Aldi bag search

Motorcycle panniers, on the baggage hook on the trolley, not in the trolley, reasonable or unreasonable? I told the checkout operator that it was unacceptable, and he said it was company policy. Strangely enough my fairly big shoulder bag, which I was wearing, was ignored. I felt a bit sorry for the bloke tbh, I don't think he really wanted to do it.

I shop there weekly, it's not like I'm new. Anyway, I consented, but I wont necessarily do so if it happens too often. Profiling perhaps, because I bought a bottle of rum, ha!

I'm assuming they're easily stolen from a motorbike in the car park.

If I had panniers with, say, my laptop in, I'd hardly be leaving them where they could be nicked by any passer by. I'm surprised that so many people on this thread haven't been able to work that out for themselves

Exactly ! I take my brand new bicycle panniers with me because there's already stuff in there plus the cost of the panniers. They'd be very easy to cut off. I doubt anyone cycles/rides around with completely empty panniers.

KrisAkabusi · 04/03/2023 12:49

You're bringing your panniers in because you're afraid of someone stealing from them. Aldi are checking your panniers because they're afraid you're stealing from them. What's the difference? You're accepting that theft is possible and that precautions need to be taken to prevent it.

OneTC · 04/03/2023 12:55

The presumption that we are all guilty until proven innocent maybe which is the complete opposite of the laws of this country?

That's in court, not at the point of being apprehended

That's because when you've been apprehended you been seen stealing. Or atleast should if been if you've been stopped

Because if she left them on the bike to go shopping, she'd come back to find them or any previous items she'd bought elsewhere were gone, probably.

These are the panniers OP posted earlier. They actually screw onto the bike frame, and cost £50, not £100s as someone else suggested. It would be more trouble than its worth to try to nick these!

You need these - they screw onto your bike frame.

Am I the only one who is wondering how you could hang not 1 but 2 motorcycle panniers on the hook at the back of the trolley?

Motorbike panniers usually come as a pair, with material which goes over the seat and a bag on either side.

caringcarer · 04/03/2023 13:21

I don't see the problem if you had nothing unpaid for in there. Shop lifting adds pounds to the prices.

tiger2691 · 04/03/2023 13:24

@Soontobe60 the panniers pic i posted was just a stock library photo - of panniers, mine are throwover (the seat) panniers. Would you like me to take a picture of them and upload it? ffs.

Shoplifting is out of control. Police, government aren't interested it's costing us all more.

You dont see a problem with people randomly rifling through your personal and private property, even though you've committed no offence. Maybe I'd just bough a dildo, some condoms, tampax, still ok for people to rifle through willly nilly?

Anyway, for all those on the "if you've done wrong wagon", please feed back your search experiences in the coming weeks, as this (apparently) recent new policy from Aldi is spreading fast and loose.

BobcatDreams · 04/03/2023 13:47

As you no longer have store detectives following you around everywhere (wearing a rucksack years ago and heading for the drinks aisle was catnip to store detectives before CCTV) But stores do have CCTV constantly being monitored there should be no need to be randomly searching people's bags unless they genuinely think you've nicked something.
I'd be pissed off someone rummaging through my personal belongings and I wouldn't go back in again. Luckily I don't have an Aldi.

SchoolTripDrama · 04/03/2023 13:49

Sennelier1 · 04/03/2023 09:24

Where I shop there is a card saying you should present all bags open to the cashier to check and that they have the right to look into your bags. Also in a lot of shops no backpacks are allowed (leave them at the customers desk). So I think they had every right.

What kind of a world are we living in now Confused

SchoolTripDrama · 04/03/2023 13:51

justasking111 · 04/03/2023 09:34

Seen three shoplifters. One an elderly man wearing a big overcoat who lifted some cakes. Second a young lad with a rucksack again lifting cakes. Third an elderly lady with a wheelie trolley filling it with Brita type water filters at £20 a pop.

I'd presume shoplifting has risen considerably recently

Re: the Elderly lady with her trolley, she may have just been using the trolley to transport her shopping to the till. If she uses a shop trolley, she's then got to either lift up her trolley to put inside the shop trolley or she has to risk leaving it somewhere

Crumpetdisappointment · 04/03/2023 13:58

I would hardly call checking your shopping bags an invasion of privacy, on the whole they are empty, rarely I might have gone to another shop before hand , I think it is a good idea, keep the costs down

Nah she was shoplifting. Security nabbed her.

MistyMountainTop · 04/03/2023 14:21

I had the pram tray searched once after we'd been for a walk and just popped in for some milk and bits on the way home. I did say they should wear disposable gloves whilst they did it but they didn't and regretted it 🤣

sealon82 · 04/03/2023 14:26

Happened to me In Aldi last week, also noticed the person one till over had been asked to open there bag for life also.
I don't have an issue with it really, nothing to hide. They are just following a new store policy.

neilyoungismyhero · 04/03/2023 14:45

I think I may have hit the report button on a post!
Apologies if I did completely unintentional.

lieselotte · 04/03/2023 14:57

Andanotherone01 · 04/03/2023 08:49

On a different note, my local Aldi is trying to reduce printing receipts, so now ask you if you want one. All fine, except when you get to the door a security guard wants to check your bags and look at your receipt. Absolutely batshit.

Yes, this is really stupid. A friend of my mum's had this in M&S. I would be really angry if it happened to me.

If Aldi is really treating every customer as a shoplifter now I won't bother going in there anymore. They should concentrate on finding the actual shoplifters, not intimidating their customers.

"nothing to hide" isn't a good enough reason to go along with nonsensical and lazy policies

It's also rubbish for the staff who will get even more hassle and abuse from angry customers.

Is it? I can't see how, given there is so much CCTV and other security measures.
There is zero need to treat everyone as a criminal.

FrostyFifi · 04/03/2023 15:00

We really are just accepting more and more rubbish treatment, aren't we?

lieselotte · 04/03/2023 15:02

The other issue is if you do have something in your bag which you can buy in that shop, but you bought it on another occasion.

I realised the other week that I had accidentally left something in my rucksack from a previous shopping trip. I'd have struggled to explain it away if someone had searched it.

Yes, people are so compliant. I'd have thought that the covid debacle would have made us realise that those in authority are not always right.
