help me throw a broken fridge magnet away?

Plasticy fridge magnet souvenir from an African trip fell off the frige and it's giraffey leg broke off.

I've glued it before and am now thinking I should throw it away but I can't quite manage it.

It's on the top of the fridge with it's bit. It looks at me accusatorially

Other than reminding me of the trip which is not itself special, it was just a holiday, it holds no sentimental value. It's quite cute looking but I have lots of other magnets from other trips so its no big deal. It wasn't a present or anything

I'm toying between gluing the leg back on, leaving it 3 legged (which actually looks ok at a quick glance because it sort of looks like it's other leg is concealed) or throwing it away.

I know I should bin it but I can't. for no obvious reason.

So I'm not drip feeding I think I do have borderline hoarding tendencies. I'm very much 'keep it in case' in life generally - keep the jam jar/spare ribbon in case type.

I'm very pathetic. What's wrong with me.

Please give me a shove/some good reasons why I should just chuck it out. Help me.

I'd keep it, broken or not. We always bring a fridge magnet him as a souvenir and our collection is a set of wonderful memories. I have a selection of fridge magnet casualties that need repair!

In what other ways do your hoarding tendencies display themselves? I think most of us have a "just in case" collection of some sort (usually in "the drawer" in the kitchen!!) but does the idea of weeding it and throwing stuff away fill you with dread?

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 10/03/2023 20:43

Another fridge magnet fan here!

Perhaps you could have a general de-clutter and it might then become cathartic to include this fridge magnet as part of it.

Personally, I admit I would probably keep it - it's not taking up room if it's stuck on the fridge.

Corrag · 10/03/2023 20:44

It has no particular sentimental value so its time to let go of it. It's obviously bothering you every time you look at it so bin it.

CorpusCallosum · 10/03/2023 20:45

It's broken, put it in the bin.

It'll feed good & might start the ball rolling to get rid of other things that are no longer serving you. You can do it! 🙌

notangelinajolie · 10/03/2023 20:46

No keep it. I think you will regret it.

incognitodorrito · 10/03/2023 20:46

My fridge door is full of broken souvenir magnets. I find those people who don’t have broken fridge magnets have no soul. Put that giraffe back where it belongs !

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 10/03/2023 20:47

Keep it. It has a sweet face! 🤣. Sorry no help at all.

SoGonnaBeAHoarderWhenImOld · 10/03/2023 20:51

You are all no help at all - all you "Keep Its"!!!

Arggh.

Get rid now and congratulate yourself on taking a small stand against your hoarding tendencies.

DuckBushCityLimit · 10/03/2023 20:52

I'm no help because last week I spent a good twenty minutes holding our Crete bull fridge magnet together while the glue dried following a similar incident. Stupid fragile horns!

Wildspace · 10/03/2023 20:52

Don’t delay. Report back when done. Don’t procrastinate over it. Just do it.

LookItsMeAgain · 10/03/2023 20:56

Is it something like this one:

LookItsMeAgain · 10/03/2023 20:58

Or perhaps this one:

thistimelastweek · 10/03/2023 20:59

Seriously. The broken fridge magnet is not improving your quality of life.

In the time you've angsted, you could have chucked the fucker and read three books.

At no point in the future will you think, if only I had a broken fridge magnet this situation will be resolved.

I'm voting lose the magnet.

whatyoulookingfor · 10/03/2023 20:59

Just bin it and forget about it. Honestly in a month you'll have forgotten that you ever owned it

Magenta65 · 10/03/2023 21:01

I’m a sentimental hoarder but Have come to realised this year I can’t keep it all, some things haven’t seen the light of day since I moved almost 5 years ago. Bin it. It’s only a reminder for you and you have the memories/photos. Get rid

mrsbyers · 10/03/2023 21:02

We don’t even have anywhere to put fridge magnets and I’ve kept them all even the broken ones in a tub

AlisonDonut · 10/03/2023 21:05

Can you stick another magnet to the broken bit and just have it slightly at an angle to the original piece.

I once had a large mug of a dog with part of the dog as the handle and the handle came off in the dishwasher. We'd have it on the window ledge and tell each other solemnly that 'dogs die in hot dishwashers' when a moment deserved it.

badg3r · 10/03/2023 21:07

If you can't throw it out, how about keeping it but finding day three other things you can get rid of or decluttering a drawer? Win win (for the Gertrude the giraffe 😉)

OldTinHat · 10/03/2023 21:10

I put broken ones in a tub and keep them. But you could take a photo of it, get it printed and put it on your fridge with another fridge magnet!

CrystalCoco · 10/03/2023 21:11

Do a Marie-Kondo-style hold it in your hands - and see what feels right 🙏
(Does it spark joy?)

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 10/03/2023 21:16

I like the idea of you can keep it and declutter 3 other things OR you can bin it. That way you'll either realise it's not a big deal to get rid of it, or you'll make a teeny dent in your other accumulated gubbins.

My dad and my sister both have hoarderish personalities and it drives me bonkers. I am naturally really untidy and disorganised so it's really important for me to only keep what I love or I'd end up utterly overwhelmed with my own detritus. What's that famous quote? 'Only keep what you know to be useful or believe to be beautiful' or something. Makes a lot of sense!

TheNoodlesIncident · 10/03/2023 21:22

DuckBushCityLimit · 10/03/2023 20:52

I'm no help because last week I spent a good twenty minutes holding our Crete bull fridge magnet together while the glue dried following a similar incident. Stupid fragile horns!

I would take this as a sign I needed to go back to Crete to buy a replacement. You'd be helping the Greek economy, have an unbroken souvenir and get some more time in Crete. Win-win.

@SoGonnaBeAHoarderWhenImOld I would be able to chuck out a broken one if I would be able to replace it but if I couldn't get another it would be harder. But I do feel you should throw it away and move the others to fill the gap.

We're going on a short break to Italy this year and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about fridge magnet opportunities...

damagelina · 10/03/2023 21:23

Throw it away. I am an anti-hoarder, so that's always my answer.

HerRoyalNotness · 10/03/2023 21:24

I had a lizard one from Spain, the tail broke off. I kept it for years. Then someone I knew was going so I asked kindly if they’d get me a replacement and chucked mine. They got one and as they handed it over said their cat had knocked and the tail broke off, that will be $10 thanks. 😆
