/03/2023 14:45

I'm 52 and don't feel young but middle aged. Especially as I'm the age of some mumsnetters' parents.

MaireadMcSweeney · 14/03/2023 14:45

My DP is lean, toned and sexy af, doesn't look his age but at 51 he's not young! His creaky joints, night time wee habit and deteriorating eyesight attest to that!
however if you fancy him and want to pursue something that's up to you! You're a full grown adult 😁 just bear in mind his body isn't as young as it might appear and in ten years he will be sliding towards being old.

HamBone · 14/03/2023 14:46

It’s definitely nice that he’s fresh-faced and lean at 55, as any people aren’t, if we’re totally honest. My BIL (also 55) is v. lean and fit, but has a lined face and little hair, he doesn’t look young. DH (50) is podgier, with thick curls and barely a line on his face.

The combination of all three by 55 is fairly rare. 🤣

HamBone · 14/03/2023 14:47

*many people

TheDogthatDug · 14/03/2023 14:48

Depends on his outlook on life. IMO that is more a deciding factor than actual age. There are some young people who seem very old and vice versa.

in ten years he will be sliding towards being old

Agree with this, although he won't just be sliding towards being old - he'll be nearly able to claim his state pension!

The difference between a 32 year old and a youthful/energetic 55 year old isn't that big. But the gap between a 52 year old and a 75 year old is enormous.

Not all illness is due to lifestyle.
I know there are people who probably judge my disabled husband thinking it is self created.

I think they key words here are “it’s possible”. It’s not a given though.

Three years ago, I felt ten years older than I do now because of osteoarthritis. I’ve since had two joint replacements and my vitality is returning. I do realise I’m very lucky. 💐

Beaverbridge · 14/03/2023 14:56

Middle aged.
