I've known my partner since our teenage years but we've only got together as a couple since 2021. I had a crush on him when we were teenagers but he then dated someone else in the group. As I got to know him I grew up love his decent, straightforward personality and I realised his accent was very 'Blimey, Guv'nor!' - but I loved it! In the intervening years his accent hasn't been modified at all - my accent is closer to the generic South East England accent FWIW.

No, I'd never tell anyone to their face, but I hate London and SE England accents. I honestly don't think I could live with anyone who spoke like that; it would drive me nuts. For reference, I'm from NW England, have a Geordie dad, am married to someone also from NW England, and have lived in Scotland for over 25 years. So it's not really an issue.

Turnipworkharder · 07/03/2023 18:09

No don't like it and I was brought up around it but I don't really have the local accent.

davegrohll · 07/03/2023 18:09

This is going to sound so ignorant, but I don't know the difference between an Essex accent and a cockney accent ! Are they not the same ? What is Danny dyers accent ?

I’ve lived in SE London for over 35 years, and it’s rare to hear a Cockney accent now, even in Bermondsey - most under 40s speak MLE. I reckon closer to Cockney in Essex?

Scouse is still my favourite, but more the 60s/70s version than the exaggerated one it has become. Geordie second.

Depends on the bit of bermondsey still, that's where I'm from. Agree about the age cut off generally though, it's a dying accent.

threeplusmum · 07/03/2023 18:10

Hate it, my partner is of English heritage but not born in London and dislikes that dialect.

They do sound very similar to be fair. Danny Dyer's is Cockney. My partner's accent is pretty much identical to Danny Dyer's

Love it - makes even undesirables more attractive. I'm Geordie.

I love the Geordie accent !

He sounds like a mix tbf 😅

CeliaNorth · 07/03/2023 18:12

Proper Cockney, yes. But as a pp said, it's dying out now.
Essex isn't Cockney.
Estuary is awful.

Georgyporky · 07/03/2023 18:19

I'm a Cockney, but my DF told me I should lose the accent if I wanted to get on in the world.
He was right at the time, but it doesn't seem so important now.
I still slip back if I'm with others.

Ah that's interesting - did your DF give a reason as to why he thought that?

My partner was always very popular as a teen - I've always found the accent attractive

No its horrible

DandyMandy · 07/03/2023 18:29

The only English accent I like is the Liverpool one. It's beautiful.

It was true ! The accent was seen as very lower class, & denoting lesser intelligence. Not just Cockney though.
Listening to the radio or the TV & all you heard was "BBC English", unless it was an actor playing a shop-worker, lorry driver, etc.

SnowyPetals · 07/03/2023 18:37

The thing I dislike about the cockney accents (and a few others from close by) is the use of the 'w' sound instead of an "L", as in girl or male. Like their mouth can't be bothered to finish the word!

girlfriend44 · 07/03/2023 18:38

No I don't like it. The Northern accent is nice.

Ooshie · 07/03/2023 18:39

I love the cockney accent. I love all the different accents of the uk, apart from RP really.

MeditatingOnMars · 07/03/2023 18:40

No I don’t like it. The cockneys I’ve known seem to speak very loud though and I think that’s probably more the issue for me.

I might like a more softly spoken cockney accent. 🤔

Theres not many English accents I do like. 😬

I know what you mean - but to my partner it's not girl it's 'gel' (with the w sound you describe Grin)

I'm not a cockney fan but I do love a man with Received Pronunciation.

I think it's lovely! Especially south and north London. I could never actually demonstrate the differences myself but so distinct!

I know he’s an Essex boy but it’s in the same ballpark - anyone who’s seen the second series of White Lotus, Jack’s accent could pretty much remove my clothes through the screen 😬

Leo Woodall is a Londoner putting on an Essex accent for that role. He was incredibly sexy that character, I fell for his charms too.
