Not to share my exam revision notes

Fundayout · 03/03/2023 18:49

A group of us work colleagues are sitting an exam in the summer. I’ve worked hard to go through past papers and write up the questions and answers so I’ve got them to refer back to.
The pack is about 15 sides of A4 so it’s taken a while.
Colleagues saw me printing them off and asked for copies to give to the others too! I laughed and said I might but I felt really annoyed by it. It’s taken me hours and hours to collate this information and they’ll just have that side to work through without doing anything!

AIBU or should I let them all have a copy too? No skin off my nose if they all pass etc .

Your success doesn’t depend on someone else’s failure. Share the notes

FatCatt · 03/03/2023 21:13

I’d share them

caringcarer · 03/03/2023 21:15

I'd photocopy a few pages from text book and give them those. If they want the qualification they need to do the work.

Ireallydohope · 03/03/2023 21:20

No way would I do that

I would tell them how to access the last papers though to make their own notes

Ireallydohope · 03/03/2023 21:20

Imagine also if by using your notes she got a higher mark

I'd be raging

Esp if she then got a promotion because of it too

3luckystars · 03/03/2023 21:23

Awks. I’d give them one page. Say you were making copies of the one page for them and hand them out.
Don’t say there are 9 other pages. Good luck.

ThisIsWednesday · 03/03/2023 21:23

Imagine your notes have one specific wrong answer. Maybe the knowledge was updated since the originals you've studied and made notes on. What happens when several people from the same place all give that wrong answer and everyone is suspected of plagiarism? Yeah it's not likely but why take the chance?

I'd just decline their CF request (you do all the work and they sit on their arses and pass?!) by saying your notes are rough and not checked yet so you wouldn't feel okay sharing inaccurate notes. Pretend yours is shite and they won't want it.

I’m not going to say whether you should or shouldn’t give the other people the notes but I think the point is that, by working through the past papers to prepare them, you will actually have assimilated information which will help
you do well in the exam. The fact that the have a copy in their hand/desk drawer/bag and may even stare lazily at it will not magically give them the tools to get a good mark!

Agree, they will derive very little benefit from the actual notes.

WandaWonder · 03/03/2023 21:28

I would probably help, but I also may end up needing a favour off them one day

Murdoch1949 · 04/03/2023 00:19

You've spent hours on your notes, why give them away? If it was a friend, maybe yes, but a random cheeky colleague, no. If they suggested a swap, that wouldn't be as cheeky, but this colleague is taking the piss.

ExtraOnions · 04/03/2023 00:22

It’s not a competition, if they did well you wouldn’t get a worse mark.

it’s a nice thing to do, who knows, you might need a favour off one of them in the future.

Plus, you have already done the work, it’s not like it going to cost you anymore time

Companyofwolves · 04/03/2023 00:25

I’m gobsmacked how many other PP’s think you should share them or some of them!

That’s your hard work!! Why are they entitled to it? I mean if somebody has summarised & got down another topic into an easy to revise format then surely swap notes with them (if you can be assured of their quality) but definitely not if they’ve got nothing to give on return.

tempusername1234 · 04/03/2023 00:29

To hell with that. If I'd worked bloody hard and others hadn't and wanted to use all my hard work to make up for it, then tough. I'd never expect someone to give me their revision notes and I'd never consider asking for them.

How does it disadvantage OP to share them, though? If she hands then out, then she's helping other people with no skin off her nose. It creates good standing with her peers.

I had a friend who made his uni notes available to the whole class. One girl was so impressed by this gesture that she asked him out. They are now married with 3 kids.

So op should do this in the vague hope someone marries them? 😂

Put it on Patreon and have them pay you for it.

BreadInCaptivity · 04/03/2023 01:20

Personally I'd be fine to share them because the hard work in terms of revision is preparing them and you can't replicate that.

Just reading another persons notes (however good) isn't a huge help if you haven't done the legwork yourself.

However if you don't want to share that's fine. Just say you're not comfortable with sharing your research as per uni plagiarism guidelines (you'll find a quote that fits).

Hawkins003 · 04/03/2023 01:21

@Fundayout offer an exchange of information or services for your notes?

Companyofwolves · 04/03/2023 01:23

@DifferenceEngines well in that case why bother doing any work if the OP will do it for you?

It does t disadvantage the OP by sharing them out but it does give the others an unfair advantage as they haven’t had to work so hard to achieve the end result.

If you’re pro team work & reciprocity then surely there should be something in return otherwise it’s just not really very fair?

HappySonHappyMum · 03/03/2023 19:02

Cheeky fucker alert - tell them you're happy to swap notes and you'll sort it out once they bring theirs in - which of course will never happen!

This.

You don't have to answer probing questions about how much work you've done or exactly what revision questions etc. You can just shrug and say bland stuff like Oh you know, just what I can make time for... or completely evasive "I'm so stressed about it I really don't want to talk/think about it"

If they keep pressing You could send them the link to the exam papers so that they can do this work for themselves. You could send one or two samples.
But I don't think you should be forced to turn over the whole lot to some lazy cfs.
It would be different if you'd split up into groups and everyone had done 3 questions each and pooled the results, so you could all share. You might get some different perspectives. That would benefit everybody.

And actually just reading your answers is not the same as looking at the question, working out how the exam is structured, deciding what its really asking, composing your answer, or researching it. That is what improves your exam technique and your memory and familiarity with the subject. Simply reading the answers you've put the effort into won't do that for them.

ChillysWaterBottle · 04/03/2023 02:04

Why on earth wouldn't you? What bizarre comments here.

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 04/03/2023 02:05

I wouldn't share my research revision notes widely to my colleagues. Once you give it up one or two colleagues it'd go round like wildfire forever more
My revision summary notes even to past papers would be written more concisely in my own words .

So If lots of people didn't bother doing much revision themselves and learnt from my notes, it might flag up - with everyone writing the same thoughts and phrases - as plagiarism . All To my disadvantage as they won't know I was original one who worded it.

What you can do is have a chat in general about the topic and suggest they look at papers x to y available at Z place .

Comtesse · 04/03/2023 02:41

No way! It is very cheeky to even ask and you would be a mug to share. Why help lazy, entitled people?

Emptycrackedcup · 04/03/2023 02:45

I wouldn't. In saying that I did share my notes after a course to the tutor to pass onto future students

sciencedoesntlie · 04/03/2023 02:46

I used to share my notes at uni but it got a bit out of hand when one particular colleague used to ask every time for my essays. I didn't mind too much. My mum on the other hand, used to get apoplectic with rage at the mere mention of me sharing my work 😂

PretzelKnot · 04/03/2023 02:58

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 19:09

why wouldn't you help out? They won't get the full benefit, as collating them yourself would have done a lot for your comprehension and retention, but I'd be pleased to help out
