School celebrated a Muslim LGBT activist on International Women’s day!

AIBU to be annoyed at the school? I’m baffled as why have the school missed an opportunity here. They already celebrate lgbt history month and then pride in June at school.

Why is this issue that affects a very tiny minority is so heavily influenced in children’s curriculum?

I get what you are saying OP, everyone else is celebrated except white Christian hetrosexual women.

I get you OP.

Could have been a Muslim woman in STEM talking about groundbreaking work she's doing to cure cancer.

Could have a Muslim woman working in construction talking about the sexism she observes.

Could have been a Muslim woman working with charities to eradicate FGM.

Could have been a Muslim mum of a child in school just talking about what is different for her that others might not realise.

But they chose a Muslim woman who is a lesbian activist - presumably the focus on the Lesbian part? Maybe they'll get her in for Pride as well.

Thank you

What is the relevance of her being a Muslim?

I can understand why you might be annoyed about a man who identifies as a woman, or a woman who identifies as a man, or anyone who opposes the rights of natal girls and women to have their own language and single sex spaces, being profiled.

But if she's an actual woman and you're only objecting to her on the grounds that she is a Muslim and a lesbian, I think you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

That is just such crap though.
Why when people who aren't do get celebrated, do some people think that automatically means they aren't celebrated enough themselves anymore?!
It just means more diversity, more celebration!
Which is a good thing, surely?
I don't feel that they're taking away from me being straight, white and Christian, it just seems such a narrow minded view to have.

But what if this causes further trouble on top of what they are already facing.

What if muslim girls in Britain and around the world are pulled further away from schools and education because of this.

So schools shouldn't be able to mention that Muslim lesbians exist to appease homophobes?

Inkpotlover · 09/03/2023 12:14

She could do all those things AND still be a lesbian. Where you actually there for the talk, OP? Do you know what else was said about her or is it just you focusing on her sexuality?

You are aware that she could also be any of those things, she is allowed to work you know, just as she is allowed to volunteer.

Yes
Son told me first Muslim lesbian to lead pride in britain. That was the focus.

Her sexuality was the main focus. She is a lesbian Muslim activist for Muslim lgbt.

This is your 17th post on this thread and the first time you have actually alluded to the topic of her talk. After 16 posts of sounding very angry about the fact that a Muslim lesbian was allowed to talk.

Quite the drip feed.

Well schools are doing quite enough for lgbt community. Which is great.

Why jeapordise Muslim girls' future around the world by sticking to the same agenda even on IWD.

Well, surely, you can see why her sexuality would come up if that was the subject! How else did you expect them to do it. 'This is, erm, we'll call her Jane because otherwise you might think she's Muslim, and she's a famous woman because, ah, she lead an, um, procession for ... something we don't talk about. Isn't that wonderful children?!'

And that's not achievement enough for her inclusion?

Out of interest, OP, are you Muslim too? Or another minority?

MeganTheeScallion · 09/03/2023 12:23

@Threemangoes so talking about lesbian Muslims in a positive way is putting them and other lesbian muslim girls in jeopardy because...??

Why on earth would platforming a Muslim lesbian be jeopardising Muslim girls' future around the world?

FrangipaniBlue · 09/03/2023 12:27

Is it actually wrong to celebrate a woman not on the basis of her sexuality but the difference she has made in the world???

I'm going out a limb here, but as an activist she probably HAS made a difference on the world???? (Hence why they chose her?)

Is the difference to the world only allowed to be for straight Christian's or something? I must've missed that memo......

Yep, as I thought, you weren't even there.
So you have no idea if that was all was focusing on or not.

Agree. This is her Wiki entry. She sounds like an incredible woman who is doing great work with schools. I can't believe any parent of daughters would be aggrieved at her being held up as a positive role model on IWD.

Because lesbian Muslims are not in a crisis!
Jesus!
Lesbian Muslims already get to celebrate themselves in schools for 2 whole months.
I'll tell you who is in a crisis.. Your average Muslim girl and her basic rights to education and safeguarding.

Stunts like these made by school will jepordise the future and safety of women of Afghanistan and rest of the world including Britain.

‘I get what you are saying OP, everyone else is celebrated except white Christian hetrosexual women.’

and we have a full house! DD just did a lesson on Caroline Herschel - white, German-British, probably straight - as I’ve never heard anything to the contrary, woman and given she was born in 1750 I would say probably Christian.

does that appease you? Maya Angelou too - though she wasn’t white, soz. Marie Curie too - though she wasn’t British. Did they have to be British or just white and straight?

Huh?

You think being a lesbian protects Muslim women from the dangers straight Muslim women face? Really?

EmpressaurusOfCats · 09/03/2023 12:35

But lesbians aren’t being focused on all the time. The only letters that really get attention are the T and whatever comes after it.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 09/03/2023 12:36

@Threemangoes ’Stunts like these made by school will jepordise the future and safety of women of Afghanistan and rest of the world including Britain.’

How? You’re going to have to back this up. Celebrating a gay Muslim woman is jeopardise women all over the world? How?

And if so, if you can back that frankly batshit crazy statement up - that a gay muslim woman being discussed in a British school is jeopardising the lives of women in Afghanistan - then what is the alternative?
if you’re Muslim and gay, you keep your mouth shut and your head down like a good girl?? Pretend you don’t exist??

CremeEggQueen · 09/03/2023 12:37

😁 Good point - how are you supposed to mention those achievements without mentioning her sexuality?
It's relevant.
It just comes across like OP is salty as she climbed out of her designated Pride month box
