Not surprised some holiday islands don’t want Brits?

Just spent 2 weeks in Tenerife.
Observed some pretty bad behaviour on number of occasions - all drunken - and all Brits.
It’s a resort known for couples and families and visitors from all over Europe: Iceland, Dutch, Czech, German etc so definitely not overwhelming British tourists. And not a resort that is known to ‘cater’ for stag & hens.
Three examples (there are several more including many drunken football related scenes.)

Two couples (with children) totally smashed one night at hotel when entertainment was on. Loud, shouting, obnoxious, stupid behaviour - the entertainers were clearly annoyed.

Two guys (early 20’s) in restaurant early evening (lots of Spanish families there) totally wasted. Kept saying to each other in loud voices ‘I’m so f*ed’ and shouting, stupid giggling and lots of loud swearing and horrible language about licking your mother. Chucked drink over each other.

Group of drunken hens climbing on promotion animals outside shops, early evening. Lots of swearing, shouting. Observed by many people. Shop staff standing observing.

I know we were all young once etc etc.
AIBU to not be surprised at the latest news of holiday islands wanting other holiday makers and not Brits? Or is this acceptable holiday behaviour? Were we just unlucky to see it all?

Oh no! We've just booked a fortnight in Adeje in July! Please tell me it's not that bad! I'm really worried now we're not going to be welcome

Haven't been for a few years but I always found it nice. We did see a hen party walking past ok the promenade once but they were obviously on their way out so no more than giggly. Both mums were there too. They weren't in our hotel anyway so can't say how they ended up.

I do wonder if it's more to do with money. For years, resorts put up with the antics of Brits becuase we would come in droves and put money in people's pocket. They would turn a blind eye to bad behaviour becuase resorts were 80-90% Brits. Now our economy is in freefall and resorts seem to be attracting and putting effort into guests from other counties. Noticed this recently at resort I went to 5-6 years ago. The resort was 70% Brits. Stunning 5* resort but so many drunk brits, a few fights and puke. Went back a couple of months ago during the exact same period as before and this time it was 70% french, mostly older couples. Totally different vibe. People dressed up for dinner, no binge drinking. It was full of elegant and refined customers with blatantly had a few euros in the pocket. There was a lot of complaints from Brits said they felt felt invisible, received slow service and other nationalities got preferential treatment. Becuase when abroad, everyone assumes I'm American so I would get fantastic service while I would see other British guests being sidelined!

The issue this thread is about is this behaviour is happening in Europe, not the UK. So going off to Europe is not the answer here.

You see this behaviour in most British city centres on Saturday nights. You really can avoid it by going to Europe! I’ve never seen this behaviour in any other country (except of course when unfortunate to bump into a group of British yobs there!).

It’s interesting that a few posters equate more expensive holidays attracting better behaved tourists.

It’s true, there’s no point trying to pretend otherwise. Clearly nobody is saying that everyone on a limited budget is an embarrassing thug, but there’s a definite correlation, and we aren’t hated everywhere.
A waiter once asked me where I was from, and when I said England he said, “of course, three times sorry and four thank yous to order one drink, of course you are English!”

Some of our city centres are a disgrace at weekends. Why everyone accepts it is sad.

I don’t think it’s necessarily true that cheaper hotels = bad behaviour from Brits. It seems to be more places that you can access easily. You can stay at some beautiful, very cheap places in Montenegro, for example, direct flights with Ryanair really cheap, short taxi from the airport and never seen bad behaviour from Brits. It seems to be more certain resorts or places that offer package holidays through big companies that suffer, even though that is very often a lot more expensive than the example I’ve just given.

LoobyDop · 06/03/2023 19:27

That’s true, @MyBloodyBrother. It’s a certain kind of holiday.

Freewheeler1 · 07/03/2023 17:22

Agree with those who have commented that many islands and resorts that have grown wealthy on mass tourism over decades should be careful not to completely bite (off) the hand that feeds. That's why there is a political debate in Lanzarote about discouraging British tourism. Some politicians are for, others against. There is a fear among businesses there that anti British declarations by their leaders might hurt their businesses.

Mary46 · 07/03/2023 17:48

We back from Adeje was very nice. We not big drinkers. But not nice as op said. You can get that here too in Ireland in summer if weather good. So not just in canaries.

Endlesssummer2022 · 07/03/2023 17:50

As PP said, a lot of resorts used to put up with poor behaviour from Brits because we had lots of money and were always happy to part with it abroad.

However, now we’ve fucked our economy, people are starting to realise what it’s like to be foreign abroad from a country seen as poor.

It will get worse. Watch as the Polish tourists get the best seats in the Spanish restaurant and attentive service whilst you’re lucky to get in despite their being empty tables or just have the menus chucked on the table in front of you by a waiter who won’t even give you proper eye contact.

SwingandaPrayer · 08/03/2023 14:44

So much pretentious snobbery and stereotyping going on on this thread. Funny how so many people look down their noses at the Canary Islands when most never step foot out of the resort. Like judging the UK and its culture and locals when you've only been to Weston Supermare. I live here and I see plenty of pissed up folk of all nationalities, including locals. Brits are happy to accept street fights, pissing in the streets and tattoos at home but you dont want to see it when you go abroad? Talk about double standards!!!!

OrinocoGlow · 08/03/2023 15:24

That's a strange post SwingandaPrayer. Why do you think Brits are happy to accept street fights and pissing in the streets at home or anywhere else? Just because it happens it doesn't mean people like it happening. I would want to avoid people who behave like that anywhere as far as I could so would not go to holiday resorts with a reputation for bad behaviour, whether in the Canary Islands or anywhere else. So it's not really a double standard.

It’s not all of us though. A subsection but many spend and are welcome for it.

Exactly. There are people who think it's clever to get drunk and be obnoxious. However when I was on holiday in the south of France a few years ago, I asked the owner of the gite where I stayed why the visitors' book was only signed by British people. He told me he accepted only British visitors 'because they respect the property'.

FrostyFifi · 08/03/2023 15:34

Unfortunately there are big chunks of the Spanish coastline that have been visually ruined by all the hideous concrete developments so I genuinely don't think any lover of culture of any nationality is likely to want to holiday there, so the booze brigade is what you're left with.

I absolutely love Spain but I wouldn't spend a holiday in one of those areas.
