WIU not to give her another banana?

isurvived3under2 · 11/03/2023 21:59

DD is nearly 5. Tonight she asked for a banana after dinner, which I said she could have. 5 minutes later she asked for another banana. I enquired what had happened to the first banana, she said she had changed her mind and had put it in the bin. But then she changed her mind again and indeed wanted a banana.

WIU to say no to a second banana, let her cry for 20 minutes and send her to bed with a 'rumbly tummy'?

i would have offered toast with only butter (and not much). And there would be very stern discussions about how much food costs and why we don't waste it

Viviennemary · 11/03/2023 22:58

No you are right to say she can't have another one.

TyneTeas · 11/03/2023 22:59

I can't believe how many people would have given a second banana!

LucyLeave · 11/03/2023 23:01

I can't believe how many people would make such a fuss over a bloody banana.

JennyDarlingRIP · 11/03/2023 22:49

@namechangetheworld she'd eaten dinner and pudding directly before the banana, she wasn't going to bed hungry.

So you've never felt peckish before bed and helped yourself to a biscuit? Never had double helpings of dessert? She's a five year old child, not a robot, you can't expect her to eat exactly designated amounts at designated times. I feel like you're all holding to her to much higher standards than you would yourselves in real life.

Why are you so surprised she'd eaten her tea and a pudding and thrown a banana away because she wasn't hungry enough to eat it 20 minutes before asking for another banana. Is the OP supposed to keep providing food choices if she then decided to not eat the second banana?

She's clearly not actually hungry and if she's now fast asleep obviously not being kept awake by her grumbly tummy it seems the OP made a sensible choice.

YABU. It’s only a banana. I would have given her another one; food waste doesn’t bother me 🤷‍♀️ I’ll just buy more.

@FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks

how nice for you! You have so much money you can “just buy more”
good for you!
surely you must realise that is not the case for a lot of families especially with today’s cost of living crisis

Fairydustandsparklylights · 11/03/2023 23:06

Of course you’re being unreasonable. She’s 5 for crying out loud. She made an error in judgement… so you explain to her for future. If your dh had done the same, would you have also told him he wasn’t allowed anything else to eat? Being a small child doesn’t mean she should be treated with less respect, especially when it comes to food. It’s not as if she was asking for chocolate.

As much as the cost of living crisis has taken over the media, it’s only a vocal minority actually suffering from it.

They’re bananas, not steaks 🙄

RoseMartha · 11/03/2023 23:08

I would not have given another banana.
It is wasteful. I would have explained why to her also. She had a eaten good dinner and desert.

@FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks
Not everyone has enough money to just buy more.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/03/2023 23:09

Also, to all those poster bleating on about how of course OP’s should have just unquestioningly be handed over a second banana…
maybe there wasn’t another banana in the house??
believe it or not mumsnetters, not every household has an unlimited, magic of fruit and veg main lined into their kitchen ….

BelindaBears · 11/03/2023 23:09

No I wouldn’t give a second banana if she’d just binned one. If I thought she was actually hungry she could have toast or cereal instead.

you sound sooooooo out of touch….

LucyLeave · 11/03/2023 23:10

I thought all mumsnetters had a never ending fruitbowl that their kids had unlimited access to?

Do you really think someone is a cunt for not giving their child a banana when they’ve thrown a banana in the bin minutes before or are you just trying to sound edgy?

Gosh what a horrible, unnecessary and vile thing to call a loving parent who's only crime is not pandering to a not at all hungry child who threw away the snack she had been given! I'd hate to see what you called someone who actually did something wrong!!

And you sound soooooo dramatic 🙄

If there wasn’t another banana in the house this wouldn’t have even been a question because the answer would have simply been no. So that point is irrelevant.

TyneTeas · 11/03/2023 23:12

@R0ckets I don't understand what you are saying about what I posted.

It sounds like you agree that giving a second banana wasn't required too?

FrostyFifi · 11/03/2023 23:12

Then remind yourself not to be a cunt

You'd do well to take your own advice.

LucyLeave · 11/03/2023 23:12

What difference does it make if you give her some toast or cereal and not another banana.

R0ckets · 11/03/2023 23:14

Apologies I quoted the wrong poster bloody adverts are making actually replying coherently a real challenge today.

You're absolutely right in amazed so many would give her another, we do indeed agree.

Shamdyhandy · 11/03/2023 23:14

not pandering to a hungry child @R0ckets yes, how awful. No - I meant it

Milkand2sugarsplease · 11/03/2023 23:16

Are you sure of her reasoning...? Was the "I decided I didn't want it" actually code for I don't like this banana, it has black bits/funny texture/something similar? And actually, she did want a banana, just not that banana?? Seems a bit odd that she'd ask for it then change her mind and then change her mind again so quickly.

If she can't be hungry ynbu though.

There's only one cunt here and it's not OP. I'm surprised you're able to type, you sound so cunty that you're probably smothered in Canesten.
