Unbelievably heavy period for me.
Day 3 of it literally falling out of me. I am bleeding through lil lets ultra in about a hour, sometimes 2.
Small clots too, size of a 5p.
Last night the cramps started and I am in a bit of pain from them which is not normal for me at all.
Eventually I fell into such a deep sleep I didn't hear any alarms going off this morning, or the children waking up.
Usually I have heavy periods but this is just crazy. I stood up off the toilet last night to try and have a look and it was running out of me.
Sorry TMI but I'm worried and feel horrible.

I only have the symptoms when on or just starting my period.

But I'll keep it in mind for when I get checked.

@SeasonFinale thats my biggest worry. Cancer. Glad you were clear of it.

I was "lucky" at the time I had these symptoms because it was when Jade Goodey had just been diagnosed so the GPs were all over it then as she hadnt been diagnosed. Tell them your fear and tell them you know it can be overlooked.

Sunshineandshowers42 · 13/03/2023 14:21

Sorry, I haven't RTFT, but if you are able to take it, ibuprofen can slow the bleeding.

w33bird78 · 13/03/2023 14:22

OnNaturesCourse I work at 111. They won't get you an appointment with GP but a clinician will assess you and advise you on what to do. I suspect if your presenting with systematic symptoms of haemorrhage ie raised HR, lightheaded, tired etc they will advise A&E.

2022again · 13/03/2023 14:30

@OnNaturesCourse do you think you could have caught covid by any chance???

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 14:31

I wouldn't have thought so, but I could test.

Children both recovering from tonsillitis and older one has suspected chickenpox so it would just be one more thing to add to the list in this house.

Anything out if the ordinary warrants attention, and I would have called 111.

ComebackQueen · 13/03/2023 14:41

I’d go straight to A&E I know someone who caught sepsis and almost died during their period.

I’ve suffered and suffering from endometriosis and have awfully heavy and painful periods but that’s been consistent since my very first period.

It’s obviously unusual for you hence the post, please go to A&E my dear.

Albiboba · 13/03/2023 14:45

@w33bird78 I work at 111. They won't get you an appointment with GP but a clinician will assess you and advise you on what to do

As part of the triaging I’ve had 111 book an appointment with my own fully booked GP on multiple occasions.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 14:46

Thank you all for your help and support.

I think I will phone GP back or head to A&E if the bleeding is still as bad or the cramps are still present by the time DP gets home. Until then I'm just trying to take it easy. Have brought some snacks and toys out for the children and basically turned the TV on to let them get on with it for the afternoon. Sure they will be fine...

Got my massive cup of juice and water too, feet up and resting.

If it's not normal for you, ask for a duty GP to call you.

My peri-menopause meant I had very heavy painful periods (before I had a mirena coil). Changing super plus extra tampons every 20 minutes, flooding if I stood from sitting, passing clots the size of the palm of my hand. It made life quite challenging, especially working.

Aweebitpainful · 13/03/2023 14:58

I personally think you should be seen by someone. Especially if the blood loss is making you dizzy

Tophy124 · 13/03/2023 14:59

I have had a cyst burst and it was like this. I also have v heavy periods and bleed like you are now the first 2 days each cycle! It’s awful. I have endometriosis and so it’s tallied up to that but if you are anemic it will actually make you bleed more!! Tranxemic acid in my experience can act quite fast and so I’d go and get it and start asap, but if this bleeding is really abnormal for you I would want to be seen just the double check!

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 15:08

Endo is another one I have considered I might have as I do have that in my both sides of the family, but I don't believe endo has heavy periods as a main symptom? It's more pain and irregular cycles? Perhaps I am very wrong and need to Google but I'm avoiding Google just now as it does my anxiety no favors.

I have very heavy periods like you that last 6-7 days too, do you have polycystic ovaries OP?
Also my periods became worse this last year after having Lletz treatment for abnormal cells and still haven't calmed down, have u had anything similar recently?

Rosula · 13/03/2023 15:12

SnappyTheCrocodile · 13/03/2023 09:03

My periods are usually like this. It doesn’t sound like you’re haemorrhaging or anything, just a horrible very heavy period. Can you call the GP and ask for some tranexamic acid? Or is there a local walk in centre?

If OP doesn't normally have periods like this, it clearly is something she needs to check out.

DOBARDAN · 13/03/2023 15:13

This has happened to me a few times, years ago,
I was so concerned I contacted my GP surgery,
They didn’t take any action and were dismissive about it,
I ended up having iron deficiency and needed to take iron tablets for a long while,
I hope you will receive better treatment

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 15:14

No, nothing like that.

Only thing I had was a few cysts when I was 17 that landed me in hospital with pain. Then in each pregnancy a single cyst was found in early scans (apparently all pretty normal)

OP posts:
Silverlog · 13/03/2023 15:14

I was like that with fibroids.

Dottyandbetty · 13/03/2023 15:20

Have you managed to speak to 111 they may be able to give advice and help you to make a decision on the best course of action, if you’re feeling unwell too you’re best getting checked over and fully assessed. Do you have a walk in centre close to you?

I have very heavy periods and started to get clots more recently which were unusual for me. Apparently it’s caused by the blood collecting together before it leaves the uterus so although it looks alarming it can be very common with heavy bleeding. I was sent for a scan of my uterus and ovaries and also really panicked about cancer etc but all was clear other than some small fibroids. One way of measuring blood loss is to weigh your sanitary products after use, the difference in grams between the new and used can be directly converted to ml e.g. 10g is 10ml.

You know your body so if you’re worried definitely get checked over but equally try not to panic too as that can make you feel so much worse. I hope you’re able to get to the bottom of it.

KnittingNeedles · 13/03/2023 15:23

You sound like me before I had my hysterectomy. The cause was fibroids - which are nearly almost non-cancerous - and are incredibly common. They don't cause issues for every woman but can make your periods ridiculously heavy. I recognise a lot of what you are saying about soaking through the largest tampons available very quickly. It got to the stage I was losing so much blood that I was using both tampon and maternity towels to cope. Sleeping on towels overnight. Had to plan my life 1 week a month around where I could get quickly to a toilet. Just horrendous.

Tranexamic acid did work fairly well for me, cut the blood loss by about a third. There is lots that can be done though -get back to the GP and ask firstly for a referral for an ultrasound to look at what is going on with your uterus, and then a referral to gynaecology to discuss your options.

And do NOT be fobbed off by a GP telling you it's "just one of those things".

w33bird78 · 13/03/2023 15:31

Albiboba 111 may operate differently depending on what part of the uk you live. In my area we can only refer to out-of-hours gp services between 18.00 -08.00 Mon-Fri and 24hrs at weekends and public holidays. Out within these hours it own GP.

Beaniesmumsie · 13/03/2023 15:36

I don’t know how or why you haven’t called 111 back or your GP. Major blood loss could cause some serious problems. I’m pleased it sounds like it’s easing off and I hope you’ll feel better soon.

Flowersinmai · 13/03/2023 15:40

Definitely have a blood test for anemia. It can make your periods a lot heavier. If that’s the situation then an Iron transfusion is a quicker option than tablets to resolve it.

Banjaxx · 13/03/2023 15:44

@OnNaturesCourse if you have enforced on both sides of the family you may we’ll want to consider it a possibility. There is also adenomyosis, which is essentially endo in the muscle wall of the uterus which can cause heavy bleeding and could definitely be a root cause. I’m a veteran of both unfortunately and took 15th arms and unexplained infertility to finally get taken seriously after years of horrendous bleeding and endless anaemia.
