Cyclist bad manners?

Hagridy · 03/03/2023 15:14

There were roadworks on my journey today which kept us waiting for 20 minutes so quite a few cars waiting. Just before we were allowed past a cyclist came up behind us but decided to pass us all and wait at the front. Once we were past the roadworks the road is very windy so it took a couple of miles before I could safely pass never mind all the other cars he had pushed past.
AIBU to think it was bad manners for the cyclist to whizz past us all and keep us all waiting. Most cyclists seem sensible but every now and again I come across a complete idiot who seems to think the road belongs to him.

@DingDongDenny I didn't say you shouldn't be allowed on roads.

But doing less than 10mph on narrow country roads (which they obviously are if you are holding traffic up) just isn't safe. For you or other road users.

In the nicest possible way, you need to either get quicker or stick to wider more open roads.

Maybe get the cars off the road if they are making it unsafe for vulnerable road users. Cars should just stick to the wider open roads maybe 🤔

In my experience, the cars I overtake on my bike at a junction queue have all just past me on the straight and immediately forgotten about me,( if they noticed me at all)

Often, cars overtake bikes within meters of a junction (which is queue jumping and would be considered cutting up if done to a car)

This never seems to occur to the drivers who do it.

That said, it is annoying if you get stuck behind a super slow cyclist in a car and can't pass. It particularly winds me up if they aren't pedalling, or pedalling ridiculously slowly.

If one doesn't understand that an individual shouldn't sweep majestically past a queue of people who've already been waiting for 20 minutes, push in at the front & then inconvenience every single person in the queue for some time afterwards, is one even British?😂

An analogy might be a queue of people waiting for a shop to open. They've all lined up nicely & some have been there overnight. Just as a staff member starts to open the door, someone rushes across the road & pushes in through the door shouting, "Me! I have to go first!" & then proceeds to block the aisle with their shopping trolley & a couple of pushchairs so nobody else can get in & buy anything until they've got what they want. The other shoppers just have to wait.

As for mindsets & attitudes, it's perfectly possible for humans to let off steam when it's safe & appropriate to do so, about people, attitudes & behaviours - or simply to discuss & question such things - & still treat people decently when they're face to face with them.

I fail to see how a ‘queuing for a shop to open’ analogy is comparable. In that example all
shoppers are equal yet there are obvious difference between a bike and a car. A bike is infinitely slimmer than the cars waiting and therefore they don’t have to wait because all those cars should have been at the required distance from the kerb/verge.

If cyclists are majestically sweeping past traffic, what are cars doing? Majestically dominating the roads ?

When I used to live and cycle in London it was a great pleasure to see how many times in my journey I would be overtaken by the same car, 5 or 6 was not unusual. Why do some motorists think it is a good idea to rush from one hold up to the next?

British people loving queuing so much they even drive about faster so they can join more Grin

I bet you were driving car that is 2 or even 3 abreast (maybe even carrying some spare seats about 3 abreast as people often do). If you were considerate and used a single file vehicle there would have been plenty of room to overtake.

If everyone did there probably wouldn't even have been a need for traffic lights?

Can you show me a link to such a vehicle?

@Hagridy Some brands have TV, it’s like a lounge inside the car, sofa across the back & armchair in the front. BMW, Mini, Audi have these types of set ups. Mini isn’t mini anymore, it’s got larger & larger over the years

I got several in my garage, they are really most convienent for getting around town.

Hagridy · 06/03/2023 22:37

@jgw1 i doubt I could overtake you if I were on a bike 😂 I also couldn’t fit my 11 year old child on it to get her home from school.

Why couldn't you fit an 11 year old on?
I have an 11 year old, and a single file vehicle in the garage that they regularly travel to and from school on.

Cycle with the 11 year old?

TooBored1 · 07/03/2023 08:07

Or how about driver bad manners? Cyclist face down in the middle of the road, 6th form kids from the local school assisting while waiting for ambulance/ police to arrive and car drivers insisting on driving past the victim. As in within a foot of her prone body, forcing those helping her out of the road.

Cycle with the 11 year old?

11 year old is dyspraxic so a 4 mile cycle at each end of the day would not be safe.

www.emvauto.com/solo. commuting solo car, it would free up a lot of road. With electric it makes sense to have a smaller car as less charging needed - why lug round 4 empty seats when you can commute in one seat. Or get an electric bike for commuting, easier to park/store at work or in town. Many electric bikes come with 2 seats so you can carry a passenger behind you and shopping in front

ivykaty44 · 07/03/2023 15:04

Hagridy there are ebikes for 2, so you can have both you and 11 year old on same electric bike

Hagridy · 07/03/2023 16:17

Your not convincing me I should stick a 50kg child with no balance on a bike on the road.

I think you are correct, best not to do that, have you seen the way so many people drive?
