My neighbours cat has pissed on my couch

It's fucked isn't it......I'm so sick of life.

Two steps forward and one step back.

The smell is unreal!!!!

I would cry too OP. I have just paid 2 grand for a velvet chesterfield and the thought of it being peed on by a cat is heartbreaking as I can't imagine the smell ever going since covers aren't removable and scrubbing would ruin it. I want to like cars but it's hard when they seem so destructive.

Purplebunnie · 05/03/2023 23:06

Stray tom cat got into my house and sprayed the side of my sofa. I sprayed with Febreeze - did the trick

Purplebunnie · 05/03/2023 23:06

The sofa not the cat 😂

Sorry but legally the neighbour isn't liable for the misdeeds of her cat. Cats are deemed to be out of human control. If it had been a dog that would be a different matter.

This is why everyone hates cat owners. They take no fucking responsibility.

Urine-Off Cat Kitten Odour Stain Remover 500ml Spray amzn.eu/d/g3BDGlG

This is even better than the Simple Solution stuff linked above.

Lavender14 · 05/03/2023 23:11

Hi op, as a cat owner it's not ruined don't worry. Soak up as much of the pee as you can while it's wet. If it's not wet now then wet it with water and a tiny bit of dish soap and blot as much of it out as you can with towels. Then make your way to your local pet store and get some cat urine cleaner. It neutralises the enzyme that makes it stink so bad. Pour it over the sofa where the cat peed. (Hopefully it's on one cushion or something easy lifted off. You need to really soak it so it gets as far in as the pee did so cover a bigger area than you think you need to. It will kill the smell. I'd try a wee bit somewhere not obvious first- I have never tried it for colour fastness on the carpet and it's been grand but just incase). It does the trick for my cat- he's old and gets confused about the toilet sometimes.

It's one of those situations where noone really is at fault. The neighbours can't keep their cat indoors all the time and to be fair your daughter chasing it out could have scared it and caused it to wee. Equally op is not at fault for leaving a door or window open. It's just one of those things.

mycatisaloveabledemon · 05/03/2023 23:13

Think I've been misread by 2 people on this thread

I chose to keep my cat as a house cat. I also chose to build a catio because I had space. (Which solves it for those who think they should get to go outside)

If more cat owners weren't weirdly in this country under the impression that it's cruel to keep cats as house cats- less people would hate cats.

Marzipangirl3 · 05/03/2023 23:17

I’d feel the same OP. For those saying their cats have pissed all over the house, you’ve chosen to buy a cat knowing it will possibly do this, OP didn’t. It’s the same as neighbours cats shitting all over your lawn - if you’re cool with it as a cat owner, that’s your choice but no one else wants to pick up your cat’s shit. I couldn’t imagine, as a dog owner, my dog going into someone else’s house and peeing on their furniture. I’d be mortified and buy them a new piece of furniture. The law might say it’s not the cat owner’s responsibility but I think you’ve got to question someone’s morals if they don’t think it’s wrong that they own a pet that is such a nuisance!

Whatthefnow · 05/03/2023 23:22

I can still smell it, it must have run down the back of the cushions and I can't get to it.

I'm going to order every suggestion from Amazon and spray the shit out of it.....the irony.

I'm so mad!

It's a nice little cat, normally comes into the garden but today pushed it's luck and came all the way in.

My daughter is familiar with the cat so didn't chase it out just tried to encourage it.

Not my neighbours fault of course and I won't mention it.

I absolutely cannot afford a replacement three piece suite.

I'm on my knees with the cost of living.

I'm so fed up and cried my eyes out over this as I'm trying to put my house back together after my ex partner absolutely ruined it by starting jobs and never finishing them 😭😭

My cat pissed on my bed, the smell was horrendous. I paid for a professional clean with a machine and it came out, so all is not lost. The Simple Solution others have recommended also works, so try that first.

Octopusmittens · 05/03/2023 23:26

AlmostAJillSandwich · 05/03/2023 21:40

Nope, i'd never be able to sit on that couch again. Neighbours should be paying for cleaning/replacing, not sure how you'd enforce that though.

Blimey over dramatic

Allblackeverythingalways · 05/03/2023 23:34

GodSaveTheClean · 05/03/2023 22:51

I don’t like cats, but even I can see this is a silly suggestion.
Cats aren’t biddable animals!
Personally I’d want to squirt the damn animal with water if it came back, but that’s probably not ok!

It's absolutely fine to spray them.
If they are in your space, they need to be taught it's not comfortable being there.
I don't buy into the "Oh it's cruel" crap.
Up thread someone said a cat pissed on her BABY. They need to learn that they aren't welcome.

averylongtimeago · 05/03/2023 23:34

If it's a leather sofa, can you get at it from underneath? If you turn ours over, you can see the underneath of the cushion?
Then soak the foam with the pet urine remover stuff. It's worth a try at least.

scoobydoo1971 · 05/03/2023 23:38

With four adopted cats, there has been the odd accident. The best solution is white vinegar soaked in. Does not smell as strongly as the stuff you throw on fish and chips. Works wonders.

Jenpeg · 05/03/2023 23:47

I agree it's noones fault as such, except for maybe the cat 🙈 cat owners cant control their cats however if someone told me about a situation my cat had caused I'd think thats absolutely fair and I would do my best to remedy it, I can't really stop him going in open doors and I can't police it from my side but I'd fully encourage anyone to give my cat a wee water spray or chase him, put the shits up him a bit etc to keep him away, I'd maybe keep an eye out and screech at him if I saw him hanging around that neighbours, I'd do my best, I'd want to know. My cat is a bit of a dick tho and would probably trash their house or kill them and make it look like an accident. Cat urine is horrendous but we've got it out years ago with biological washing powder, I assume the sprays are similar enzymes, but be really careful with leather. This would have made me cry too, I totally get it Good for you for doing the house, you'll get there!!!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 05/03/2023 23:53

NewShoes · 05/03/2023 22:05

The neighbours absolutely should not pay for it - you’re the one who left your door open for animals to wander in!

Their animal should not have been on her property!!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 05/03/2023 23:56

mycatisaloveabledemon · 05/03/2023 22:54

They aren't biddable animals but I honestly don't understand why some people are against house cats. It's far safer for them, less dangerous to the other wildlife and you don't have to have them annoying anybody but you.

I had one for 18.5 years. He had excellent quality of life and didn't destroy anyone else's property.

Salome61 · 06/03/2023 00:00

So sorry to read this. Our neighbour's quite neglected unneutered tom cat came into our house and sprayed everywhere, the smell is unreal. The last straw for us was when he p'd on my husband's pillow. I insisted she have him neutered and she finally agreed. I paid for him to be neutered and ended up taking him in the end and looked after him after the op, she hadn't even missed him when I released him a few day's later.

Try a mild solution of biological washing powder, it breaks down the fats and does work.

Your a cat owner aren't yet?

You should be able to leave your door open without cats coming in. It being your property and cats being an utter nuisance which should be kept indoors only.

Whatthefnow · 06/03/2023 00:10

What do I do with the biological powder? Am I sprinkling it on or adding water to it and spraying?

I don't think I'll ever finish the house.

Unless you had a cat cam on him 24/7 there's no way you could actually know this definitively

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 06/03/2023 00:20

Cat will try to return and keep peeing in the same places if he can, everyone will need to be extra vigilant for awhile.

OldSkoolLikeHappyShopper · 06/03/2023 00:23

My neighbour’s cat shat on my kitchen table. Diarrhoea.

I now have a microchip catflap.

Stopthebusplease · 06/03/2023 00:25

I hope that the OP isn't getting the same pop up ads as I've had throughout reading this thread, that would really add insult to injury - The pictures are of cats with the text 'Cats wearing hats'! 'Scuse the pun, but if I were the OP seeing them, it would really piss me off!🙀

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 06/03/2023 00:28

NewShoes · 05/03/2023 22:05

The neighbours absolutely should not pay for it - you’re the one who left your door open for animals to wander in!

So the OP should never ever have the door to her house open for any extended period of time? Even on a hot like some of the heatwaves we had last summer? That’s just ridiculous.

The OP’s neighbours made the choice to on a cat so they should be paying for the damage.
