Aldi bag search

Motorcycle panniers, on the baggage hook on the trolley, not in the trolley, reasonable or unreasonable? I told the checkout operator that it was unacceptable, and he said it was company policy. Strangely enough my fairly big shoulder bag, which I was wearing, was ignored. I felt a bit sorry for the bloke tbh, I don't think he really wanted to do it.

I shop there weekly, it's not like I'm new. Anyway, I consented, but I wont necessarily do so if it happens too often. Profiling perhaps, because I bought a bottle of rum, ha!

Tooled up, ready to steal and thieve? I dont think so! The shoulder bag is the one I was wearing, which was totally ignored, makes sense, nope!

Perfect position and angle to drop in three packets of steak, couple of chicken breasts, big block of cheese, some razor blades/the most expensive face creams and maybe a smallish bottle of spirits, there.

aldi are not the police

Exactly - presumably you’d be happier with the police searching your house ‘if you’ve got nothing to hide’, because they’re the police after all, not just some supermarket?

We should all just count ourselves lucky that supermarkets even deign to let us in to so we can add to their massive profits. We are just mere customers after all.

I'll assume you're taking the piss

@NeverDropYourMooncup Misunderstood your msg, sorry. Yes, you could fit all that in my shoulder bag.

Why would you have any issue with this unless you have something to hide?

Because I have OCD and don't want some randomers hooves pawing through my bag and touching my stuff.

Because it's lazy and unnecessary. You'd all be the first to whine if teachers did whole class punishments.

If shop staff have reason to suspect wrongdoing, that is one thing. They can watch you at the till, there are also cameras at the tills.

Random, unnecessary humiliating checks, especially when the machine doesn't give you a receipt as default, is unnecessary. As others have said, I will vote with my wallet. We have a newish Aldi in my town, but if they try this with me, that will be it.

i have nothing to hide
i think it is very fair

far better to do everyone than those who are suspect

ClareBlue · 06/03/2023 09:42

So you take basic precautions in case your property is stolen by bringing in the panniers from your bike but object to the shop taking basic precautions to reduce their cost base and keep prices for all of us as low as possible.

Providing it’s a clear policy upon entering the store, so you have a choice to take your business elsewhere and it is also being visibly being implemented to everyone.
Randomly selecting someone unaware at the checkout, would feel personal and humiliating to most, regardless of whether you have ‘something to hide’ or not.

Does anyone actually get caught during these Aldi bag searches? I often wonder if they're achieving anything other than getting customers backs up.
I used to be asked to open my backpack all the time. In realty it's a handbag with shoulder straps but I think the checkout assistants have instructions to search backpacks without considering their size. I just avoid Aldi now. There are better specials at their competitors.
