It's fucked isn't it......I'm so sick of life.

Two steps forward and one step back.

The smell is unreal!!!!

It sounds as if your daughter may have encouraged the cat in? If it was shut in it may well have been extremely stressed, hence the peeing, make sure she knows that the cat is not allowed in the house as a first step.
If the cat wasn't encouraged in, then a decent cat owner would pay for any cleaning needed.
Your sofa will be fine, as others have said wash gently with diluted biological washing powder which destroys the urine enzymes and rinse, a bit of saddle soap or something like renapur will restore the leather when dry.

Owners are responsible for
‘severe’ damage which includes
damage to property

www.thecatgroup.org.uk/pdfs/Cats-law-web.pdf

It isn't true that cat owners are completely free of responsibility for their cats behaviour/actions.

Andypandy799 · 06/03/2023 13:56

@Whatthefnow do you have contents insurance?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/03/2023 17:39

Several people, myself included, have advised you to call you house insurers - have you tried that yet?

Choconut · 06/03/2023 17:45

Unless they're going to chase the neighbour for payment I wouldn't claim on house insurance, all it will do is put the premiums up next year and you'll have to pay the excess anyway.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/03/2023 18:19

My insurer happily paid up. I did pay an excess - but £100 was worth the £1000 brand new mattress I got to replace mine which had been trashed by an incontinent cat!

It didn't put my home insurance policy up either...

HufflePuffllePuff · 06/03/2023 18:51

I don't get this. If my cat had peed on my neighbours sofa, I'd want to know and would definitely try to remedy it by cleaning it myself or least paying for the products or a new sofa cover and cushion. I'd be mortified. Of course you should be able to leave your doors and windows open without fear of someone's else pet getting in and damaging your property!

You should at least tell them OP.

Can you ask if anyone has a spot wash machine you can borrow. Like a Vax. It's really good on upholstery. Neighbour might even have one. It may take a few goes on the cushion with cat pee products and also you'll might be able to wash the fixed parts of the sofa with it.

Nope, i'd never be able to sit on that couch again. Neighbours should be paying for cleaning/replacing, not sure how you'd enforce that though.

How ridiculous.

Think yourself lucky. My neighbour pissed on mine!

Same here. Didn't know until I sat in it.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 06/03/2023 19:02

For it to stink that much it must be an unspayed tom or have a bladder infection! If it is an unspayed tom your neighbours are knobs for that fact alone.

LakieLady · 06/03/2023 19:19

Does cat pee smell worse than dog pee?

Having raised 3 dogs from puppyhood, my carpets have had a fair few puppy pisses on them, and when one of the dogs got old, he used to sometimes piss up one of the sofas (we think he might have had dementia). Enzyme pet pee cleaner got rid of the smell really easily.

Not if it's a healthy, spayed cat it shouldn't.

Hankunamatata · 06/03/2023 19:52

You need enzyme cleaner

QuinkWashable · 06/03/2023 20:04

Pour bicarbonate soda (baking powder) all over it, that’ll absorb the smell

Nope, it won't - bicarb doesn't work for cat wee, you need vinegar, but the enzyme stuff is the best - just don't be shy, absolutely soak it.

Dillydollydingdong · 05/03/2023 22:15

Sorry but legally the neighbour isn't liable for the misdeeds of her cat. Cats are deemed to be out of human control. If it had been a dog that would be a different matter.

Humans shouldn’t be able to decide to keep them as domestic pets and inflict their shitting, pissing and wildlife destroying habits on their neighbours then.

HappinessDragon · 06/03/2023 22:13

Boiling water with biological washing powder dissolved into it plus distilled white vinegar.
Scrub the cushions thoroughly with the mixture.
Make some more mixture up into a spray bottle.
Let the cushions dry and then if there is any residual smell, spray, brush thoroughly, dry.

I’ve cleaned many a dog or cat accident over the years!
Good luck!

Completely agree. It's utter bullshit that in the 21st century we still allow domesticated cats to freely roam, kill birds, kill wildlife, shit in private gardens, enter homes, caterwaul and otherwise make nuisances of themselves.

I say that as a cat lover. They are human-created animals, not wildlife, and their human owners must be held accountable.

Helenahandkart · 06/03/2023 22:46

Be really careful about using any enzymatic cleaners on the upholstery, or any cleaners at all. I bought one that said it was safe to use but it reacted with sunlight over several months and eventually bleached big marks in my carpet.

We had a stray cat break in to our house and piss/spray everywhere. The smell did fade completely after a little while, so don’t panic.
