You've had a roast dinner at 2pm. Would you want to eat again before bed?

Big roast with all the trimmings - pork with crackling, 3 veg, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, gravy, bread to dip ect.

Would you want anything before bed, apart from a cup or tea or two?

YABU - yes i'd want/need to eat again.
YANBU - nope, that would do me for the rest of the day.

When people say they have something small like cheese, what do they mean? A chunk of cheddar cheese? A slice of Emmental cheese? On its own?!

Just a wheel of Brie and a baguette

ohyouknowwhatshername · 05/03/2023 21:45

I'd have a packet of crisps and 3 squares of chocolate at 8:35pm.

MaryShelley1818 · 05/03/2023 21:46

Not a roast but we had a large Full English breakfast at about 1.30pm after swimming. Me, DH, DS5 and DD2 all had crumpets and cereal, and the children had cucumber and fromage frais too at about 6.30pm.

TolkiensFallow · 05/03/2023 21:50

Yes I would have something light later. Egg on toast or if I felt filthy, a bacon sarnie!

jelly79 · 05/03/2023 21:53

Had our roast at 4pm today. It as hungry about 9 but didn't eat

Everyonesinvited · 05/03/2023 21:56

There's something sickening about the idea of feeding so heavily at one meal that you don't need to eat again.

I would eat enough to feel satisfied at midday, probably a little more truth be told but not much as the after effects of over eating are awful, then would satisfy my hunger in the evening.

Gosh if I'd had a big roast at 2pm today, I probably couldn't eat again til at least Easter, probably Christmas...

You’d eat again Christmas!2024 Christmas surely?Owt else is sheer piggery gluttony on an industrial scale
After such a meal I’d Maybe inhale some mineral water or stare at a pomegranate If I got hungry
Cant believe anyone would eat agin until oh 2025. No wonder we are in grip of an over eating epidemic and need hydraulic chairs in nursery for all the wobbly children

slithytoveisascientist · 05/03/2023 22:12

@Reddahlias nope I can eat three meals a day thanks and if I can I have five. Not sure why you are saying it's a large lunch, you may choose to stuff yourself but I don't, and can't. Calories don't come into it.

I would probably have 4-6 thin slices of different cheeses, crackers and maybe some pickles or chutney.

I always have plenty of cheese in. I'm diabetic so don't eat lovely stuff like crisps, bread in my gravy, Yorkshire puds or potatoes so cheese is my luxury!

At the end of dinner - slice of white bread plonked onto plate and a bit more gravy poured on and spread around and press it to soak it up and ... yum 😄

Oh yes - this is my childhood and i loved 'moping up' the gravy etc.

My parents served bread with everything along with our dinner - probably because it was affordable. Also my Mum wouldn't have wanted to waste anything (my Dad used to also like to drink the vegetable water - Gross!). We also used to have yorkshire puddings for dessert (afters) with jam or golden syrup in.

I loved it and still would but, for some reason i don't do it, I'm going to try next week for my kids as they would probably love it like i used to.

EightChalk · 06/03/2023 10:32

I would have a completely normal dinner. I can't think of any meal that would stop me eating as normal several hours later. A roast isn't magic, it's just a certain type of meal.

Laiste · 06/03/2023 11:04

I really had no expectations when i started this thread i was just sitting there thinking ''i still feel fullish - will i eat later? Will i not? Have i got anything i fancy ... ? (no crumpets in the house Sad) ''

Then i thought - I wonder what most MNetters do? And i didn't expect many replies but this is great! Lets carry on!

A warm handshake to all the fellow bread and gravy'ers out there and welcome to any new converts 😆

It's interesting that a few have felt this thread leans towards being anti-food, as personally i feel the opposite. I thought more would say they wouldn't eat again and I've loved reading all the different light snacks/small meals/bits and pieces that people have.

Some posters seem quite angered by the question. And the bread!

I'm quite surprised by the quantity of crumpets being eaten. Love them obvs. just didn't realise what a nation of crumpetters we are.

A special mention to @Bellaboo01 's dad who ''likes to* drink the vegetable water'' ?!? *😳😂 That's a new one for me. I mean it's fabulous and wins the thread really!

What else - oh yes! In the end DD3 came home at about 7 with a beautiful cream donut with strawberry bits for me, from the desert shop in town - so i ate that 😍

And then at 8 DH made cheeses on toast and i pinched a half slice of that! 😜

I would not.
my DH would.
us both being different people with differing appetites.

SettlingForAnotherMuffin · 06/03/2023 12:54

I had a roast yesterday and said on the thread I would not eat again.

But the thread then made me so hungry I ended up defrosting some homemade lasagne from the freezer and eating that!

BessieSurtees · 06/03/2023 13:03

yeh but @SettlingForAnotherMuffin did you have a proper roast finished off with the bread dipped in gravy?

I thought bread dipped in gravy came from years ago when there wasn't enough meat so bread was used to bulk it out. I do however remember my grandparents would let us dip home made bread with a crust in the beef dripping OMG salty and beefy and doughy and crusty. Literally fat on bread though 😳

UndertheCedartree · 06/03/2023 13:05

I might want a snack in the evening or might not. I wouldn't want another meal.

LlynTegid · 06/03/2023 13:17

Something small yes.

I’d have just settled for another muffin 😁

Lincslady53 · 06/03/2023 13:49

We would have a picky tea, cup of tea and a few bits and pieces, but when we were kids in the 60s, on Sundays we would have a cooked breakfast at about 8.30, roast dinner with pudding, on the table at 1.00, then 5.00 was teatime, trifle, sandwiches and cake. Then, as we got older and stayed up a bit later, we would have a bit if supper before bed, cocoa, hotlicks or ovaltine with a couple of biscuits or a sandwich. 5 kids in the house none of us overweight, but between meals we would be out playing in the park or nearby fields, swimming in the outdoor pool or taking the dog for a walk. How my mum coped, both physically and financially I don't know.

Maybebabyno2 · 06/03/2023 13:51

I would need to eat again and I've had a bypass 😂

The competitive eating on here is rediculous!

ZeldaB · 06/03/2023 13:56

Yep. I could not sleep unless I’d eaten more recently than that.

Orcubed · 06/03/2023 13:59

Depends how much I’d eaten. Probably would have toast or cereal or a sandwich. We went out for a meal a few weeks ago and I had a huge roast plus one and a half puddings and didn’t feel hungry enough to eat anything in the evening but usually I’d have something light.

Reddahlias · 06/03/2023 14:09

Surely this depends on SO many factors including 1) how big the meal was (how many calories), 2) how active you are that day and 3) how old you are - a growing skinny teen will need a lot more good than a 60 year old woman, for example.

Therefore we're getting so many different answers!

Well yeah… but the OP asked what people personally would do, which is by nature based on their particular circumstances. She didn’t ask for one definitive answer.

I dipped the yorkshire pudding in gravy.

(Although I have to say one of the food of the gods is bread dipped in the chicken juices at the bottom of the roasting pan).
