Hardly ever tick ‘allow substitutions’ on my online shop because of past experience, however I didn’t want to risk no wine and I’m not too fussy.

AIBU to think this was a ridiculous substitution? There must have been 20+ different white wines in the price range I’d selected, yet for some unknown reason the person picking this shop decided to an Alcohol Free bottle was the closest match.

Worst still DH didn’t notice it was an alcohol free bottle and accepted the substitute Angry

During lockdown I ordered a pack of 24 soft white toilet rolls. It was substituted with a pack of 24 soft white BREAD rolls 🙄

Imagine the poo crumbs 😱🤣

slithytoveisascientist · 05/03/2023 10:28

It's not necessary either . Morrisons via Tesco allows you to select what your suitable substitute would be, makes more sense

slithytoveisascientist · 05/03/2023 10:28

Morrisons via Amazon ffs

Madbadanddangeroustoo · 05/03/2023 14:32

I feel your pain

whynotwhatknot · 05/03/2023 14:44

yeah its shite but you know now before the shop comes they send you a list of your order and subs

if they done that to my dh i think hed march over there and throw it at them

Reinventinganna · 05/03/2023 14:51

I once got proper ham instead of my Quorn ham. I don’t eat meat.
Also blonde shampoo- I have black hair.

Hotvimto3 · 05/03/2023 14:51

I had dog food sent in place of jelly

KimberleyClark · 05/03/2023 15:04

we ve also had

cat food
replaced with
dog food 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Would have been fine the other way around, IME dogs will happily eat cat food but not vice versa.

@PissTakeSubstitution

Tesco Customer Services are brilliant, give them a call. I've even had a driver bring the correct item around in the afternoon run.

I stopped the substitues though, but that's mainly because I live alone & have a very
restricted diet (medical reasons) so even 'sensible' substitutions are very rarely ok for me.

before stopping th substitutions I did hve some funny ones and 'no suitable substitute' for items that they clearly would have had.

I kind of miss the random events!

PS zi hope DH had the decency to go out & get you some decent wine!!

Fragglecock74 · 05/03/2023 17:40

I do this online shopping at the supermarket I work at. Unfortunately, the humans can’t pick the substitutions, the handset tells us what to substitute and we cannot pick the obvious next best thing.

Usually, when I see a ridiculous substitute I just say I’ve got it but then pick a good substitute and put a hand written note on the customers invoice to say what I’ve done.

There should be a comment box for the customer to add any instructions next to every item on the shopping list.

ALongHardWinter · 05/03/2023 18:09

Oldnproud 😂😂😂 That's hilarious!

thirdwheel · 05/03/2023 18:15

PissTakeSubstitution · 04/03/2023 20:22

No way. I’m not buying that.

They would have had to walk past all the decent alcohol containing Sauvignon bottles to get to the alcohol free section.

What if the picker was under 18 or doesn't drink alcohol. They might not have realised and just followed the handset recommendation.

Dibbydoos · 05/03/2023 18:16

This made me laugh, sorry OP, they probably didn't read it was alcohol free....

Pickers are so rubbish! The substitutions they send sometimes are utterly ridiculous and don’t even have any resemblance to the item actually ordered! It’s getting worse.

Silvers11 · 05/03/2023 18:20

It isn't going to help at all but Tesco once substituted 6 Bananas with .........wait for it.....6 lemons 🍋 🍋 . I mean, seriously, WTAF??

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 05/03/2023 18:22

TippityTappingLikeAWaterboatman · 04/03/2023 20:02

I'd be livid, get your money back, there's no way anyone (customer) would check closely to see if it's alcohol free, I mean you'd just bloody assume.
I've had ordinary wheat pasta sent as a substitute for gluten free pasta !!!

Have been sent no substitute for regular pasta as apparently 'there were no suitable substitutes'.
Tesco too.

'No suitable substitutes' is also the message that appears if you asked for no substitute.
A lot of people don't realise that they selected that option. Maybe that's what happened?

StellakateT · 05/03/2023 18:35

I ordered a vegetarian pie and the substitute was a steak and kidney pie. Was told the substitutions are done by computer no person involved 🙄😁

FurElise · 05/03/2023 18:41

Asda did this to me once during lockdown. I actually cried when I realised. Then DS pointed out the other 11 bottles were ok. I had to pull myself together then 😂. I gifted the AF one to my pregnant neighbour so it didn't go to waste!

ReadersD1gest · 04/03/2023 22:09

How dumb would you have to be? Nobody's forcing them to load trolleys for a living.

How rude!! They've maybe got a job loading trolleys because it's what was available and for them a crappy job is better than no job at all. Or maybe it's a second job. Or a job that they're doing to help pay for uni. Don't be so condescending to people in employment, even if it's not the job you'd choose.

I'm grateful for trolley pickers - means I don't have to go shopping after a day at work.

Please can you let someone in management know how stupid their automatic programming is. And how it annoying it is !

Telibarb · 05/03/2023 19:00

I always add a note if I tick SUB. In your case I'd've put "any sauvignon blanc ok, or pinot grigio".

Alcohol free wine is rank. 🤢 Madness!

CP191989 · 05/03/2023 19:07

We don’t pick what we sub things with we just scan the thing it tells us and as you go by location (it gives you isle/the side/the mod/the shelf/ the number along the shelf) they probably didn’t even see it was AF or they probably would have had enough brain cells to override it despite people thinking we do the job because we are idiots 😅

Fragglecock74 · 05/03/2023 19:09

@Guis23 The Branch manager wouldn’t give two hoots. They want rid of it as it doesn’t make any money and stops us stacking shelves unlike Deliveroo which brings in thousands upon thousands each week. I feel so rude when I’m racing around doing a Deliveroo as you are timed and customers ask you a question and we are meant to direct them to a colleague to help but it just feels rude and not customer friendly at all. Plus they aren’t replacing people who leave and we are thin on the ground I’m seeing this in a lot of shops now.

Morgysmum · 05/03/2023 19:11

I had a crazy, substition off Asda. I had ordered quorn sausages. I aren't vegetarian, but following slimming World.
The substitution was sausage rolls.( So meat products. for meat free ones.) that really works well Adsa. I declined it.
