To see someone born in 1968 as young?

Speaking to someone yesterday who's just turned 55. He goes to the gym every morning, is 'hot' imo - as lean as a young man of 18 or so. No tattoos, no beard .. and a great sense of fun - really good company.

I personally still see him as youthful 😊

So do you see someone born in 1968 as young (relatively) ?

I'm thinking of buying a myself a Morris Minor to get into the spirit of all things '68! Grin

"I think a lean body makes a difference"

It's keeping the muscle mass strong and balance etc.

HamBone · 14/03/2023 14:08

A lean body certainly makes a difference, OP, but I know lean 80-year-olds!

He sounds fit and active so may live until his 90’s, but that still makes him middle-aged.

Sekena · 14/03/2023 14:08

@HamBone - I suppose it's the fact he looks so fresh faced

I'm a similar age and much as I'd like to think I'm young I know that I'm not. Mid to late fifties isn't even really middle aged unfortunately. I wish it was.

Oh come on, of course it’s middle aged… how can 55 be old (if that’s what you’re saying) if 95 is old?

I’m 54. I’m not young. But I’ll be buggered if I’ll answer to ‘old’ just yet.

LakeTiticaca · 14/03/2023 14:09

A couple of generations ago he would have been considered old.
Some people, men and women still look good in their 50s, by good luck or taking care of themselves. Some don't look so good.
compared to my grandparents who were born early 20th century people seem to look much younger in their 40/50/60s now then back then

Sekena · 14/03/2023 14:09

Choconut · 14/03/2023 14:08

Sounds like you fancy the pants off him! Just how much older than you is he though?

22 years older !

JuliesBicycle · 14/03/2023 14:10

I agree it is not middle aged. Most people do not live till well over a 100.

The real issue is that in our world youth is so elevated that most people want to deny they are older or old.

HamBone · 14/03/2023 14:10

That’s what I was thinking, @Choconut 😉

Yes totally agree

At 55 he's approx 68% of the way through his life (based on average life expectancy in the UK), so definitely not young.

Lotus717 · 14/03/2023 14:11

I think you just think he’s gorgeous so you are trying to redefine your terminology! He is about 23 years older than you!
He could be your dad!
If that hasn’t grimmed you out then he is definitely young 😂

JuliesBicycle · 14/03/2023 14:11

My grandmother took very good care of herself. But people dressed more formally back then so did look older.

Wishimaywishimight · 14/03/2023 14:12

I was born in 1968, I am not so deluded as to say I am 'young' however neither am I 'old'. Attitude is hugely important though. I feel quite young, am thankfully in good health, exercise every day and am still keen to learn new things, currently seeking out new hobbies.

On the other hand I have a friend of the same age who speaks of herself as 'old' very frequently, leaves the house only to go to work, never socialises any more, won't even meet up for coffee, is "too tired after work" to do anything and is planning on retiring at 60, after which I fully expect her to become a recluse which is terribly sad as we both (hopefully!!) may have decades of life left to live.

I'm 32

He's middle aged but middle age, if you're doing it right, is young these days iyswim?!

I'm in my 30s, my partner in his 50s. He is in extremely good nick, very lean, youthful skin, thick dark hair etc etc - as far as I'm concerned we're both healthy, active, working age adults with professional jobs and many shared interests. The age gap is no biggy at all (or not at this stage of our lives anyway).

Ask the hotty out!

MissingMoominMamma · 14/03/2023 13:41

Yeah- he’s younger than me 😁.

What you’re talking about though is vitality. Not everyone has it, in fact lots of younger people lack it because of lifestyle.

He sounds great actually!

I agree with this. I see some young people who are visibly unhealthy, sluggish, shuffling along etc. And then I see some middle aged and older people who look healthy, energetic, walking briskly etc.

We associate energy and vitality with youth, but actually it's possible (given good diet, exercise and lifestyle) to retain that energy well into middle age and beyond.

It doesn't make them young though, it just means they're probably in good health.

Clioma · 14/03/2023 14:15

Im 57. I don't feel old, I still think of myself as young. I can't believe that I'm nearer 60 than 50!

But I said that late 50s isn't really middle aged as I don't expect to live to 114. I've had more of my life than I have ahead of me, sadly. Realistically late 40s is probably middle aged.

But they're just labels. It's about how you feel and think. I'm lucky enough to currently enjoy good health and think I have a young outlook. I know people younger than me who seem older.

I know a couple like this in their thirties. Some people do not want to go out.

MrsRandom123 · 14/03/2023 13:59

How old are you? I wouldn’t see them
as young but i wouldn’t see them
as old either. I’d just see them as middle aged (even though no one lives til 110!)

being in your 50s doesn’t mean you have to be over weight or unfit or look a certain way - you can still take care of yourself and look good but it doesn’t make you young again

@MrsRandom123

what does weight have to do with it??

doadeer · 14/03/2023 14:16

No, young is under 30 for me.

They are middle aged.

Crabwoman · 14/03/2023 14:16

My DM was born in 66' so sort of.

I'm in my late 30's though and usually attracted to men 15-20 years older. That's ket to a few interesting conversations 😂

Not all illness is due to lifestyle.
I know there are people who probably judge my disabled husband thinking it is self created.

MyMumsOnMN · 14/03/2023 14:17

Well it's not youngis it. He's fit and healthy by the sounds of it but he's not young.

HedgehogB · 14/03/2023 14:18

Ha ha love this post as my very hot tall dark muscly lean DH was born in 1968. But he’s not young. For a very fit hot middle aged man take a look at Kelly Jones (Stereophonics, Far from Saints) will you now please.

WinterMusings · 14/03/2023 14:15

@MrsRandom123

what does weight have to do with it??

Weight is a visible indicator of health and fitness (no one is claiming that all slim people are healthy, but physically fit people are more likely to be a healthy weight). And as a general rule, people are more likely to gain weight as they age - so we associate being a healthy weight with youth and energy.
