To go to A&E

Unbelievably heavy period for me.
Day 3 of it literally falling out of me. I am bleeding through lil lets ultra in about a hour, sometimes 2.
Small clots too, size of a 5p.
Last night the cramps started and I am in a bit of pain from them which is not normal for me at all.
Eventually I fell into such a deep sleep I didn't hear any alarms going off this morning, or the children waking up.
Usually I have heavy periods but this is just crazy. I stood up off the toilet last night to try and have a look and it was running out of me.
Sorry TMI but I'm worried and feel horrible.

I haven't called or went to A&E as I'm waiting on the children being picked up and my DP getting home.

While I've been waiting the bleeding seems to have eased a little, and my cramps have stopped. But I suspected that's cos I'm lying down...

DP will be bringing home the tran.acid stuff so I will get on that.

Many GP's are on strike today.

Only junior doctors are on strike. 95% of gps are not junior doctors.

15 years not 15th arms 😂

No GP appointments today.

I guess I'm concerned as to what is causing it.

@OnNaturesCourse I once had a freakishly heavy period- While I was out walking, I could feel a huge clot pass , in my very early 30’s- Had to take my jumper off to wrap around my middle to hide evidence as the tiny pad I used was hopeless!
I remember exactly where I was, to this day.

Never had it happen before or since- It was shocking and scary.

It was painful, too. Doctor was unconcerned.

I hope you feel better soon.

IsAGirlMumma · 13/03/2023 16:02

Sorry if tmi...

I had similar about 7-8 years ago. Though clots the size of my fist. Was leaking through a pad and my jeans in 20 mins. Went to a&e on advice of 111. Was expecting some kind of scan. They literally did a urine same (there were huge clots of the cardboard bowel they made me pee into.) Told me I wasn't pregnant and sent me on my way.

When I followed up with my gp and a gynaecologist it turned out I had fibroids.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 16:15

Finally... My tampon lasted 4 hours albeit it was super full and showing blood on wiping. My pad was clean.

DP home with the acid stuff now so have taken two.

Feel loads better just having DP home tbh. Still a shaky and have a headache starting.

Norethisterone is also something you can take to stop heavy bleeding whilst you are waiting for bloods/scan.

Hope the tranexamic acid works for you to lighten the bleed. If you can take them, NSAIDs like ibuprofen are also good to help with cramping.

beckslovestimmy · 13/03/2023 16:50

I tried tranexamic acid but didn't find it much help. I know lots of people do. It just made the bleeding into huge clots. I'm now taking Mefenamic acid and it's amazing! I take it for 3 days (my heaviest days) I now no longer need to use the biggest tampon and can go at least 4 hrs before changing it. I thought it worth posting just in case you don't find the tranexamic acid helpful. Hopefully you do.

BroomHandledMouser · 13/03/2023 17:14

Sorry you’re going through this, it’s utterly shit.

I have a thing called adenomyosis - www.nbt.nhs.uk/our-services/a-z-services/gynaecology/adenomyosis

Maybe this could be the cause of it? They found it through a scan as I went to the GP complaining of the same symptoms. Hope you get sorted soon

JustDanceAddict · 13/03/2023 17:36

My last one was like that but ‘m in peri and have fibroids. I don’t think I could’ve gone to work - luckily was wfh when it was really bad.
I’ve also had horrifically heavy periods when I had a uterine polyp so there are loads of reasons for this.
if it’s really bad I’d call the GP - they can prescribe something to slow the flow.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 19:14

Think I asked this already but... The tablets, how long do they the to work usually? Is it really 24 hours.

My period has all but stopped now.

I've had two doses of the acid.

I'm still feeling washed out but I guess I need time to catch up.

WhyDoesItAlways · 13/03/2023 20:36

I've found tranexamic acid to work pretty quickly, within a couple of hours. Go easy next few days and if you don't feel better get your iron etc checked.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 20:45

Did you find it almost stopped your period? Mines has gone pretty light now, its red and pink and very little amount.

Irisheyesareshining · 13/03/2023 21:45

@OnNaturesCourse hi, she was ok they had to put her on high doses of iron and then the pill . I was so upset as her heart rate was so high and she looked translucent. She ended up in hospital as she passed out . All her scans were normal , the pill has been an absolute game changer for her despite me having concerns about it .

Tophy124 · 13/03/2023 22:38

@OnNaturesCourse for me my main endo symptom is heavy periods. My cycles are very regular and pain fluctuates.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 22:42

I am glad she has found her solution. I was on the pill for 11 years before having my children. So I guess it could have been masking these heavy periods all that time.

I guess I just need to anxiously wait on my scan now, 6 weeks minimum wait seems a lifetime right now.

Bepis · 13/03/2023 23:49

I'm so glad to read that the bleeding has stopped. I bet you are relieved.

BoatyMcbootface · 14/03/2023 08:22

@OnNaturesCourse Great to hear the acid did the job. Rest up as much as possible and get yourself to the docs for a full blood count while you wait for the scan. Best of luck, get well soon x

OnNaturesCourse · 14/03/2023 08:38

Bloods for what?

The bloods they done last month are fine, I think it was mainly iron count etc, so I want to be specific in what I'm asking for this time.

I might give them a call today anyway as my period has stopped completely now

OP posts:
BoatyMcbootface · 14/03/2023 08:51

Haemoglobin and ferritin mainly OP. Look out for dizziness, breathlessness, high heart rate and palpitations too - all signs you've become anemic due to the blood loss.

Yes.

There's been such ignorance on this thread, some of it shown by someone claiming to be knowledgeable.

I'm not an HCP. I'm only speaking from my experience.

Just because this might be fibroids or endometriosis or the start of perimenopause doesn't mean you don't need urgent medical attention for severe blood loss.

I'm so pleased yours has stopped now.
Uncontrollable bleeding needs treatment, especially alongside your other symptoms.

You've responded well to the tranexamic acid, so that may well be all you need. Take it as your period starts and it will reduce the bleeding.

I had a coil, which actually made things worse (I know it helps for some). When it was removed blood and clots were falling from me like this, but tranexamic acid did stop it when I remembered to take it!

I was used to my periods gradually getting heavier, and eventually being uncontrollable. I found ways to manage, but if I hadn't, if I'd been lightheaded, woozy, palpitations etc then I would have needed medical attention.

You can have impossibly hard periods and not need to go to A&E, I agree, but you can also NEED to go, for impossibly hard periods. Blood loss is blood loss. You can't afford to lose too much, even if you are a woman on a period!

OnNaturesCourse · 14/03/2023 09:03

I had those symptoms for the last three days but today, so far, they seem to be gone. I actually woke up refreshed this morning, first time since this period started. But I'll request them anyway.

OP posts:
OnNaturesCourse · 14/03/2023 09:21

Thanks pickle.

My period has completely stopped today so I am wondering if my dose is too high? I'm on 2 tablets, 3 times a day... Only took two doses yesterday so 4 tablets in total.

Its turned my stomach a bit rotten too and I have horrible gas pains.

Can't win really lol.

I have booked a private scan for next week. Can't afford it but my anxiety isn't going to let me wait 6 weeks for a NHS one.

I had terrible, flooding periods like this when I had a fibroid. I was dangerously anaemic and rarely left the house as the bleeding was horrific.

The GP was useless. I was tried on every sort of contraception imaginable, some of which made me actively suicidal. Tranexamic acid did nothing for me. Eventually I was referred to gynae and the doctor wad awful - she said the fibroid was too small for surgery (fair enough), so I could either put up and shut up or opt for an endometrial ablation, which could leave me infertile (I was only 31!).

In absolute desperation, I went to my local GUM clinic. They were wonderful. I was put on a mini-pill containing norethisterone, and it was life-changing. I sobbed with gratitude, genuinely.
