You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

Yeah I’d be hungry by 6-7 no matter what I’d eaten! But not for a massive meal - just something light like sandwiches, cheese and crackers.

I actually prefer a main meal at lunch as I eat less overall.

Roselilly36 · 05/03/2023 18:11

Yes definitely too long to go without food from 2pm till breakfast.

@Roselilly36

why?? What do you think will happen?

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 05/03/2023 18:13

@Coffeellama because for us Sunday lunch is a later lunch than we would normally have so I wouldn't be hungry enough for another meal at dinner time/early evening. Hence the smaller plate later evening.

Also… some women must literally spend their lives in the kitchen and cooking if some people think it’s normal to cook a full on toast at lunch and then cook another full on meal for dinner later on.
whyyyy?!
life is too short

What do you mean by full-on meal? I think a lot of the things being mentioned as quick snacks are things that would fit the brief of small meal for me, and are mostly every-man-for-himself type things — cheese on toast, bowl of cereal, cheese/pate and crackers/oatcakes, some cold pasta salad, poached eggs on toast, sandwiches, roast dinner leftovers… all perfectly respectable small meals in my book if eaten at a mealtime (cereal's maybe a bit of a stretch, but it counts as a meal at breakfast so why not). I don't think it's normal to expect two full cooked main meals in a day.

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 05/03/2023 18:13

I hate huge meals at lunchtime. It throws me off for the whole day. Would much rather have a sandwich or salad at 1pm and then the roast at 7pm, as usual.

Lemonademoney · 05/03/2023 18:13

We love a big roast on a Sunday lunch with all the trimmings (totally eat more than a normal meal - it’s a roast!) I always make a pudding too, usually something like a crumble or a jammy sponge with custard and we have that for tea with a sandwich or something for the kids (Dh and I literally just have whatever the pudding is)

Choconut · 05/03/2023 18:14

Uuurgggh I hate having meals that aren't at a meal time so you don't know whether to eat another meal or not. I'd probably just have a crumpet or some fruit.

BertHandsome · 05/03/2023 18:14

In my experience the bread with a meal, especially a sloppy meal like a roast is a poor thing. Bread fills you up, meaning you need to eat less expensive “meal”. It was in our house anyway but there are certain things I find strange eating with no bread now.

TattyDevine · 05/03/2023 18:15

I'd want something, but not a "meal" that had to have meat.

My mother always does this thing where she's saying "I couldn't POSSIBLY think about eating" just because she's had a roast. But if I want some thing I'm a glutton, even if I ate a third of what she had during the roast dinner (which is usual) and 8 hours has passed.

Then I'll have a little something and she will eat double of the thing I've chosen and say "ooh I feel DISGUSTING now, I told you we didn't need anything" 🤨

I'm 45 year old don't tell me anything at all you irritating hypocritical shrew.

coffeepleeease · 05/03/2023 18:16

I wouldn't eat because I felt like I "should" have an evening meal, but if I was hungry in the evening I'd probably have some toast or cereal

cryinginhmart · 05/03/2023 18:16

Yeah, I’d want something smallish like toast or some leftovers. Also the bread isn’t something that’s ever happened in my house (nor are roasts really) but it sounds amazing! I find all this “indulging is not enjoyable” stuff absolute bollocks. If I was blessed with a brain that would let me eat food I wanted without immense guilt you bet I would be having bread. As it stands I don’t feel the need to chastise others on their food choices.

Allschoolsareartschools · 05/03/2023 18:16

I'd say yes but it would depend if I was hungry or not.

Hungry = snack like toast, sandwiches, hot cross bun etc

Not Hungry = just tea & bed.

BabychamGlass · 05/03/2023 18:16

I'd have a bit of it all again at about 8pm, but without the gravy, and in between two slices of bread.

simbobs · 05/03/2023 18:16

I had a roast dinner at around 2pm and will want to eat again later. No bread, though (never heard of that) nor do I have Yorkshire pudding with pork. DH would happily have it with any meat but he wasn't cooking. Not making a big meal, just reheating some soup made yesterday, with bread and cheese.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:17

maddiemookins16mum · 05/03/2023 17:54

We had a big dinner at 2pm, we’re off to Church tonight and have a choir practice after too so won’t be home until after 9pm. I’ve got some hot cross buns for us to eat then with a brew. Otherwise I’d be going over 18 hours without something to eat.

@maddiemookins16mum

whats do bad about that?

Snack and cup of tea early evening.

FlamingoCroquet · 05/03/2023 18:19

I'd have a boiled egg and toast - my go-to light supper if I've had a big lunch (rare).

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:19

I really think a lot of people on mumsnet eat cos they think they SHOULD rather than cos they need to or are actually hungry

it’s like they think they will perish if they miss a meal or something lol 😂

GuyFawkesDay · 05/03/2023 18:19

I'd want a bit of a snack type meal. So maybe couple of slices of toast, or cheese and biscuits etc in the evening.

Hayliebells · 05/03/2023 18:19

I’d definitely have a toastie/cheese and crackers/pate on toast/soup. Just what I’d have for lunch, but in the evening instead.

AuntieMarys · 05/03/2023 18:20

No.
I'd next eat at breakfast.

TheChosenTwo · 05/03/2023 18:20

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 17:55

@TheChosenTwo

Let them expect! Sounds a huge meal based on what OP describes

It seems from most of the responses that it’s quite normal for them to want another meal! I personally only ever eat one ‘proper meal’ a day, I didn’t think that was so abnormal.
I don’t eat breakfast, maybe a yoghurt and fruit midmorning, a snack in the afternoon (could be anything from toast to crisps or more fruit) and then a hot meal at night.
I’m not a competitive under eater, I may have more snacks some days but I hate cooking and am incredibly lazy about it so tend to just have something very quick and easy during the daytime and dh cooks in the evenings.
As I said, it’s rare that we’d have a roast in the middle of the day, only ever if invited out somewhere, but then I’d not eat again in the evening. maybe 3 times a year, we usually host here if we are meeting people and we’d compromise and have a main meal about 4 or 5. We don’t normally eat out roast until 7/8 if just us.
Oh, and dh is a big fan of finding some bread and mopping up gravy!

cryinginhmart · 05/03/2023 18:20

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:13

@Roselilly36

why?? What do you think will happen?

Presumably they’ll get hungry or feel light headed because they aren’t used to that, their metabolism is different, any number of reasons including the fact that they might just not want to go that long without food.

dextrek · 05/03/2023 18:20

Yes, absolutely! This is how it was when I was a kid - my mum would do the roast around 1-2pm, and then we would always have "Sunday tea" around 6pm, which would be ham sandwiches, scones and home made cake.
Now, I do our roast at normal teatime (so any time between 5 and 7) so we obviously don't need to eat again after this, but then again we do have something earlier in the day - so it's swings and roundabouts.
