Does anyone else get fed up with people writing posts with so many confusing abbreviations on here . I’m fed up with them . Can people not just write in English . Even common ones like dh ? Is that direct husband , dickhead husband , dead husband ?? Drives me nuts . Just put husband . There’s loads .
ds , dh, dm , nc , lc , and on and on and on . Even read one today that was gsd ? I thought I’d that a good short dance , or gravy so divine, no it’s what German Shepherd dog 😂😂
Just write English for Christ sake .
Ps I’ve put this on the AIBU page , know idea what it means !

I agree it's really weird

VoluptuaGoodshag · 14/03/2023 08:24

I’ve always hated them and I’ve been on here a long time. I especially dislike the DH, DD whatever. Do we go about calling them that in daily life, no. And given how much folk can type in one go, typing out something like hubby, so or daughter shouldn’t be too arduous.

aineoverseas · 14/03/2023 08:25

There's a whole page for mn acronyms https://www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms

HyacinthineMacaw · 14/03/2023 08:25

I do agree, but they are clearly here to stay. Try this:

www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms

HTH 😁

Brendabigbaps · 14/03/2023 08:26

a new one in me this morning, AS? Turns out it’s something son. But what!

Cornettoninja · 14/03/2023 08:26

its just shorthand for speed purposes. It’s really common in loads of contexts, not just the internet/MN

Annoyingwurringnoise · 14/03/2023 08:26

People generally know what the abbreviations mean, and I believe there might be a page on here where they are listed, so YABU to expect MN to change its culture just for you.

lazycats · 14/03/2023 08:27

The ‘dear’ is really annoying. Just write “H”, it’s no less obvious.

strawberryicecreamice · 14/03/2023 08:27

@Brendabigbaps thought that was a typo

Silverlog · 14/03/2023 08:28

YABU Grin

Luckingfovely · 14/03/2023 08:28

If you don't like one of the main features of this forum, then maybe it's not the most calming place for you to be? It's a quintessential MN quirk. And is really not that complicated. 'D' means dear in front of any relation name. I grant DS could be Son or Sister but context makes it fairly evident.

GSD is a common term for that breed in general parlance, nothing to do with MN.

I also like the fact that a PP suggests writing SO instead of DH or DP. Waaaaay better Grin

PhoenixReincarnated · 14/03/2023 08:32

I think the advantage of the D in front of the H is that if you're feeling fond of him it can be dear. If not then it can be dickhead 🤔😉🤣

B0g · 14/03/2023 08:35

It's been common internet parlance for about 20 years. There's an acronym page if you're struggling. Some threads take the piss, with darling step granddaughter the second, and darling friend, father and fiance all in one mess of an opening post. I'm sure there's other forums you'll find less frustrating?

elizzza · 14/03/2023 08:38

I don’t mind DH/DP, we all know what it means, but I do find it difficult when someone’s posting about a family drama and there’s a son, a sister, a stepson, a DN who is ND…

DogInATent · 14/03/2023 08:40

GSD in the Doghouse would be fairly obvious to the target readers, it just gets confusing for the tourists when a thread pops up on Active. Likewise, the target audience would quickly figure out SBT in that section of the site too.

@Brendabigbaps - you and me both, I can't decided if AS is someone inventing a new acronym for Autistic Son or a typo for DS. AS is used so consistently by the OP of that thread for so many posts before they slip in a DS. I think they also used AD at one point?

PandasAreUseless · 14/03/2023 08:41

I use 'DH' because that's how this forum seems to work, but I have to say it cringes me out and I do find it very twee and frumpy.

takealettermsjones · 14/03/2023 08:44

I thought (in that thread) AS was adult son, AD adult daughter. Could be wrong though!

sevenbyseven · 14/03/2023 08:46

Using DS1, DS2, DD, etc is quicker and easier than having to say "my eldest son", "my middle son" and so on. Especially when not using their names on a public forum.

I like the MN acronyms 🙂

NoSquirrels · 14/03/2023 08:49

Ever since the dawn of the internet people have used shorthand abbreviations. HTH.

OnlyFannys · 14/03/2023 08:49

It's fairly standard on the internet and there is a page for helping you understand the acronyms, it's a time saver. The only one I laugh at is DDog as it would be quicker to just write dog 🤦‍♀️

ssd · 14/03/2023 08:50

Its the ones in the threads about transpeople or the feminist threads that totally loose me.
Its like a secret club only the smart ones belong too.

furryfrontbottom · 14/03/2023 08:51

I find the abbreviations cringey AF.

PearlClutzsche · 14/03/2023 08:52

Every forum will have its jargon, implicit and explicit rules, and expected modes of behaviour.

People come on to MN because they like it and identify with its "character" and groupthink, and enjoy being part if the community.

Using established acronyms, as well as longstanding in-jokes and clichés helps with a sense of belonging and identifying with the community; it's very common and normal, like wearing a uniform.

Most of the acronyms are easy to understand or work out, although a few are a bit ambiguous: BF... breastfeeding, boyfriend or best friend? SIL... son- or sister-in-law? But generally they can be worked out by context.

The only time I really struggle is when there are illnesses or health conditions, e.g. something like: "DS has been diagnosed with DFR, and his OT has said he said have sessions of FRT"

But then if I don't know what that means then I'm in no position to advise or make a common anyway.

I do know what a GSD is, because I have an interest in dogs!

I think YABU, OP... the acronyms are not too challenging really, are they?

SoupDragon · 14/03/2023 08:52

furryfrontbottom · 14/03/2023 08:51

I find the abbreviations cringey AF.

And yet you use an abbreviation...

WandaWonder · 14/03/2023 08:53

Dd, ds, dh was the only 3 I remember from my forum days of about 16 or so years ago so will use them, it feels weird writing 'my husband' sounds too formal really

I can't get my head around and of the others

I am so used to dh etc it is quick but a lot of others I think would take longer to think and type so to me not worth it
