You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

Probably just a slice of toast or a yogurt in the evening.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:04

Also… some women must literally spend their lives in the kitchen and cooking if some people think it’s normal to cook a full on toast at lunch and then cook another full on meal for dinner later on.
whyyyy?!

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 05/03/2023 18:04

bread to dip ect.

Sorry, what? This is a roast dinner, not egg, chips and beans Confused

But yes, I'd eat something small later if I ate at 2.

WimbyAce · 05/03/2023 18:05

I would have a bit of tea in the evening, bread, cake etc.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:05

Plasmodesmata · 05/03/2023 17:56

yes but not another big meal. I'd have cheese.

@Plasmodesmata

what…?! Just like a chunk of cheese??

TheIsaacs · 05/03/2023 18:05

I’d probably have something small like I would have for lunch usually. I wouldn’t skip lunch if I was having a roast dinner in the evening so why would I skip a meal just cos I’d eaten earlier in the day?

Vermin · 05/03/2023 18:06

Yes. But Rate my Plate roast dinner photos have been an absolute education about what people consider to be a meal. So if the roast you’re talking about is one that has no remaining visible plate under it and is piled inches high, then no - maybe a Rennie and a cold glass of water.

Quent · 05/03/2023 18:06

Would people seriously eat at 2 in the afternoon and then fast until breakfast the next day? Christ, I would never. If I've had a bigger lunch, I'd skip snacks and I might have something smaller for dinner, but I don't like to skip meals.

Also, a slice of brown bread to soak up the last of the roast-dinner-infused gravy is the perfect way to finish a roast. Better than pudding.

I don't think anyone on this thread has said they'd cook another meal in the evening have they? That's why we're all have cheese and crackers, it's size and ease of prep over calorie count.

Funkyslippers · 05/03/2023 18:07

Definitely. I'd have some cake at around 4pm then a sandwich around 8pm

Laiste · 05/03/2023 18:08

Lots of cheese and crackers being eaten as well as crumpets. Quite a few mentions of pate.

It wasn't the point of the thread, but it's interesting how many of us are eating the same things.

I don't over eat at any meals now, like to have a medium sized breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes I'll reheat my leftovers from lunch for dinner, or have something a bit lighter if I'm not very hungry. I'd at least want a salad, soup or cheese/ egg on toast type thing or would be too hungry to sleep/ wake up early the next morning hungry.

Jellybean23 · 05/03/2023 18:08

Even on Christmas day, we eat again in the evening. And we aren't greedy people, just average eaters. My son would be horrified at the thought of lasting out until next day.

I was going to say the same, everyone is saying snacks or what they would usually have for a light lunch.

I'm pretty sure most replies have described snacks that barely need any prep or cooking
Cheese and biscuits
Toast
Crumpets
Bread and pate
Etc.
My DH cooks majority of our roast dinners, he spends way longer pottering about and drinking wine in the kitchen than I do!

Pallisers · 05/03/2023 18:08

Yes, we'd have cheese on toast or bread and butter or beans on toast maybe. I wouldn't do another dinner but would definitely eat something.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 05/03/2023 18:09

I'd want something light in the evening, not necessarily because I'd be overly hungry in the evening but because I'd wake up overnight absolutely starving

evtheria · 05/03/2023 18:09

CatNoBag · 05/03/2023 17:55

I wouldn't, and if I did possibly some basic toast and jam/pate/cheese. My DH would think and say he doesn't need anything, then around 8pm he'd be ravenous so we both end up eating again. He's stick thin, I'm podgy.

That's my DP. "Let's not bother making any tea, I won't want anything after this." Me: su-u-ure Hmm

7pm: <noises of cupboard doors and drawers being opened and closed in the kitchen>

ThereIbledit · 05/03/2023 18:10

I'd want soup in the evening. And now I want heinz tomato soup with cheese toasties.

Ponoka7 · 05/03/2023 18:11

We'd usually have a proper late pudding, such as bread and butter pudding with custard.

toomuchlaundry · 05/03/2023 18:11

@LuckySantangelo35 why would it have to be the woman in the kitchen, DH is the King of roast dinners in this house.

The comments about it being a northern thing with bread and gravy, my parents come from Yorkshire and it was more a thing to have the Yorkshire pudding first covered in gravy, and then have the meat and veg.

If I have any surplus gravy on my plate at the end of the meal I just get a spoon and clean it up that way.

Roselilly36 · 05/03/2023 18:11

Yes definitely too long to go without food from 2pm till breakfast.

CountryParsonPetal · 05/03/2023 18:11

I'd definitely want a small something later in the evening. Maybe soup or salad or toast or if there was a dessert after the roast I'd save it for the evening.

Mueslikid · 05/03/2023 18:11

I’m very happy not eating again after a big meal at lunchtime - especially if it was as late as 2pm. I’d probably get to fairly late evening before I felt hungry, and then I probably wouldn’t bother if it was up to me.

DC would want something though - probably they’d make themselves sandwiches. DH might eat sandwiches with them, in which case I wouldn’t have anything else - or he might start preparing crackers and cheese and olives late in the evening, in which case I would certainly join in.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/03/2023 18:12

BentleyRhythmAce · 05/03/2023 17:27

I'd want to eat, and I would eat. Otherwise you're potentially going, what, 18 hours without eating - for me that's too long.

The teeny tinies will be on saying they wouldn't eat for a week after a roast, and that anyone who would is grotesque and the reason the NHS is in a state. But they can fuck off.

@BentleyRhythmAce

if you didn’t feel hungry why would it be too long though?
