To wonder what part of this statement reminded Gary L of Nazi Germany?

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 16:55

This is Suella Braverman's statement Gary Lineker was reacting to when he said "This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s" ... twitter.com/GaryLineker/status/1633094764865126400

If she was saying she wanted to stop immigration I could understand GL's reaction. But she's not. I don't understand why anyone would not want to "stop the boats" when 1. they're lethal and 2. they're being run by criminal gangs. If GL had made it clear he wanted to stop the boats but thought this policy was the wrong way to do it, then fine. But he didn't - he just made an extremely inflammatory statement. He might be getting lots of love from some quarters, but personally I think he's an egotist who is playing into the hands of the people smugglers.

You know what's NOT being discussed by the MSM.

The language being used.

It's all about Lineker. Not the language.

Adelant · 11/03/2023 19:19

marmaladeo · 11/03/2023 17:19

It focuses on stopping the boats, not stopping immigration.

I lived in Australia when they introduced a similar policy. It was also controversial, but it stopped (most of) the boats.

You lived in Australia or are you an Australian immigrant to the UK?

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2023 19:22

FurAndFeathers · 11/03/2023 19:17

Correction to your post @marmaladeo

it stopped the boats landing. Not coming.

instead the Australian government sentenced people to death by pushing boats back and hid the data on it.

amp.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/jul/08/un-human-rights-expert-decries-boat-turnbacks-as-australia-criticised-for-secrecy-of-on-water-matters

it’s essentially state-sanctioned genocide towards victims of human trafficking and refugees.

Is that what you're advocating for?

This is now bi partisan with Labor adopting policy.

Outside criticism such as yours what impact has it had on Australia do you think?

In terms of other countries reacting to try and change it, the voting public seem quite happy with it

BitOutOfPractice · 11/03/2023 19:22

Oh the irony of someone trying to say they believe someone’s view is invalid because they are uneducated only being able to come up with “daft twat” to elucidate their point.

PurpleFlower1983 · 11/03/2023 19:22

Creating otherness, dehumanising human beings, us and them rhetoric, protect us etc. It’s exactly how it started. No one saw it coming in Germany.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-

Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—

and there was no one left to speak for me.

How have you got this far through the week still beliving that asylum seekers can be illegal?

Asylum seekers have to declare themselves at the first safe country.... If they are in France they are safe....but they don't want to be in France, they want to be in UK so they illegally cross.... It's not difficult to understand.

They should seek asylum in the first safe place, if they don't they become illegal migrants.

May I just stop you there and ask you to watch this video.

twitter.com/crimlawuk/status/1634330359839031301

It explains the basics of the laws around asylum seeking. An asylum seeker has an absolute right to seek sanctuary in any safe country of thier choice, travelling there by any means with or without documentation.

I guess the answer to my question is that yes, you have indeed got through the week not knowing that asylum seekers can't be illegal. At least now you know.

Anyone who is fine with all these young men from safe countries being put up in hotels is a virtue signalling idiot.
Not only that but they are putting lives in danger and enabling people smugglers.
save your compassion for genuine refugees and not chancers.

What a revolting, inaccurate and offensive comparison to make @@Verylongtime. Using the holocaust for political point scoring is about the lowest thing that can be done. So sick of people minimising the holocaust and appropriating Jewish trauma for lazy political point scoring when it's convenient.

Which safe countries are you referencing?

How do “genuine refugees” claim asylum in the UK?

How do you tell a genuine refugee from a “chancer”?

People are often inherently selfish and especially so when they can castigate, demonise and other, a more vulnerable group who has no voice. There’s no alternate perspective in this debate.

there’s a reason Lord of the flies and Animal farm are classic books. It’s a tale as old as time.

The Australian government has adopted extreme secrecy measures to hide the impacts of its policies.

I expect it will come out in a number of years as a massive scandal and folk will claim they didn’t know.

but quite often ignorance is a self-serving choice. This thread is testament to that.

So you’re blaming victims of human trafficking and slavery for supporting the business of people smugglers/slavers?

really?

weightymatters73 - that is not correct and seems to be a much touted fact. The UK takes very few asylum seekers compared to much of Europe, as mentioned already Turkey takes a huge amount despite the economic climate and now a huge natural disaster. I am not sure why people feel so comfortable with colonialism and yet pulling up the drawbridge? Everything on our terms?

I don’t think it is unknown tbh

But I don’t see international reaction to failure to follow laws?

By that I mean still part of UN, trading well, reputation as doing well generally

you’re wrong you know? Might be worth informing yourself otherwise you look a bit silly.

but let’s assume hypothetically that you’re right (you aren’t - see the video another poster has linked)

is your argument that the UK should only accept French and Irish asylum seekers (so none) and that Turkey should absorb every asylum seeker from the whole of Asia?

out of interest, how do you see that working on a practical level?

Ah ok - so your point is that it doesn’t matter if Australia is killing thousands of people annually, as long as Australians benefit?

Anklespraying · 11/03/2023 19:35

They hand over 20k to enslave themselves voluntarily. I realize they are conned! Stopping the slavers from shipping slaves in is probably the best way forward.

Unless you are a middle class drug user and cheap Uber fan and want an endless supply of people in poverty to run around after you.

willstarttomorrow · 11/03/2023 19:35

@GreekDogRescue- assuming you get your information from talk TV and the Daily Mail. Just because a country is not at war it does not mean certain individuals are not at risk. Quite easy to find that that information online if you have no understanding of history and politics.

Jews everywhere are sick to the very very back teeth of having one of the worst events in history being dragged out by unimaginative gobshites to compare a case that is nothing like Nazi Fucking Germany.

This. 100%

Not this Jew. The language used recently is awful.

Another example of the playbook of dividing people and pitting one group against another.

Do you genuinely believe victims of trafficking knowingly pay to enslave themselves? That the slaver gains informed consent?

is that a behaviour that makes sense to you because I don’t know a single person who would willingly do that and it seems bizarre to me.

could you link to any evidence that support that?

You say international law is being broken, what has happened?

I don’t live there at all how would I know? I assume you’re as capable of researching your own question as I am Confused

Why are you only interested in the consequences for Australia?

What about the illegal deaths of thousands of refugees?
