I've known my partner since our teenage years but we've only got together as a couple since 2021. I had a crush on him when we were teenagers but he then dated someone else in the group. As I got to know him I grew up love his decent, straightforward personality and I realised his accent was very 'Blimey, Guv'nor!' - but I loved it! In the intervening years his accent hasn't been modified at all - my accent is closer to the generic South East England accent FWIW.

Yes. There's a cockney in my office

I think the slang is a load of shit though

GoodChat · 07/03/2023 18:44

I can see why you find it endearing. I think for me I always assume people with cockney accents are proper 'Jack the lads' so I couldn't trust it Grin

Partyandbullshit · 07/03/2023 18:45

I've lived abroad for years now, and I honestly can't understand many regional British accents any more!

I do like Micky Flanagan's though, especially with his vocabulary. Does he speak like that in real life, or does he exaggerate for his stand up shows? Love his cockney gander/walk too, when he's on stage!

WestwardHo1 · 07/03/2023 18:46

The Northern accent is nice.

What's a Northern accent? 😂

I'm not a massive fan of Cockney, but I like the fact that it exists IYSWIM? I find a Geordie accent very sexy actually, and after watching Lady Chatterley's Lover last night am suddenly rather a fan of a Nottinghamshire accent Blush

StaceySt · 07/03/2023 18:46

@Georgyporky - it's interesting when you see for example, repeats of 80s sitcoms like 'Terry and June' - when you see someone in a working class trade profession - the caricaturing of them is hilarious !

I don't like the slang to be fair and know of no one who uses it in real life

My partner's from a council estate with a rough reputation but is the least rough person imaginable Grin - just decent, straightforward (but can look after himself/defend other people)

Leo Woodall is a Londoner putting on an Essex accent for that role. He was incredibly sexy that character, I fell for his charms too.

Right up until the end, at least 😁

ladyforallseasons · 07/03/2023 18:57

Ughhh I hate it. Danny Dyer reminder 🤮

Fabled · 07/03/2023 19:00

I love a proper cockney accent. It’s dying out, though.

Essex isn’t the same. And a lot of young people in London don’t speak like that at all now, bruv/fam Wink.

Campervangirl · 07/03/2023 19:01

I've got a cockney accent but now live in the north.
How many times have I heard
"Get outta ma pub"😂
I hate hearing myself speak especially if I've been recorded.
When I meet new people I turn into the queen mum and sound even worse
"Ho how har you"
Christ I'm a moron 🙄😂

TrishM80 · 07/03/2023 19:07

I can't differentiate cockney, Essex, South London etc, they all sound the same to me. Not a huge fan of that accent mainly because I associate it with spivs and wide boys. Or racist football hooligans. Or people screaming at each other in Eastenders.

Jellykat · 07/03/2023 19:11

I love it, i grew up with a strong Cockney accent (dads family all working class Eastenders) but eventually lost it when my mum moved us to Gloucestershire, and i was badly bullied because of it.
However, at 59 i click straight back if talking to anyone with the accent.
Its great!

SunnieShine · 07/03/2023 19:13

Love it.

SocksAndTheCity · 07/03/2023 19:14

I like it a lot, but I agree that it's rarer and rarer (although I don't know what 'MLE' mentioned by PP means, and I live in East/Central London).

My nails-down-a-blackboard accents are Geordie and any broad Yorkshire, although both are really for reasons linked to actual people and experiences rather than the way anyone speaks.

LargeQuarterPounderwithfries · 07/03/2023 19:19

What a fucking snobby thread.

We are from London. Proper old school
London cockney accents cos we were born and bred there.

It really doesn’t matter how a person speaks . It’s what’s on the inside and to judge a person based on this is proper full on shallow.

Not being outing but my DH has an amazing job and earns a lot. He is a cockney and works with some veh veh posh people in his industry. No one gives a fuck how he sounds as he amazing at what he does and is very well respected.

LiathLuachra · 07/03/2023 19:23

I'm not from the UK and can't differentiate between London accents. I don't like a strong London accent and the Essex accent is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I also dislike the Manchester accent, it sounds like a continuous whine. I love an RP accent and I work in an industry where it's the most common accent. The accent that makes we weak is a Derry accent, pure fanny gallops😁
I once met a beautiful, dark haired Welsh man with a deep voice and the most knee weakening Welsh accent, it was the only time I regreted being married😂

FrownPrincess · 07/03/2023 19:26

Can’t bear it, sorry!

JudgeRudy · 07/03/2023 19:29

Notimeforaname · 07/03/2023 17:49

Yep. Gorgeous accent. Its my second favourite English accent. Liverpool is No.1 😁

It's interesting isn't it how opinion is divided. These 2 would be amongst my least liked accents. We seem to be polar opposites. I'm quite partial to a neutral 'posh' accent.
Just out of interest @Notimeforaname where do you stand on 'foreign' accents. Russian, South African, maybe Australian yes please .... French and Italian 🤢

StaceySolomonSwash · 07/03/2023 19:33

Think it depends where you grew up. To me it's a comforting accent. I have an Estuary English accent normally but I found in business meetings it was better to hide that accent. With friends I'm more relaxed and my true accent comes out. Micky Flanagan in female form! 😂

Robin233 · 07/03/2023 19:33

Totally love it.
Love Georgie accent too.

SnowyPetals · 07/03/2023 18:37

The thing I dislike about the cockney accents (and a few others from close by) is the use of the 'w' sound instead of an "L", as in girl or male. Like their mouth can't be bothered to finish the word!

That's a good way of describing it. Jamie Oliver sounds to me as if he has a speak impediment brought on by a gigantic tongue and a slack jaw.
I still remember my exs Cockley cousin saying she 'was going to Wows'. I thought doescthat mean 'impress', as in Wowzer maybe? She was actually going to Whales! About 5 times she just starts at me and mouthed 'wows'. Afterwards I said to my ex how awkward that was and I wish he had warned me about her disability. I was so shocked that she chose to talk that way. It was as if her jaw was totally slack and too 'heavy' to move!

No I don't like it. The Northern accent is nice.

Northern where? London? Newcastle? Scotland? Lights?

Jamie Oliver doesn't have anything like a cockney accent. Authentic mockney
