To be surprised at height difference between us ?

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 18:47

Last night I showed our DC a pic of me and their dad when we were both 13 - we've known each other a long time - and back then - we both look the same height - I'd say we're both around 5ft 1 - 5 ft 2.

Since then the height differential between us has been massive - at 14 my DP was around 5ft 9 I would say - his final adult height is 5 ft 11. Me? I'm still 5ft 1! So I've not changed since we were 13 - but he's gone - well massive !! AIBU to be surprised at how we were once similar, now massively different ?

The same has probably happened in exactly the same scenario as yours.

My sons are way taller than me, as are most teenage boys, and a lot of teenage girls.

This isn't in any way surprising.

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 19:15

I think it's the difference I find surprising - literally same height at 13 or him an inch taller - at most and then him hugely taller - by 16 actually- he was around 5ft 9 at 14. I might have expected so be around 3 or 4 inches shorter than him as an adult not 10 inches shorter!!

YABU. Are his parents tall? Are yours? That would generally give you a more accurate imagine of what your adult height would be than what your height was at 13.

GiltEdges · 11/03/2023 19:34

5ft11 isn't remotely "massive" for a man though Confused

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 19:36

@steff13 - his parents have both long passed so I'm not 100% but one of his brothers is 6ft. No my parents certainly weren't tall!

5ft 11 isn't massive though? I was my current height when I was 14, taller than most of the boys at same age - within a few years they had all overtaken me (height wise).

DuvetDownn · 11/03/2023 19:36

I stopped growing at 12, my
male cousin grew 6 inches when he was 19.

No that's true actually- amongst his friends he's about middle - not tallest !

Some girls stop growing at 11. I really don’t find it that surprising. I’m not sure what your point is? Your DH was quite short at 13, but then he hasn’t ended up massively tall as an adult. If you were 5 ft 1 at 13, you really weren’t going to end up that tall either. Both my girls did grow after 13 but not that much. My older ds grew a lot, again that’s normal. My 11 an old son is around 5 ft 3, I’m expecting him to be around 6 ft 1 based on his projections in his red book and family height/ his brothers height. You don’t expect a girl to grow around 10/12 inches after early teens, even if they are due a growth spurt.

Also true, it's only 2" above average.

Yes when I see my DH with his friends he's in the middle of the male height ranges not the tallest !

Pics of him at 12 he looks tiny /he actually looks about 6!! Wink

Wouldn’t call 5 foot 9 “massive” for a man 🫢

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/03/2023 19:44

Er, well I can see it would be odd to look at the photo but it clearly isn’t unusual. Girls reach their maximum height much earlier, and men grow to be taller. Your husband is at the tall end of average and you are rather short, so the height gap between you is more than average but not at all abnormal.

EastAngle · 11/03/2023 19:46

Lots of girls have finished growing by 12/14. I don’t know any boys/men that had reached adult height at that age. Just look at the growth charts in the red book (or online) to see that this is normal.

Eyerollcentral · 11/03/2023 20:02

Flip me. I stopped growing at 13 too and am only an inch taller than you. I could still wear jumpers in my last year of school that I had in 3rd year. It’s not unusual at all. The next child down from me in my family is only 18 months younger and he was the same height as me by time he was ten and by 15 was 6 ft 1. I don’t understand why you think this is remarkable. It’s totally normal

ClaireStandishsLipstick · 11/03/2023 20:07

Me and my best friend at school at age 13 were both 5’1” she stayed that height and I went on to be 5’7” I was a very late bloomer.

That the thing it was precisely the jumpers issue that gave me the impression I hadn't grown since 13. I had a jumper at 13 which never got too small for me - not the sleeves - not anything ! Then when I got my height measured in Boots was surprised to learn that I was still 5ft 1 as an adult or 155cm

OP posts:
Littlewhitecat · 11/03/2023 20:09

It's just basic biology. I've been 5ft7 since I was 13 so was taller than a lot of boys at that age because they all tend to grow later than girls. My DD is 5ft10 and has been since 13. My DS was 5ft 8 at 13 but is now 6ft2 at 15 and still growing because he's a boy (with a 6ft5 dad). I don't understand why you think this is odd.

What height did you think you were??? This is bizarre. Had you not been to a doctor? I have never measured myself.

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 20:18

@Eyerollcentral - tbh I didn't know but was used to people calling me short and being the shortest in the spots team at uni. I didn't get myself measured as such but weighed myself in Boots it automatically gives height as well as weight

But the doctor measured and weighed me every time I was there as a teen that’s what I mean?? I just cannot comprehend how this was a surprise to you

I wasn’t a frequent visitor myself but the doctor must have seen you at least once between 13 and 18 and if you were hardly there definitely would have measured and weighed you

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 20:41

@Eyerollcentral - believe it or not - didn't go to the doctor once between 13 and 18 - I went once at 18 for slight shoulder thing but he didn't measure me then !!

Looking back at the marks on the door frame
2013 DD14 5’3”, DS12 5’1”
2014 DD15 5’5” DS13 5’3”
2017 DD18 5’8” DS16 6’0”
2018 DD19 5’10 DS17 6’2”
2019 DS18 6’3”
2020 DS19 6’4”
both mine didn’t stop growing until adulthood

tourdefrance · 11/03/2023 20:46

My 12 year old DS2 has just overtaken me at 5’7”.

Also, interesting genetic fact - daughters are never taller than their father.
