Not surprised some holiday islands don’t want Brits?

Just spent 2 weeks in Tenerife.
Observed some pretty bad behaviour on number of occasions - all drunken - and all Brits.
It’s a resort known for couples and families and visitors from all over Europe: Iceland, Dutch, Czech, German etc so definitely not overwhelming British tourists. And not a resort that is known to ‘cater’ for stag & hens.
Three examples (there are several more including many drunken football related scenes.)

Two couples (with children) totally smashed one night at hotel when entertainment was on. Loud, shouting, obnoxious, stupid behaviour - the entertainers were clearly annoyed.

Two guys (early 20’s) in restaurant early evening (lots of Spanish families there) totally wasted. Kept saying to each other in loud voices ‘I’m so f*ed’ and shouting, stupid giggling and lots of loud swearing and horrible language about licking your mother. Chucked drink over each other.

Group of drunken hens climbing on promotion animals outside shops, early evening. Lots of swearing, shouting. Observed by many people. Shop staff standing observing.

I know we were all young once etc etc.
AIBU to not be surprised at the latest news of holiday islands wanting other holiday makers and not Brits? Or is this acceptable holiday behaviour? Were we just unlucky to see it all?

I always avoid hotels and going out late in the evenings anywhere that attracts (British) tourists. I book places that are described as 'off the beaten track' or 'a retreat'. There's no point in having my holiday ruined by dickheads.

Your comments aren’t very clear then. Your original ‘meh’ post and subsequent reply about moving away if you don’t like it are why I formed the impression I did. Not sure how else to interpret then?

Expect if you reply at all, it will be with another gnomic one-liner.

Happy to meet your expectations and say: it's not for me to teach verbal reasoning and I don't have the wherewithal to challenge all your presumptions.

It’s interesting that a few posters equate more expensive holidays attracting better behaved tourists.

whatadayforadaydream · 06/03/2023 09:25

British people do generally binge drink more than other cultures.

But these resorts are often set up to encourage it. Why else offer budget all inclusives. People aren't paying to eat the average buffet to their heart's content are they?

We went to what would be a more upmarket holiday destination recently. You could still tell that the Brits were drinking more than other nationalities, but there was none of that rowdy behaviour.

Yes some young people are disrespectful but what well heeled visitor is going to find Lanzarote attractive? The hotel offerings are dire, the culture extremely limited.

I can’t help but feel the Spanish tourist board are utterly deluded if they think Beniform is going to beat Tuscany, the South of France etc for hot choices of MC guests this summer or any summer. To be so rude about the very people that prop up their economies in certain areas is crass and vulgar, and self defeating. Guests rightly will use their well earned holiday savings on the Greek islands and Turkey etc where they will be welcomed.

I think they have probably had enough of it. Yes they have made some money but they have also seen at what cost and the damage. And realised that there is a more lucrative market. Good luck to them. Why would any country want them.

@HeavenIsAHalfpipe In Spain, a group of around thirty 20-30 y.o. from Denmark.

I've spent a lot of time in Denmark and they get in some of the worst drunken states I've seen! I agree, the "it's only the british" is just garbage.

Danes love to drink as well. My experience though is that they tend to drink more steadily. They probably are all the same at the end of the day, but don't tend to be quite so shit faced around the pool at 11:30 am.

YayayaCookaYaya · 06/03/2023 09:32

There's certain countries/places I'd never holiday because of this type of embarrassing behaviour.

YayayaCookaYaya · 06/03/2023 09:34

Brits are so easy to spot - usually covered in tattoos and overweight, tend to wear any of these items: sparkly flip flops, football top, collared polo tops, boat shoes.

Guis23 · 06/03/2023 09:35

Other countries behaviour does not mean what some Brits do is alright and somehow excused.
What some Brits do abroad is coarse, vulgar and lacks class. Other countries may also have similar citizens. It doesn't make it alright for ours to do it.

Everyone? That must depend on where you go on holiday

HaveYouSeenNancy · 06/03/2023 09:36

In the Canary Islands I'm often handed the menu open on the German or Dutch page, in a fairly abrupt manner. When I flick through to the English page the demeanor of the staff instantly improves ('English?' With a smile) so I'm surprised to hear that British tourists are unpopular. I avoid stag/hen type places though.

YayayaCookaYaya · 06/03/2023 09:38

And agree with another poster who says different areas get different badly behaved people.

Caribbean and Central America - it was the Americans

Africa - it was Eastern Europeans and Russians

Europe - the Brits

And duck lips and eye lash extensions.

Me and my husband tend to play guess the nationality if bored around the pool. It's fun and very often people live up to visual sterotypes.

That said, I in a way admire the Brits. They (and speaking very generally and stereotypically) tend to really make and effort to decorate themselves, often very creatively. Lots of bright colours, lots of tattoos. Might not be as classy as the french woman in her navy swimsuit, but they are definitely much more interesting to watch. I think, rightfully, that Brits are known for being creative and brave with the way they present themselves. I rather like that.

How very ignorant to compare Tenerife with Ibiza. But then there is more to Ibiza than San Antonio. We have stayed at AI (shock horror) hotels in Europe and the Caribbean and have never witnessed Brits behaving as described. I have seen Americans in the Caribbean though having to be warned to curb their behaviour in a family friendly resort.

Yup! We went to the Bahamas one Feb half term, not realising it coincided with the US spring break.

Our "family friendly" AI resort was overrun with student hooligans. It was horrible. And expensive.

Never done AI since come to think of it.

MyBloodyBrother · 06/03/2023 11:46

@Springchicken75 have you been to Lanzarote? The last place I stayed (Fincas De Arrieta) had Gordon Ramsey and half of Mumford & Sons as previous guests. Some of the towns up on the North coast have some of the best surfing in the world, there are some beautiful villages up in the hills and people travel from all over the world to see the various César Manrique buildings.

If you do a package tour and only go along the strip outside the hotel you will think it’s like the TV show Benidorm. Most people that genuinely love travel aren’t quite that blinkered though.

rookiemere · 06/03/2023 12:26

Well I consider myself fairly "well heeled " which I think is a euphemism for middle class, and we had a lovely holiday in Lanzarote in October.

We stayed in a 4 star hotel and the food was amazing and there was no drunken rowdiness on show. We also bought a Lanzarote visitors pass and visited the Volcano area, a cactus garden and a modern art gallery amongst other things.

Granted it wasn't Tuscany, but it was a lot nicer than say Orlando in terms of cultural things to do.

We've also been to Tenerife a number of times and don't recognise it from the descriptions here. Granted we stay in a family friendly aparthotel that isn't cheap and hang out on the Del Duque beach which is also quite pricey.

I don't have tattoos but please tell me what I can wear so people dont think I'm a chav. I do love a sparkly shoe (always matching bag) and himself has an array of polo shirts and is nagged into boat shoes for the evenings. Neither of us seem to stand out in the 5* AI hotels we stay at but I'm worried now. You are obviously much classier than me so please help me with my chavvy taste.

Well, yes. There is worse behaviour at cheaper places, have you done both? I have and the difference is massive.

Dressing on holiday is a whole other amusement!

But no, I find people who show their tattoos, toes, or think that dressing for dinner involves a kaftan, a fanny pack, bum bag, or sporting kit be it rugby, football or formula one, flip flops or a conspicuous display of flesh is pretty naff. That is not just a Brit thing.

Holiday outfits are very funny. Russian women are outrageous, the least stylish are German men.

  1. a fannypack is the same as a bumbag and the only place I've seen them since the last century is in Orlando
  2. People showing toes amuses you? In a hot country?
  3. There is a world of difference between flip flops from the Market and the glittery type worn in the evening on holiday, in fact they are almost certainly toe post sandals.
  4. Why would people cover that tattoos?
Harebrain · 06/03/2023 13:17

Whilst I’m not condoning bad behaviour or people drinking too much, you have to question why bars in holiday resorts carry on serving drinks to people who have obviously over indulged already? It seems they’re happy to keep on serving alcohol and taking money but unhappy with the consequences.

Until now. They have had enough of the vomit and general vulgarity of it all.

Oh no! We've just booked a fortnight in Adeje in July! Please tell me it's not that bad! I'm really worried now we're not going to be welcome

PillBoxes · 06/03/2023 13:59

Anywhere that has huge numbers of visitors packed into apartments/AI hotels and millions of sunbeds on the beach and around pools (sunbed races) are to be avoided at all costs.

Didn't Covid show us how a paddling pool in the garden and a keg of beer/crate of wine is just as good, and so good for air miles/planet saving too.

alanabennett · 06/03/2023 14:03

I've just left Manchester airport (this morning) to return "home" overseas. I went to get breakfast and the place was full of lairy, shaven-headed, tattooed "lads" aged 30+ necking down the Stella. At 8:15 in the morning.
