To call the florist and ask for a fresh bunch of flowers

Ok, more of a WWYD than a AIBU. A friend of mine sent me flowers this morning by ordering online. I've been given a bunch roses, hyacinths and carnations and a few other bits all of which look just on the cusp of being on their last legs. They probably wouldn't sell tomorrow and certainly not the day after . Would you call the florist to complain ? I feel they have ripped him off and disappointed me. That said I dont want to disappoint and let him know that his lovely gesture has fallen flat

Is it the pinky purple big thing in the first pic that is a bit squished? Otherwise they look fine but it’s a bit of a jumble. There are some nice tulips yet to open hiding in there and the visible rose looks fresh enough. I’d just bin anything squished and separate anything cheap-looking (the daffs and the daisy-like things) into different vases when the second bunch arrives and you should be able to get two decent arrangements.

It’s difficult to judge really - from the pics they look fresh enough overall but only you can judge IRL.

This is a floral display I complained about.. paid £50 for this sent to my widowed aunt..... I would have loved for her to have received the bouquet you did!

That is horrendous

I8toys · 08/03/2023 18:52

They look absolutely fine.

That is awful! I was once sent some “flowers” from a local florist. They sent a single amaryllis bulb in a pot!

ididntwanttodoit · 08/03/2023 19:03

I did just that. took photos, complained. can't remember what the outcome was

Gagaandgag · 08/03/2023 19:28

I always ask for extra greenery. So much classier

mdinbc · 08/03/2023 19:31

If people send me flowers, I usually take a photo and send them a thank you. If the flowers aren't what they paid for, they can take it up with the florist. There are some disreputable business that fill a bouquet with cheap fillers when someone has requested more expensive flowers.

I once sent a 'Christmas arrangement' to my SIL and she sent me a photo. It was awful, and I had paid quite a bit. Just sticks and greenery, no flowers at all! I did call and complain and they offered a discount on my next order. Of course I would never use them again!

Escapetofrance · 08/03/2023 19:36

From what I can see in the photo, the flowers look lovely. Perhaps it’s different in real life? I like all the foliage!

Daydreambeliever1 · 08/03/2023 19:47

I think it depends! I always feel large flower delivery companies charge a fortune for very little in terms of flowers. To be honest if I was going to spend less than £20 then I genuinely think most of the supermarkets do decent bunches for that price now. However I don’t think the flowers you have received are in anyway terrible compared to others I’ve seen delivered by large floral delivery companies. As others said without knowing the price it’s hard to accurately say but i as a receiver of these I wouldn’t be disappointed with these flowers unless I knew for example they had cost a £70 for example. Is it a large company? If so could you look online and see if these reflect what they show? I ordered my mum some birthday flowers today from a local florist by telephone and they cost me £30 and to be fair I think they exceeded my expectations! Where as I have ordered before from interflora and paid £80 and been bitterly disappointed!

It's always better to use a florist directly rather than a third party. The florists lose money using the third party but generally need it to stay in business... A successful one I knew was barely pulling minimum wage herself, and yet she had two full-time staff.

Those flowers look fine to me - you can see they're fresh.

Flowers ARE expensive, and you don't get much for the money on the whole. Florists can't compete with supermarket prices...

Peachy2005 · 08/03/2023 20:28

That looks great for £30 incl delivery @Daydreambeliever1

Great idea by @mdinbc I’m going to borrow that in future tx

That’s what I thought! However for £30 I also wouldn’t have also been overly disappointed with what the OP received which is why I’m wondering if the OP knows this was from a very expensive company or that the gifter was prone to spending a high amount on gifts etc… because the flowers OP posted also seem nice but you do get a lot less for your money when using interflora and similar sites I feel, so I’d only be disappointed with the flowers on the OP if I knew they’d cost over £60-70. Without knowing the price I think they look fine too.

Namechangehereandnow · 09/03/2023 13:06

It must be very subjective as @Daydreambeliever1 ’s flowers do nothing for me at all, and I think they’re way overpriced for £30! OP’s flowers look great to me, nothing wrong with them at all.

I spent £75 on flowers for my friends birthday and asked for the biggest bunch of white flowers as they are her fave... so not hard to bulk up. She sent me a lovely text with a pic saying thanks and i nearly fell of my chair. It was tiny and mostly gypsophelia and leaves. £15 worth at best only..3 roses. Its such a bloody gamble.

Did you follow up with the florists and demand a replacement or a refund? Because that's pretty crap of them.

Telibarb · 09/03/2023 18:21

Like others, I suspect, I wish I'd seen the pictures before voting. I voted YANBU but actually Y really ABU: that's a lovely bunch of spring flowers.

celticprincess · 09/03/2023 19:00

My mum received flowers via a florist delivery and didn’t know who had sent them initially. But they were almost dead. She actually rang the florist, explained the situation, that she had been sent them following a family death and was trying to find out who had sent them as well. The florist was really understanding and sent another bunch. She was able to find out who had sent them as well - without breaking gdpr - can’t remember how it came about.

But yes, complain. The sender would be mortified if they knew they’d wasted their money.

Pepsi2001 · 09/03/2023 19:15

Look fine to me x

MakingTheVeganYorkshirePud · 09/03/2023 19:20

Nothing wrong with those flowers at all. Whilst I know you tried to phone them back to make it ok after reading the earlier comments, they are still sending you another bunch, I'd personally feel obliged to give them a glowing review at the least.

LightReader · 09/03/2023 19:34

We sent flowers from a well respected retailer that you will all know because my brother in law's father died. We received a notification that they had been returned and resent. Turned out my sister had complained about them. I thought it very odd that in this situation someone would complain about flowers. Would think they had more important things to deal with. We were not offended but thought it was very odd and a bit disrespectful.

Bluekerfuffle · 09/03/2023 19:47

Is that pink thing a hyacinth? I don’t think it is.

Odalisque · 09/03/2023 20:02

No, it's a stock.

You can change your vote, I did 😅.

I didn't know that! Changed it! Ta!
