Cyclist bad manners?

Hagridy · 03/03/2023 15:14

There were roadworks on my journey today which kept us waiting for 20 minutes so quite a few cars waiting. Just before we were allowed past a cyclist came up behind us but decided to pass us all and wait at the front. Once we were past the roadworks the road is very windy so it took a couple of miles before I could safely pass never mind all the other cars he had pushed past.
AIBU to think it was bad manners for the cyclist to whizz past us all and keep us all waiting. Most cyclists seem sensible but every now and again I come across a complete idiot who seems to think the road belongs to him.

Cyclists are annoying, entitled beings. They think the rules do not apply to them because they are on a “vehicle” which is not a car.
They seem not to be the brightest.

I think actually you are the rude, entitled human being. Cyclists 9/10 don’t do anything wrong- it’s drivers who are in a hurry and should have planned better.

do not put cyclists all into one category for a start. I also drive and can obey the law.. why can’t you?

perhaps read the rules of the road, learn some patience and just generally get over yourself 🙄

None of those roads are safe for overtaking then - in any capacity.

Cyclists (or anyone) shouldn't have to leave the carriageway (crossing the gutter, ducking into a gateway). It's ridiculous.

If the roads are really that narrow, then those logging trucks and animal feed vans will often be driving in the middle of the road, so the road is unlikely to be safe enough to travel at much speed anyway. Otherwise, the motorists could try driving a smaller car that is more appropriate for their surroundings.

This!!!! 👏🏼

@ifIwerenotanandroid there’s reason ASLs exist.

I don't think that some of these have ever noticed them 😁

What would you rather be, polite or dead?

Have I understood correctly @Hagridy that you were delayed for 20minutes because there were a lot of cars and other vehicles on the road, but that has not upset you enough to complain about the bad manners of the drivers being on your road.
But the perhaps 1 or 2 minutes that you were delayed by someone on a bike was deeply bad manners.

What sort of road was it that was big enough for coaches yet nobody could overtake one cyclist?

Nice age-shaming there too 👍🏼

It was a road with bends in it. Fine for two way traffic, but not overtaking.

And age was a relevant factor here because the elderly cyclist was extremely slow, frail and wobbly.

Everyone was patient though, despite the hold-up. Not one angry response. Very difficult though for working drivers and people with caring responsibilities etc

Hagridy · 03/03/2023 19:32

@jgw1 no you have not understood me. The road was closed for roadworks for 20 minutes without prior warning. It was then opened in both directions, so posters talking about the cyclist needing to get through before traffic came the other way are also misunderstanding. The cyclist had arrived immediately before the road was reopened so had not waited but did then hold up the traffic who like myself had waited for 20 minutes.

The important part is the slow wobbly bit still, not their age.

In the other thread on cycling today the 77 year old woman is definitely described as flying along, so being elderly doesn't mean you can't go fast, apparently

NewPapaGuinea · 03/03/2023 19:37

@Hagridy How was the cyclist meant to know you’d been sat there 20 minutes?

I think you're arguing for the sake of it. My description was accurate and objective.

I can understand how some issues can be very polarising, but it's getting a bit tedious, to be honest. Bit like a school debating club; what's the next topic? Foxhunting usually gets it going, yawn!

Ok.

So it wasn't bad manners for whoever was digging up the road to shut the road for 20minutes, but it was for a cyclist to hold you up for perhaps 1 minute maybe less.

@Mumski45 Garmin Varia.

I ve learnt a lot about driver behavior from cycling, from my partners motorcycling experience & by doing a few driving courses with work.

Yes being seen is vital but what the driver then does is v important too and people like @Arrocahar23 are the scary ones because they dehumanise cyclists.. they are "beings" and "not very bright" therefore they don't matter, if they crash, get hit and die.. so what, one less, you can read these sorts of comments on any SM post where the Police have prosecuted a driver for causing an accident with a cyclist.. many will say the cyclist deserved it.

They see you but don't care how close they overtake or the speed, a cyclist/horse ride, mum with pram? these people are "obstacles" for the likes of arrocahr23.

Would love I've but they're so much money!

I have really good lights but those are more than my road bike cost

YANBU. Whilst cyclists have the right to do that, it’s inconsiderate.
I live in a rural area with narrow roads. It’s impossible to overtake unless the cyclists pull over into a passing space. It’s extremely frustrating to be stuck behind for a mile or so when the cyclist could just pull over and let me past. I realist they don’t HAVE to pull over, but it would be the kind thing to do.
I think I find it so frustrating as there are so many cyclists now and I am so often stuck behind them.
I cycle myself but I always pull over to let people past as I know how annoying it is and I am considerate.

Why do I need to be considerate to someone floating along in a mobile living room?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/03/2023 18:01

I agree with you. I also live in rural Devon and have been stuck behind cyclists for miles, with another driver behind me getting very annoyed (hooting horn). Much less stressful for all if the cyclists would pull over.

Completely agree.

QuertyGirl · 03/03/2023 20:33

Honestly, you have heated seats, digital radio, air conditioning and are fully insulated from even a drop of rain.

Yet, car drivers still, want to be molly coddled by everyone else.

You never hear bus drivers or the emergency services moaning like this- you know, people who actually really do have to get a move on.

Car drivers on the other hand... Turn on the heated seat, stick some whale music on your poncy stereo and learn a bit of patience!

Some cyclists (like the one in the OP) should take a leaf out of our local farmers books. I've frequently been in a queue of cars behind a slow moving tractor, and when they can see a line of cars building behind them they pull into a gateway or other suitable place and let us all through with a jaunty salute. If only some cyclists were as considerate as our lovely local farmers

Completely agree with this.

Because it’s nice if we are considerate to other people. Makes the world a nicer place.

Not if my son and I are close passed and swept under a bus it doesn't

@TwilightSilhouette

On narrow country lanes you don’t get any buses. It’s a 20 minute drive to my nearest village and shop. The whole point of the thread is it’s impossible to pass the cyclist as the road is too narrow so you have to stay behind them for a couple of miles.
If you pulled over into a passing space to let the cars pass you wouldn’t get pulled under. I always prefer to pull over and let the cars pass as it makes for a nicer cycle for me - you can enjoy the quiet more.

lashy · 03/03/2023 21:10

As a cyclist; I wait in the queue at the position I joined - then, when it's lights at 2-way traffic lights for road works, I.e. a relatively short single lane, I pedal like there's no tomorrow until I reach the other end, then back to a typical cadence. I believe/ hope that I am a considerate cyclist and general road user (I don't want to hold up traffic if avoidable). I drive too and so see the situation from both sides of the fence.
