To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

Well - if it's young men who are arriving, then I guess they won't be on the NHS waiting lists.

And we are taking in immigrants through our skills immigration policy so we can fill workforce gaps in the NHS to help tackle the waiting list.

It is important to remember they are Schrodingers immigrants. They come here and live on benefits and take our jobs, are young fit men who clog up the NHS.

It all makes perfect sense.

SoTedious · 12/03/2023 11:28

Well, yes, clearly NHS waiting lists are getting longer and longer. Do you not think there is ANY correlation between that and the growing population of the UK?

Migrants are net contributors. They add more to the economy than they take, so no, there is no causal link between migration and increased NHS waiting lists. It's to do with political choices on where money (including extra money from migration) should be spent.

MOTD viewing figures up lol. Plenty will have just had a look to see what the replacement would be but even so he's maybe not as indispensable as he thinks.

I wonder if he's in talks with TalkTV as we speak.

I think you just answered your own question.

People will have had a look to see what it was like.

BustyLaRoux · 12/03/2023 11:30

MarshaBradyo I don’t think that’s the only thing winding people up. Both sides are guilty.

Some of got quite wound up by my posting a simple link to an explanation of the law around asylum seekers. Some posters have been quite rude about it.

twitter.com/crimlawuk/status/1634330359839031301

At least this morning posters have managed to refrain from calling people illegal.

Oh well I can’t take responsibility for the rest 😬

I’ve only said a few things which have annoyed a poster and been dragged out.

But yeh these threads aren’t the best

carequalworker · 12/03/2023 11:33

@cakeorwine @SoTedious Agree, made this point upthread. The 'ageing' (native born) population is the main issue, besides (lack of) Govt spending and forward planning. I'm an analyst for the CQC, so am pretty confident that immigrants/migrants barely make a dent in the NHS. It doesn't suit some people to hear this though, eh?

Jay Rayner also often tweets on political issues. Why hasn't he been asked to step back from the show he presents?

He hasn't referenced 1930s Germany.
He didn't have a BBC complaint upheld against him only a few months before;
www.bbc.co.uk/contact/ecu/gary-lineker-and-twitter
He's not one of the "BBC’s highest profile stars."
He didn't refuse to delete the tweet when asked...

But the rules must surely apply to everyone. Otherwise it is cherry picking who is allowed to say what.

The truth of the matter is that GL rightly called the government out for fanning the flames of xenophobia and racism, and the government pulled a few strings with its donors at the BBC. Everyone can see it.

SoTedious · 12/03/2023 11:34

Anyone who thinks that last night's 20 min silent version of MOTD would be more popular long term than the usual 80 mins with more football, analysis, commentary and interviews with players and managers is extremely dumb. It was embarrassing for the BBC and they only put it out because of the contract with the premier league.

There will be no presenter and no pundits on today's MOTD. Because others have refused to work in solidarity with Gary Lineker, indicating that many do see him as indispensable!

So no-one to watch as a potential replacement.

But she rightly accused SB of using the word "invasion".

And yet the emphasis in a number of posts across these threads has been on the word 'swarms' - a word Suella Braverman hasn't actually used. In a similar vein, Labour's Paula Sherriff accused Boris Johnson of using the word 'traitor' - a word he hadn't used either.

Yep. Remember this video from the Leave campaign? Why hasn't this come to pass?

Mamamia7962 · 12/03/2023 11:38

SoTedious - Why so rude calling people dumb. There will have been some viewers who loved the new format because they just like watching the football, and others who preferred the old format with the analysis. Neither are dumb.

Apparently not. From the BBC complaint in my link;

Mr Lineker is one of the BBC’s highest profile stars and, although he does not work exclusively for the BBC, is perhaps best known for presenting Match of the Day on BBC One.
In the ECU’s judgement Mr Lineker, though not involved in BBC journalism, therefore falls into the category of those for whom there is an “additional responsibility” as set out in the Guidance.

No it hasn't.

It's words like invasion.
Repeated use of the words "illegal immigrants"

The word "invasion" is not appropriate. Constantly calling people "illegal immigrants" is not appropriate.

And the reference to having the support of "The British people" and "decent, law abiding patriotic British people" - well all I can say is #Notinmyname

Signed

A decent law abiding patriotic British person

Yes but we were talking about the holocaust survivor who confrontedcSB. Now you are just diverting as per.

Dummies falling for the oldest trick in the book - let's all blame the foreigners for making the country worse off - when they actually make us better off and keep many of our most important services going.

Meanwhile the govt chooses to spend our money on making the rich richer instead of providing basic health and social care, education, policing, housing, affordable energy and food etc etc. Absolutely mind blowing that people still fall for this.

itsgettingweird · 12/03/2023 11:44

There was some uproar over that Holocaust survivor getting into the church that evening.

They weren't on the guest list. They got a ticket via other routes and managed to get her in.

Clearly when she talks about the need for better security she should look closer to home!

SoTedious · 12/03/2023 11:45

I didn't call viewers with either preference dumb. But to pretend that football fans will prefer less football and less information about football on MOTD in the longer term is definitely dumb.

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2023 11:45

A human rights group has condemned David Cameron's description of "swarms" of migrants, calling his language "irresponsible, dehumanising" and "extremely inflammatory" as desperate migrants continue to attempt the dangerous journey across the Channel to the UK.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/calais-crisis-live-david-cameron-says-swarm-of-illegal-migrants-will-not-be-offered-safe-haven-10426083.html?amp

Why words like ‘invasion’, ‘swarm’ or ‘influx’ are often used in conjunction with the movement of people.
From Katie Hopkins’ cockroaches analogyy and former PM David Cameron’s ‘swarm’ commentss, to the already infamous ‘invasion’ commentss_ by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, this idea is arguably embedded in how we talk about people moving across borders.

This article also explains the situation across Europe. It highlights the roles of civil war and climate change. This is not just something for the UK. This is a global issue.
