Did I just hear Sunak promise to investigate inappropriate and unsafe sex education in school?

I don't really listen to priminister questions, but I was just channel hopping waiting for the kettle to boil

So IABU to dance a little dance?

YABU - no you misheard, he didn't say that/ he said it but it is meaningless

YANBU - yes you heard it, yes it means something, dance away

But I thought you said there was no evidence @jgw1 ? But now you say the government have been ignoring it for years and years? How does that work?

Hobbi · 09/03/2023 17:19

I haven't said I don't want an investigation. Not once. That is a lie. I've repeatedly said an investigation is urgently needed. I have said it shouldn't be conducted along the lines of this latest report and its reactionary agenda anymore than it should be conducted by trans activists. That's all, please don't misrepresent me.

I think you are misinterpreting the term 'evidence based SRE.'

The pp stated they would not be involved in the investigation.

Is that correct?

Your opening posts on this thread were nothing to do with having an opinion that an investigation was urgently required.

You were instead accusing Miriam Cates of stoking culture wars.

This was from your first post on this thread.

Unless of course it isn't happening across the country at all and this is more stoking of culture wars.

Hobbi · 09/03/2023 17:30

Arguments progress, that's in their nature. She is stoking culture wars. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be a review of SRE in schools and an investigation into any substantive allegations of damaging practices. Cates herself seems reluctant for a review to go ahead without her, stating that the actual department responsible shouldn't be involved. I'd say that was a red flag.

Hobbi · 09/03/2023 17:34

@lifeturnsonadime

Nice bit of cherry picking there. I believe I said these allegations were extremely serious UNLESS Cates was stoking culture wars. That's not an accusation, it's a conditional argument. Of course, taking her findings as gospel would not establish whether or not they were substantiated, would it. So we need her out of the picture now so the DfE and Ofsted can investigate.

The government has been ignoring experts for years who want a discussion and investigation into the best ways of ensuring age appropriate sex education that improves the sexual health of young people in the UK.
What there is not evidence of is schools teaching RSE that includes 72 genders and some of the other stranger things that has been suggested.

BCBird · 09/03/2023 17:35

I am.a bit baffled why people would object to organisms being mentioned. I would approach this as sex is meant for mutual.pleasure. There are,as I think we are aware, inappropriate things being discussed

OMG12 · 09/03/2023 17:37

jgw1 · 09/03/2023 17:03

RSE is part of teacher training.

Well there you go, no need for outside agencies. If the training isn’t good enough it needs improving

The safeguarding of children in school is not a culture war.

It's such a lazy argument to shut up debate.

I've look back at your posts. You posted 7 times yesterday accusing Miriam Cates of stoking culture wars and similar. Not once in those 7 posts did you say what was required was an investigation.

Today you have said an investigation was a good idea.

The problem is Hobbi that those of us who have been active throughout this thread remember your posts from yesterday which were very much this shouldn't be considered an issue because there is no evidence (when we all know that there is - it's just not evidence you approve of) and that this is a far right/ christian conspiracy and a culture war.

How does having this view have the best interests of children at heart?

I think you will find that the problem is that the DfE and Ofsted have been captured, probably by left wing hedge fund managers.

Except there is evidence. 100 genders material for schools was on the bloody BBC website FFS.

A school's sex education programme has been suspended because of children being taught about 73 genders on the Isle of Man. The evidence absolutely is there.

May I try an analogy to help you understand.

I am capable of changing a tyre on my car as are most other drivers. I and most drivers when they need a new tyre take the car to the garage so that experts who do it day in day out can do it.

Hobbi · 09/03/2023 17:41

@lifeturnsonadime

I know as much about safeguarding as most people, thank you. Cates during her contribution to Braverman's campaign: "She referred to Brexit, the economy and immigration but said the “culture war” was more important than those issues."
Seems she has form. Hmm. Her own report does not substantiate the claims she makes. Read the report, it's a mess.

cardibach · 09/03/2023 17:42

FourTeaFallOut · 08/03/2023 12:27

Yes he did. Mariam Cates doing sterling work again.

She was talking utter shite as it goes. What she said simply doesn’t happen.

Why is what is happening in the Isle of Man, which is not part of the UK and which has a completely separate education system to the UK, which the UK government is not responsible for, of any relevance to what happens in UK schools?

Surely that is an issue for the Isle of Man, which has competence over its own system.

I have some knowledge of RSE in China and a range of other countries, since it is as relevant to this discussion as what happens on the Isle of Man I might start dropping it in.

Posters are all over the place. I’m trying to get the issues but they are too muddled to be clear.

Rainbowshit · 09/03/2023 17:47

Quite obviously because it was that that @jgw1 was referring to when talking about 72 genders. 🙄

That jgw claimed there was no evidence for. When clearly there is.

Miriam Cates has provided no evidence that would justify and investigation.

That is different from saying that there shouldn't be an investigation into what the best evidence based RSE would look like for UK children.

lifeturnsonadime · 09/03/2023 17:49

The report might be a mess but are you saying that the evidence from schools in it are lies for a far right christian anti abortion agenda?

Are you saying that posters on here are lying about what their children have been taught as fact in school?

Are you saying that you don't believe that transactivist groups haven't got access to children in spite the fact that organisations like Safe Schools Alliance , and posters on these boards, have evidence that they have?

Why are posters repeatedly saying that 70+ genders are not taught in school when the fact that 100 genders is being used in schools is even on the BBC sex education programme?

I mean this thread is bonkers, really bonkers. Denying these things are happening in spite of ALL of the evidence that they are.

Why? What's the agenda for denying all of this?
