Eat Out To Spread The Virus About

verdantverdure · 04/03/2023 08:52

AIBU to think that it was basic common sense to know in advance that Rishi Sunak's Eat Out To Help Out short term boost for the economy would begin the covid second wave and kill tens of thousands of people in the U.K.?

YABU Who knew that packing out restaurants during an airborne pandemic would lead to infections and deaths?

YANBU Eat Out To Help Out was obviously going to cost British lives.

I went out a couple of times and everything was socially distanced, masks unless you were eating etc.

I am not sure it was a year idea in general. But whenever retractions had been relaxed people would start going out more and do things they couldn’t do in lockdown. Relaxing restrictions was always going to see a rise in infections m and therefore deaths.

But, as I remember, lockdowns weren’t to prevent deaths. They knew they couldn’t. It was to try and relieve some pressure on the NHS. Less people mixing, less cases.

But it couldn’t go on forever.

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 04/03/2023 09:06

YABU. The country never should have been locked down in the first place. It was outrageous.

Standbyguest · 04/03/2023 09:15

Oh ffs. I highly doubt thousands of people died because of going to a socially distanced meal out. Remember, the death toll on covid was calculated based on people who had tested positive up to 28 DAYS before dying. The numbers were bollocks.

Penguinsaregreat · 04/03/2023 09:20

Yes the numbers included everyone who died from other causes BUT happened to test positive for covid.
As someone who had to work throughout the pandemic it doesn’t upset me at all
I’m totally aware the likes of Matt Hancock Do not care one bit about anyone else. If you don’t understand that then you are a fool.

FrostyFifi · 04/03/2023 09:23

Now is probably not a good time to be coming out as Team Hancock btw.

DownInTheDumpster · 04/03/2023 09:28

I had friends who worked in hospitality and it was an absolute godsend. In fact it’s probably the only thing that got their small business through the pandemic (them and many many others) so there was that benefit.

LakieLady · 04/03/2023 09:30

YANBU.

DP and I called it Eat Out to Die Out.

Optionschange · 04/03/2023 09:32

We loved it...

I think it was needed for the small businesses. But yes it was also obviously going to lead to a rise... but it was a tricky balance.

Are you always so dramatic? 😂

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 04/03/2023 09:33

YABU.

We need to stop acting like COVID was some sort of horror movie zombie virus. For the vast, vast majority it was harmless.

And heaven forbid people people take responsibility for their own lives and action. It wasn’t “Forcing people to eat out to help out”. Everyone who went out and ate when everything was half price (including us, and we did actually get COVID around that time) took that risk themselves.

The Tories are total schisters of course but can we please stop pretending that people have lost the ability to take responsibility for their actions, and are aware of those actions?

BeetleyCarapace · 04/03/2023 09:34

I know at least a dozen people who kept their jobs due to that scheme. And I am not a natural Sunak supporter or Tory voter.

People had a choice whether to go out or not. If you felt it wasn’t safe for you, you didn’t have to go to the restaurants.

Vegrocks · 04/03/2023 09:34

Loved it! Fond memories

can’t believe you’re dredging this up again though. A dull Saturday your end?

The effects of lockdown, all its nuances - such a MH problems, people’s now inability to socially interact, the poor babies and toddlers who were cooped up and missed out on interaction, the effects on children’s education not being in school, the exams unfairness - will be felt for years and are 1000x more damaging than COVID.

Exactly right.

We loved Eat out to Help out. Everything was distanced, restaurants took a great deal of care in my experience.

And - spoiler - none of us died. Just managed to retain some sense of sanity rather than being stuck at home convinced mass death lay outside our front door.

I remember a number of independent chains said the same and they are still running now. You have to speculate to accumulate sometimes

ThreeKneeRepeater · 04/03/2023 09:37

YABU to post this on AIBU.
There is a topic called Covid. Put your speculations on there and let the rest of us crack on with our day.

x2boys · 04/03/2023 09:41

Anybody with half a brain knew that mixing more wouldd cause an increase in covid, but people were also going on foreign holidays at the time ,it's nearly three years ago now mistakes were made ,people alsi.need to.take responsibility for their own actions ,and collectively we all need to move on from the pandemic .

Grumpybutfunny · 04/03/2023 09:42

Shame he couldn't extend it, was great for hospitality. The issue was people were stupid the scheme was aimed at healthy adults, families and young adults who could catch COVID isolate for 14 days and that was the end of it. The problem was the vulnerable went out and mixed not only in pubs and restaurants but shops etc when these people were incubating it. The lifting of restriction on the vulnerable is what killed thousands not eat out to help out.
