To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

The problem is people drowning in the channel or doing awful things as happened off the coast of Italy isn’t that liked either.

RotundBeagle · 11/03/2023 23:08

Hmm, part of me respects the fact that he doesn't have that 'I'm alright, Jack' attitude that many extremely rich men have, but tbh its not like he has to worry about the increasingly substandard treatment provided by the NHS etc. He can afford the best of the best.

Immigration is absolutely surging and there's no reason to think it'll subside over the next decade or longer.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/03/2023 23:08

Fuck me! It doesn't look like this legostlation will get through parliament nevermind the Courts.

It's just another big fat expensive waste of time and energy.🙄

mumda · 11/03/2023 23:09

How much of the 'industry' in your is coming from tourism. What happens when hotels are full of migrants.
And don't suggest the answer is to move them into real housing. There isn't any: there is such massive demands on housing in the Uk , rents are insanely high.

RotundBeagle · 11/03/2023 23:09

That's said, sending people to Rwanda isn't great either.

How is substandard NHS treatment related to the human rights issues of people on boats? It’s a by product of government policy over the past 13 years.

@RotundBeagle immigration is actually significantly lower than it was 20 years ago. I strongly suggest doing some research rather than assuming the rhetoric patriotic by the government is factual

You really think a massive population increase will help? None will be paying for private health care and many come from cultures with a significantly higher birth rate.

I have genuine sympathy but my own family will always come first. As should people who have spent years paying into the system.

This may have been the kind of thing that Lineker meant when he compared the government to 1930s Germany. The tearing up of carefully thought out international laws introduced in the wake of WW2 is not a good look, especially if you are the country that drafted them.

The international laws you are referring to were put in place in good faith many years ago at a time of turmoil.

But they are no longer fit for purpose. It is apparent that they being abused by illegal immigration, criminal organisations, HR charities, HR lawyers, left wing media and bleeding heart pathetic 'celebrities' for personal advancement and clicks.

Each and every one of the above funded by the British taxpayer

It needs to stop

@LexMitior and the cost of that red meat is high. The deal with France for example - France can only detain people for 90 days, and can’t (in most situations) remove them from France. So Sunak has gifted the French half a billion pounds to only delay - not prevent - crossings.

Half a billion pounds that could have gone into communities here desperately in need, to the NHS, to to support the homeless… but the government would rather spend it on a plan they know would fail (as they’ve done this before, and it hasn’t worked.)

Their desire to sow division to win the election is more important than supporting struggling communities here.

Sorry have I missed something? What is the evidence for the massive population increase? Where is it coming from?

and your solution to rates which are lower now than 20 years ago is to deport lone children and victims of human slavery to Rwanda with no legal assistance or support?

you’re concerned about the impacts of 13 years of Tory policy on your family and your way of addressing that is to support further Tory policy - how does that put your family first?

Don’t suppose you’ve got even a shred of evidence to support that have you?

MrsandProud · 11/03/2023 23:19

why Lord Sugar wasn’t similarly dealt with when he said ‘Vote Tory’ a few years ago?

I've never heard Lord Sugar spouting vitriol or getting into anti-British culture wars. Quite the opposite actually. Don't drag him into this. It's offensive

Where should refugees go?

Turkie has 3.6 million Syrian refugees. Fleeing from Assad.

What do you think should happen to them?

LexMitior · 11/03/2023 23:22

Gosh, it's almost as if the Conservatives did nothing in the last thirteen years but let in cheap labour via legal migration, cut all the systems to deal with crime and the border and then signed themselves out of international agreements that meant they didn't have significant problems with small boats.

Really. If you have high rent and the cost of living and the NHS bothers you, perhaps you might look at who has been asleep at the wheel for the last decade.

Maybe, just maybe, all those agreements, lawyers for criminal Justice, border force, doctors, nurses, all those people who work in the public sector but are just not worth paying for, maybe the British people will join the dots and think they've been had. Because passing a law does absolutely nothing unless you can make it work. And to do that takes time, people and money and not just headlines.

BewareTheLibrarians · 11/03/2023 23:22

“It is apparent that they being abused by […] HR charities, HR lawyers”

Never going to stop being surprised that people think it’s OK to say out loud that they support human rights (ie access to legal advice and support) being removed from a certain group of people.

If I was a better footballer, I’d be pointing out some connotations there.

If he says things that are political, should he be banned?

That's the point - BBC presenters are not supposed to express political views according to some people.

LexMitior · 11/03/2023 23:24

@RotundBeagle - is that a new thing for the UK? You could say that people had been coming here since the 1960s who didn't share our values.

I think that was the line then, and it's yours now. What is the difference?

RotundBeagle · 11/03/2023 23:24

It takes some mental gymnastics to read my post saying I disagree with sending them to Rwanda and then post the above. 😂

Oh yeah definitely no vitriol from Sugar.

just straightforward racism

carequalworker · 11/03/2023 23:25

@RotundBeagle What's the NHS got to do with this? Recent immigrants to the UK barely touch NHS resources, and I can tell you that as fact.

I keep seeing posts like this and on others similar threads claiming it's all fit young (sorry, "fighting age") men coming off the boats, then with no hint of irony claim the same immigrants are overwhelming the NHS. Young. Healthy. Men.
