To ask if you like the Cockney accent?

I've known my partner since our teenage years but we've only got together as a couple since 2021. I had a crush on him when we were teenagers but he then dated someone else in the group. As I got to know him I grew up love his decent, straightforward personality and I realised his accent was very 'Blimey, Guv'nor!' - but I loved it! In the intervening years his accent hasn't been modified at all - my accent is closer to the generic South East England accent FWIW.

Don’t mind a cockney accent. Probably wouldn’t date someone with a cockney accent though. Love Irish accents and Scottish. Liverpool is the worst. Actually, no. Manchester. Really, really unbearable.
but I also can’t bear it when people “arx” things instead of ask. I just want to say “it’s ask!!! Ask, ask, ask!!!”

And breathe…

FrenchandSaunders · 07/03/2023 20:59

Nope not for me.

I once went on a date with a cockney who lived in Croydon at the time. He said he’d meet me by the Feathered Horse ….. took me ages to realise he meant the Fairfield Halls 😳🤣

OldTinHat · 07/03/2023 21:00

No.

Knowivedonewrong · 07/03/2023 21:00

I'm from South London. Love the accent. Love the Scottish accent too, can't stand the scouse accent.

you might need to adjust your thinking.

I can’t stand scouse either, so insincere! And welsh valleys like Joanna page OMG so annoying! Feels like constantly having your head pecked

StopitSarah · 07/03/2023 21:05

Hello @StaceySolomonSwash I can understand that link, thank you.

It’s still nails down a board to hear people say “arx”. And while it might be technically valid, it’s not for me. Not for the vast majority.

ThePoshUns · 07/03/2023 21:09

I'm not a fan

I'm East End born and bred so naturally I'm a fan of the accent Smile
I do find often when people try to mimic the accent they get it hugely wrong and I definitely don't like that false-cockney accent. For example I've never in my life said "maffs" instead of maths!

Try growing up in the SW and try to have people mimic that one! Even actors can’t get it right!

Genuinely did a bit of a snort there!

I'm sarf lahndan (proper sarf) and I can tell the difference between south/east/north London, Essex and Kent. It's difficult to explain but it tends to be subtle vowel sounds, pitch and intonation.

CeliaNorth · 07/03/2023 21:54

What is an estuary accent? Is it different to cockney?

Estuary is so called because it has spread out along both sides of the Thames Estuary - south Essex and north Kent - displacing the tradtional accents of those areas. Ugly vowel sounds and glottal stops. Often fake, like people who talk 'mockney'. It's not the same as proper old Cockney at all. For an example of proper Cockney, listen to Len Goodman from Strictly. He didn't grow up in the East End, but his family originated there, and he still has the accent.

Yes, I agree. And there used to be different accents and dialects in different parts of Kent - North, mid, East. Probably all dying out as the older generations disappear.

ScrumpyTree · 07/03/2023 21:59

I'm a cockney and I can't stand Scouse accents.

Fully aware my accent gives many people the wrong impression but that's their mistake to make.

I am able to talk 'properly' though.

I feel like most of my cockney friends/family are the same. In business situation/parents evening etc we are using rhyming slang and pronounce our Ts.

My husband think it's hilarious when I'm with my school friends (he isn't a Londoner) and will often comment that we sound like Chas n Dave. (In an affectionate way. I mock his accent too!)

ZeldaB · 07/03/2023 22:06

No, can’t stand it.

Love Irish accents though.

100% agree with the above.* *

I can't describe how I can tell Essex/North Kent accents are different to Cockney.* But even with my accent and family not being annoying to me the Essex accent is. *

Very strange I know!!*

Sez you.

😃

But you are one person. With a potentially racist opinion. But you do you. Have fun.

There are loads of Scottish accents

StopitSarah · 07/03/2023 22:20

@StaceySolomonSwash I’ll keep my opinion. It’s shared by pretty much everyone I know. Of many races. I think “arx” is more an indication of class than race.

You want to live on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent... their are many, what I call London Nan" voices to be heard there! I don't mind the accent but the grammar grates, double negatives and " that's what I done" Also hate haitch for a switch 😝

I do like an old-skool deadpan cockney voice, like the sort you would have heard in The Sweeney 😊

I'd like to add glottal stops to my below list as in

"What's the ma'er wivvya?"

It's not awful but it's not one of my favourite accents. My favourite UK accents are the accents you hear in the Scottish Highlands.
