For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

Me and my family are hugely impacted every day by the ongoing cladding scandal.

I’m quite tired of being told Covid and Ukraine are to blame for everything.

Just you wait till the US banks start falling soon. Although as we know the 2008 global financial crisis was caused by the UK Labour government, so it's only fair dibs the 2023 one is caused the the UK Tory government.

My Brexit and “Boris” loving parents say they have voted Lib Dem today “because of the state of everything”

As did their neighbour who intended to vote Tory but was sent home to get ID and was so fed up about being tested like a criminal she converted on the way back. 😁

I wonder if there are cracks showing in the Boomer love-in with the Tories. That's the demographic they rely on every time.

Yet the Tories told anyone who'd listen that the global financial crisis was down to Labour. Nothing is ever their fault.

The usual tactic has been to get a demographic that is quite happy to shit on other peoples children. That's pretty much Thatcherism in a nutshell.

The problem now is the Tories have run out of other peoples kids to shit on, and are asking "boomers" (not a helpful term in grown up debates, even though I have it on a chart on my wall so I can talk to the marketing wonks) to shit on their own kids.

It was often said the problem with socialism is you run out of other peoples money to spend. It's less often said, but just as valid that the problem with Tory policies is eventually you run out of folk to shit on. Hence the ongoing obsession with immigrants and refugees.

Law-abiders absolutely deserve human rights and not should have to fear the police. But law-breakers should lose their human rights upon conviction. You can't break the law and then expect to hide behind the law when it suits.

That's not how Human Rights work. They are just the rights you get as a result of being a Human.

Speaking as a boomer (age 60) who has always voted and never voted Tory, I fucking hope so. At the very least it might stop people calling us all Tories.

I won't vote for them but I'll tell you what WOULD make me vote for them, the fact they are the only candidate to come to my house, hand me a leaflet after actually ringing the door bell and telling me how to contact them if I have a problem.

I have heard nothing from Labour or LibDems, not even a circular! I live in a pretty safe Tory seat area, this is where the Labour and LibDem candidates SHOULD be canvassing!

Why would they waste their time in 100% safe seats? The issue there is our shit electoral system.

Im not so sure.
There was some research just after the Brexit vote saying that Tory members would rather see -
Their adult children made jobless.
The break down of peace in NI and
The break up of the UK than cancel Brexit.
Admittedly this was Tory party members not the wider boomer community though.

verdantverdure · 09/05/2023 11:32

The Tory party’s ruinous economic policies, including Brexit.

It’s 2023, and Poland, which is an EU member, and takes many more refugees than us, will be wealthier than Britain by 2030.

in case you thought the Brexit benefits might have materialised by then.

British people will need EU free movement back so we can go and work in Poland for their higher wages and send money back to our poorer homeland.

They've got millions of voters onto voting for Torys with help to buy schemes. In in thinking they are middle class now. It's completely shambles

I wonder if there are cracks showing in the Boomer love-in with the Tories. That's the demographic they rely on every time.

Let’s hope they tire of having their intelligence insulted.

Someone we know in that demographic was recently told by their Tory MP that there would be fewer potholes under a Conservative Government, and under Conservative Councils.

“I can only assume you travelled here today by helicopter” he replied since they were currently living under a Tory govt, in a Tory council and the roads have never been worse.

I think it might finally have tipped him over the edge. He’s asked me to explain how tactical voting works, and how you know how to vote for.

Take up for Help to Buy was less than a quarter of a million. Most of those will be stuck in new build starter homes for years. It’s not the voting incentive Right to Buy was.

The 2008 financial crash was caused by the US sub prime crisis. The financial direction outlined at the time by Labour Chancellor Gordon Brown was viewed as the optimum approach and adopted by many governments across the world.

I worked in financial services at the time and I find your statement so far removed from reality as to be borderline laughable.

You were meant to find it laughable. Sarcasm doesn’t translate very well on the Internet.

More good news thanks to the Tories and Brexit

Although your Bloomberg link says this;
Wages adjusted for price growth are falling by more than 3 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics...
That said, in Italy, things are even worse, with real wages falling at a rate closer to 6 per cent.

It’s 2023, and Poland, which is an EU member

Has inflation at 14.7% and interest rates at 6.75%

September 2022
The number of new mortgage applications in Poland fell by nearly 71% year-on-year in August and their total value by 73%, according to data from the Credit Information Bureau (BIK). The development follows repeated hikes in interest rates in response to Poland’s highest inflation in 25 years.

You can start learning Polish according to verdantverdure.

Mostly what stops me voting Tory is that I wouldn't want people to think I was the kind of person who falls for the obvious lying nonsense they put out.

But if you'll indulge me, we have a guest poster today.

My dad says the reason he won't be voting Tory is that if they can afford £250million for a phone system to divert and deter you from needing a doctor, they can afford NHS pay rises.

AND ALSO (his emphasis) Which Tory crony is getting the £250million contract, eh???? Everything they do is about feathering their own nests.

I must point out that my dad is a formerly Brexit and "Boris" loving more or less lifelong Tory voter. (There's been a bit of UKIP) If you've ever wondered who votes for people like Peter Bone and Desmond Swayne, it's my parents.

Dad voted Lib Dem for the first time in his life last week, and says he will again in the GE "If it will get rid of this useless shower"

I've never been prouder.

Lex345 · 10/05/2023 06:55

The deceitfulness, bare faced lies and whataboutery just makes tories, in their current form at least, unelectable IMO.

Johnson onwards has made our political system into an international caricature of ridiculousness. Politicians should be representing the country as respectable and competent; they have been neither. The complete lack of respect for the priviledge they were elected into and the merry go round approach to ministers. Its like toddlers playing politics.

I would never say I have been a Tory voter, but before Boris, you could at least respect them to a degree. I suppose at least Rishi isn't ridiculous.

The appalling policy during COVID towards care homes, the NHS, the way they are handling strikes, Brexit, the widening class divide, inflation, education- these are the things that will be in my mind when I vote in the GE. Which cannot come soon enough.

Except they're not unelectable. Millions of people will still vote for them in the next GE. I think one reason for this is that so few people actually pay attention to politics, politics is (or should be at least, it's not now) boring. All they see is the newspaper headlines on supermarket shelves and this stuff goes in. This isn't a criticism btw, I have no doubt it drips into me as well, it can't not. Also, people shouldn't have to pay this much attention to politics, we should have honest politicians and the dishonest no where near. And don't get me started on people who want politicians with charisma, I couldn't care less about charisma I want politicians with integrity and competence.
