Not surprised some holiday islands don’t want Brits?

Just spent 2 weeks in Tenerife.
Observed some pretty bad behaviour on number of occasions - all drunken - and all Brits.
It’s a resort known for couples and families and visitors from all over Europe: Iceland, Dutch, Czech, German etc so definitely not overwhelming British tourists. And not a resort that is known to ‘cater’ for stag & hens.
Three examples (there are several more including many drunken football related scenes.)

Two couples (with children) totally smashed one night at hotel when entertainment was on. Loud, shouting, obnoxious, stupid behaviour - the entertainers were clearly annoyed.

Two guys (early 20’s) in restaurant early evening (lots of Spanish families there) totally wasted. Kept saying to each other in loud voices ‘I’m so f*ed’ and shouting, stupid giggling and lots of loud swearing and horrible language about licking your mother. Chucked drink over each other.

Group of drunken hens climbing on promotion animals outside shops, early evening. Lots of swearing, shouting. Observed by many people. Shop staff standing observing.

I know we were all young once etc etc.
AIBU to not be surprised at the latest news of holiday islands wanting other holiday makers and not Brits? Or is this acceptable holiday behaviour? Were we just unlucky to see it all?

Meh not ideal, but it's what drives those local economies. No doubt they missed them during the pandemic.

FrenchandSaunders · 05/03/2023 09:16

Adeje?

Strugglingtodomybest · 05/03/2023 09:18

No doubt they missed them during the pandemic.

What? They missed them so much that they banned them?!

Dillydallydilly · 05/03/2023 09:20

Sorry, where have Brits actually been banned from?

dumbstruckdumptruck · 05/03/2023 09:27

No, you weren't just unlucky. I live in a similar place and it's deeply embarrassing. And @CantStopWontStop0 we missed tourism during the pandemic, enormously, but most definitely not that kind of behaviour.

Horrible, abusive, drunken and chaotic behaviour is not what drives our economy. What it does is have a massive negative impact on the mental health of people working in the industry, cost a lot in repairing damages and policing, and make other people avoid these destinations because they develop a bad reputation.

The "we support your economy so you can just put up with it" mentality is all a part of the problem.

That sort of behaviour doesn't drive any economy. Quite the opposite, it turns people off going there.

Pugdogmom · 05/03/2023 09:35

Having witnessed this type of behaviour so many times, I actively avoid places and destinations that attract other Brits for this very reason. It's completely embarrassing.

TreeByLeaf · 05/03/2023 09:36

Really selfishly I’m gutted , because if it means prices go up and they start holidaying here, it will be horrid. Completely understand why they want to ban tourists like this.

Highlighta · 05/03/2023 09:48

I worked on a resort many years ago, and I don't think much had changed. It was very obvious who was European and who were British, just from their behaviour.

I cannot think of one time a group of Europeans trashed their accomodation having a booze up, but happened a fair bit with British. Mainly groups of youngsters or when there was a big group of a few families holidaying together.

The time of the season made a difference too though. Those who paid the higher tarriffs and came in peak season were far less difficult than those who had come on the cheaper beginning and end of season rates. They would also moan and complain the most about accomodation/variety of food/the weather? (Like we had arranged for it to rain).

It was definitely an eye opener for me, having come from a totally different country.

And you would happily put up with that behaviour on your street ?

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 05/03/2023 09:57

Its embarrassing when people act like this on holiday. Luckily as we are now older and have kids we don't see as much of it as we try to stay in areas that don't attract it - in adeji it only gets a bit like that if you walk along to colon bay and beyond

tanstaafl · 05/03/2023 09:58

I thought Spain had brought in laws on hotels ( and restaurants? ) limiting the amount of drinks per customer to try and stop these situations?

It was in the news this week that Lanzarote want to limit the number of British tourists.

lightsandtunnels · 05/03/2023 10:02

Recent news article (taken from Google) from Lanzarote and seems Ibiza and other islands are saying similar things.

“The Spanish island of Lanzarote wants fewer British tourists.
The popular holiday destination in the Canary Island has declared itself a “tourist-saturated area” and is now considering ways to limit the number of UK visitors it receives.
The new strategy is a bid to “reduce dependence on the British market”.

Isn't Tenerife the 'party' island in the Canaries the same ways as Ibiza is in the Balearics.

It's why I never go to either.

These islands set out to cater to that market.

Families go to Lanzarote or Minorca. Been like that since they opened up in the 1970s.

Locals not employed in tourism complain the world over. You should hear the citizens of Edinburgh bitch about the festival and tourists every year.

Yes. Wouldn’t come back!

Absolutely. We are definitely having a rethink about where we holiday in future.

You can always always tell who the Brits are on holidays. Other nations have decorum.

Fimofriend · 05/03/2023 10:07

What? I thought that waitstaff all over the world found it delightful when Brits shout "Shut up you effing foreigner" at them. I was sure that every cleaner in every hotel feels just like Charles Ryder's valet at the university in the series "Brideshead Revisited". Ie: honoured to clean vomit up that was deposited by such charming people.

This was Adeje and it was pretty much scattered around along the front and the restaurant incident was in the hills in a quieter more Spanish residential area. Sad times!

No, there is much much more to Tenerife than this. The island has stunning nature with beautiful vulcanic landscapes. I'm not surprised if they'd want to curb the British Party section of the market! This is precisely the problem. Beautiful places end up with an unpleasant reputation and everything spirals in the wrong direction

Abreezeitheglade · 05/03/2023 10:11

I don’t fly anywhere but my friend has great advice of looking on trip advisor for bitchy comments about German tourists then booking that resort to avoid brits. Made me laugh but probably good advice

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 05/03/2023 11:14

Ah that is a shame we've never really seen any of that behaviour there. Hope it hasn't ruined your holiday

donttellmehesalive · 05/03/2023 11:32

We don't have a very good reputation anywhere really do we. Binge drinking, obnoxious behaviour, sense of entitlement, bad tippers. It's because everybody thinks they should be allied to do whatever they want to do regardless of impact on others.

No, it really isn’t. That’s like refusing to consider travelling to the UK because you’d seen what Blackpool or Torquay is like on a Saturday night.
