To be surprised at height difference between us ?

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 18:47

Last night I showed our DC a pic of me and their dad when we were both 13 - we've known each other a long time - and back then - we both look the same height - I'd say we're both around 5ft 1 - 5 ft 2.

Since then the height differential between us has been massive - at 14 my DP was around 5ft 9 I would say - his final adult height is 5 ft 11. Me? I'm still 5ft 1! So I've not changed since we were 13 - but he's gone - well massive !! AIBU to be surprised at how we were once similar, now massively different ?

I think you’re being unreasonable to be surprised that your dh adult height is more than when he was 13.
And you’re maybe also unreasonable to suggest you haven’t grown at all since the age of 13. Surely if this was the case you’d have looked into it?

I was 164cm when I measured myself in the hall in Y6 and I still am Confused. It's not unusual to not grow any taller as a 13 YO?

@Eyerollcentral are you American? I never had my height or weight measured as a child or teen at the GP. Not even when I went on the pill at 16 - clearly I looked an average height and weight for my age!

No I was born and brought up in Belfast. It was totally standard in our GP practice, often there would be more than one of us in an appointment and the dr measured and weighed each of us every time

How did you forget what he used to look like as a child?
Why does it surprise you that your grown adult husband used to be shorter when he was 13?
What's going to surprise you next - you look in a mirror & discover you have 2 eyebrows?

Pubesofsoberness · 11/03/2023 21:19

I've not grown since I was 11, I'm 5" 7 almost. My 11 almost 12 year old is about the same height as me now.

I'm used to it now, he's my 3rd and they've all been taller than me by about 12

Mumof1andacat · 11/03/2023 21:27

I reached my adult height (all over 5ft!) by about 13yrs. My Dh says he grew around 1 foot from the age of 12yrs - 18yrs and reached 6ft 2".

Pythonesque · 11/03/2023 21:34

I agree that it is usual for daughters not to be as tall as their fathers, but actually my sister and I both ended up taller (by 1-2") than our father. "Worse" if we were wearing heels!

I don't think I grew much after 13. My own children grew early, DD was tall throughout primary but didn't grow much after 11. DS was stand-out tall in his class at 11 and around 15-16 quite miffed at his friends passing him, as I don't think he has grown more than an inch since 13 (but, he's 6 ft). That's quite unusual for boys; though his father also hit 6 ft by age 12 and stopped a few inches taller. DH was quite startled around age 20 when suddenly his "little" brother was nearly as tall as he was.

mondaytosunday · 11/03/2023 21:44

My daughter stopped growing at 12. She's 5'6 1/2". I'm 5'10".

Ok I lol'd at this Grin - I dunno - was just looking back at some pics when we were younger - we were both very cute at 13 - what happened ? Grin I noticed by the time my DH was 14 he's already as tall as many of the adult males and taller than many females

I'm still 5ft 1 - and a half stone now - exactly same as I was at 13!!

But are you a man?

ChickenDried · 12/03/2023 06:55

@Donnashair - ah no sorry - maybe I should've clarified - I'm female

My 12 year old DS2 has just overtaken me at 5’7”.

Also, interesting genetic fact - daughters are never taller than their father.

That’s odd because I am taller than my dad. Definitely my dad as we had a DNA test, for reasons to do with my mum.

custardbear · 12/03/2023 07:00

Boys hormones kick in a bit later than girls. I remember in senior school many boys were shorter or similar heights to the girls in the third year (I remember because I changed schools) but their hormones kick in and they shoot up in height

ChickenDried · 12/03/2023 06:55

Then I don’t think it’s unusual. Dd has been 5ft 3in since about 13 years old. She is 19 now. Size 3 feet. I haven’t grown since I was about 13/14. By then I was 5ft 9in. Dbro grew until he was about 17.

Ds (same dad as dd) is 12 and 5ft 2in with size 7 feet and seems to grow all the time. I would very much doubt he has almost reached his full height and would expect him to keep growing.

My dp (not my kids dad) was classed as one of the small ones until he was about 14. He grew to 6ft 4in. Between 14-17.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/03/2023 07:04

I'm taller than my dad. Probably nutrition. (He's 5ft6)
Both our DDs are expected to be taller than DH... he's 5ft8, so a lot shorter than average where as I'm taller than average.

Catspyjamas17 · 12/03/2023 07:18

DD2 was always tall - long when she was born - but still also grew 5 or 6 inches in a year when puberty started in earnest at age 11. It was that fast you could almost see her growing, like a sunflower. She's 5'9"/5'10" now aged 14 and hasn't grown much in the last couple of years, so that might be it now. Size 9 feet, so I'm glad they've stopped, as it is many women's styles only go up at an 8. She still dwarves most of her male classmates, but in the year above there are a lot of taller boys. DD1 is 5'5" aged 17. For a couple of years she was 4'10"/4'11" and her classmates started to tower over her. DD1 and DD2 were the same height for a bit when DD1 was 14 and DD2 was 11.

It's in the range of normal.

I have handful of female friends, acquaintances and colleagues who either they or one of their sisters are 1-2 inches taller than their dads. However one colleague was 5 inches. All their mums where 1-2 inches shorter than their dads.

The exceptions were where the mum was 2+ inches taller then their dad, then the heights vary greatly.

Butchyrestingface · 12/03/2023 07:21

Eh? I'm 5 ft 2 and was that height at age 13. So far, so normal (for females).

Mortimercat · 12/03/2023 07:23

ChickenDried · 11/03/2023 19:15

I think it's the difference I find surprising - literally same height at 13 or him an inch taller - at most and then him hugely taller - by 16 actually- he was around 5ft 9 at 14. I might have expected so be around 3 or 4 inches shorter than him as an adult not 10 inches shorter!!

How do you not know that men are generally taller than women and also that they grow / reach puberty later? 🤨

illiterato · 12/03/2023 07:23

I was a freak- I didn’t stop growing till I was 17. I did hit puberty quite late- bra at 13 ( think DM felt sorry for me tbh as not much to put in it) and period at 14, but seems later than average? Really hoping DD also hits it late as she’s really quite short and could do with a few more years of growth.

First time I had my height measured at the doctor's I was in my early 30s. It had become a thing in England under Nu Labour to have a nurse appointment if you joined a new GP practice where they measured and weighed you.

I only knew my height prior to then because someone in my family had measured me.

liveforsummer · 12/03/2023 07:26

This is all normal and 5'11 isn't massive 😆

liveforsummer · 12/03/2023 07:29

I wasn’t a frequent visitor myself but the doctor must have seen you at least once between 13 and 18 and if you were hardly there definitely would have measured and weighed you**

The dr never measured and weighed me as a teen? Only time was the specific school health check thing. It wasn't standard practice to get weighed and measured when you went about tonsillitis or whatever

Cherryana · 12/03/2023 07:29

I look back at photos from the past and get surprised all the time.
I don’t think it’s unusual op.

Not a freak.

Range of normal.

My sex ed at school covered puberty to stop us worrying we were freaks and any bullying.

That's because it's untrue. It's uncommon but possible for a woman to be taller than her father usually if she has a tall mother. DH's cousin was once the tallest teenager in London (apparently it was a thing) and she is definitely taller than her dad even though he's pretty tall. MIL was the same height as her dad. Don't Bernie Ecclestone's daughters tower above him?

I was told a man couldn't be shorter than his mother but apparently there are exceptions to this too. But have never come across it IRL
