To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?

For me
The unending shite that is brexit
Corruption and dishonesty, especially during the pandemic but not uniquely. And not just Johnson.
Making already deprived areas compete against each other for levelling up money whilst perfectly affluent tory voting areas are handed it on a plate (looking at Richmond N yorks Rishi ! ). Funny that 80% of constituencies getting levelling up funds are tory...
Whole culture war. Singling out certain minorities to attack for purely political gain. In the 80s single mums, 90s benefit claimants, 2000s refugees, immigrants. FWIW I'm fairly gender critical but disliked the way they toadied round Trump and his abhorrent opinions/followers who pretty much wrote the culture war playbook.
So what stops you from voting for them ?

@Alexandra2001 I've tried the labour version and it was rubbish then; would be clueless now.

Is Labour the only alternative, as you suggest?

Loads of choices of cars... sadly all the choices of parties won't even start.

Am genuinely clueless who to vote for

Alexandra2001 · 28/03/2023 15:42

The point still stands..... if you agree with the previous comments on the Tories performance over the last 13 years, then they cannot be given another 5 years.

Is Labour the only alternative? under out FPTP system, yes they are, other than a coalition.

The UK functioned under the last Labour Govt, it does not now, low bar perhaps but i could rely on an ambulance reaching me in an emergency & i didn't wait days in AE.

also.. its a new team heading Labour... few served in the previous Labour Govt.

Not saying this applies to you... but quite a few posters will say they are floating voters etc but they are nothing of sort, they want the status quo and the best way to get that is to say "they are all the same/all equally useless"

The nhs which is paid for through NI and belongs to the people, privatising it is illegal. Their constant wage rises and expenses, but no money for public sector. Dirty back hand deals with DUP for millions after after saying no money for WASPI pensioners. Wasting tax payers money on benefit fraud (estimated at less than 1%) whilst giving their pals big tax breaks (wtf?), benefit sanctions that left people to suffer and die (that’s a human right atrocity), of course can find the money to bomb poor countries like Syria. Holding Scotland to ransom whilst ‘allowing’ wales and NI to govern themselves financially (maximum devolution). Privatising public transport - except London, of course. Investing in dirty energy that destroys the country, like fracking (their pals of course) instead of renewables. Covid was just beyond ridiculous…….it’s ok for my pal to drive half way across the country cos he couldn’t parent his own kids - oh em I mean had to check his eye sight, so drove …….

anyone who votes for them, needs their head checked imo, I mean the final act was to convince the people not to believe what they see with their own eyes …..

lipstickwoman · 28/03/2023 16:01

That's labours biggest problem. Their leadership.

verdantverdure · 29/03/2023 16:32

Those of you saying you couldn't vote Labour ... What was it about 97-2010 that was so bad? Seeing a GP within two days? Having an NHS dentist? Minimum wage? Highest ever NHS satisfaction levels? Shortest waiting lists? Adequate education for the the 97% of children who don't go to a fee paying school? Sure Start Centres? No shit on our beaches?

This. Also peace in NI.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/03/2023 22:26

@verdantverdure precisely .

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 29/03/2023 22:28

So many reasons but top of the list has to be the existence of Boris Johnson

verdantverdure · 29/03/2023 22:39

Today?

This.

What are the Tories doing to our environment?!

To ask what stops you voting for the tories ?

Sapphire387 · 29/03/2023 23:07

I'm not a sociopath so I don't vote Tory.

They shit on the weak and vulnerable, and in my opinion anyone who votes for them is either selfish, stupid, or both.

MissingMoominMamma · 29/03/2023 23:09

The way they’ve haemorrhaged money on schemes involving mates’ companies. The selling off and running down of the NHS. The lies. The fucking incompetence. Brexit.

Florenz · 29/03/2023 23:22

Labour need to stop defining themselves as "not the Tories" and become a party that is defined by what it is, rather than what it isn't.

SusiePevensie · 29/03/2023 23:31

The last 13 years?

verdantverdure · 29/03/2023 23:46

The last 13 years?

You'd think, wouldn't you?

nocoolnamesleft · 29/03/2023 23:58

The way they are deliberately destroying the NHS.

The way they are deliberately destroying the NHS.

I used to think people who said that were being a bit melodramatic, but there's no denying it now, is there?

Labour need to stop defining themselves as "not the Tories" and become a party that is defined by what it is, rather than what it isn't.

They need to actually start being 'not the Tories' because the longer Starmer has been leader the more they are becoming indistinguishable from Tories with a red tie on.

They're already cheerleading Brexit as hard as the ERG, and they no longer talk about immigration in any context other than it being a 'problem' that needs tackled.

As much as I despise Tories (especially the latest iteration) and would never vote Conservative, Labour appear to be pretty much Tory policy just without the obvious spiteful, hateful motivations, the self-serving corruption, and perhaps with fewer over-promoted buffoons with no regard whatsoever for decency, propriety, or the consequences of being entirely morally bankrupt.

That is obviously preferable to the incumbent shower, but it's hardly a ringing endorsement if all you can really say about the prospect of a Starmer government is 'they'd probably be a bit less corrupt than the Tories'.

grannysmithspips · 30/03/2023 00:44

So many things but one that sticks out is how someone like Nutella Braverman can be in a place of power - she's nasty, she lies, she's thick and she's happy to break the law

Justdontbejudgy · 30/03/2023 00:49

Incompetence, lies, private school clique mentality, wanting to sell every last public commodity to their friends/ own interests, arrogance, playing voters off one another while they laugh all the way to the bank, dog whistle policy making....unfortunately this list is not exhaustive.

They have little choice.

Whether we like ti or not, Brexit is still very popular in the UK and people don't like immigrants.

Labour very much opposes the Governments plans on Rwanda and is nothing like the ERG on relations with the EU but if they wanted a rejoin etc, the Tories would make dammed sure the next GE became another Brexit one and Labour portrayed by the considerable Tory media as anti democratic.

Instead the next GE needs to be about Tory failure, NHS, defence, transport, Green energy, education, inflation and corruption etc etc.

lipstickwoman · 30/03/2023 08:01

I think I must be a bit dim with regard to labour. Labour runs through my mining/car manufacturing genes, and my NHS experience.

Starmer makes me cringe but I try to ignore this, and remind myself it's not him, it's is policies that matter. But all I hear is him disagreeing with EVERYTHING and telling us how it has to change. But nowhere can I see any real indication of HOW he would change.
He seems to have no idea of what to do, just a long list of problems but no suggestions or ideas how to fix them. So now every time he speaks I just want to shout 'Oh for Gods sake shut up moaning' and turn him off.

He doesn't demonstrate any leadership. He just whines. I don't want to constantly tell me what's wrong, I can work that out thanks. Just tell me how you'd change it.

gloov · 30/03/2023 08:11

I agree.
Brexit is still much loved despite (I'm increasingly thinking BECAUSE) the very obvious pain it's causing the country. And, the voter doesn't like immigrants and makes that very, very clear.

Kendodd · 30/03/2023 08:53

lipstickwoman · 28/03/2023 13:58

I agree with almost all these reasons but still don't see an alternative

What are you talking about? There's loads of alternatives, even just staying home and not voting is an alternative.

lipstickwoman · 30/03/2023 09:55

@Kendodd I'm talking about a credible alternative party, but yes I agree not voting at all is an option.
