To lie on my CV?

My perfect job has come up. Its asking for experience at a certain type of company. I do have that experience but only was there for 6 months and left because my boss was hell on earth. AIBU go stretch out that 6 months to say a year/18 months?

No real way to check unless someone on the hiring panel knows someone who used to work at the other place, but even then it's three jobs ago so can't imagine they would check

I work in a creative industry so I'm not saving lives or doing anything specialist that would mean exaggerating experience might have any risks

Do people do this all the time?

I think you should apply - you have nothing to lose.

Bluebirds1987 · 03/03/2023 14:49

I think you should apply OP, it's your dream job! Of course you stand a chance, you can apply and not get it and know you did your best and you wouldn't lose anything... or you might get an interview and go on to get it! If you don't apply you'll never know. And you might regret not even trying. X

Thingamebobwotsit · 03/03/2023 14:55

Don't stretch it out. Just own the 6 months. It was 8 years ago.

These things do have a way of coming back to you if you lie. Had an ex employee claim she'd worked for me for 12 months when I'd had to get rid of her within weeks. Unfortunately for her I knew the recruiting panel and they asked for an informal reference ahead of interview.

Turned on Good Morning Britain this morning and they're debating lying on your CV - ha - www.mylondon.news/news/tv/itv-good-morning-britain-viewers-26377882

The deadline for the job is today and I'm not going to apply. I was grabbing at straws trying to think of ways to stand a chance. But I don't.

Going from lying to not applying and missing applying is silly.

The thing men do, which is documented, is apply for jobs they are under qualified to do. And they get them every now and again.

Do that.

ChunkaMunkaBoomBoom · 03/03/2023 14:56

Do it. A man would.

How would anyone know how long I've worked at some random company from 8 years ago?

I won't stand a chance if I say I was only there 6 months

Do you say don't do it because its too risky or morally it's bad? Or both?

They could contact said company and asked how long you were there! It’s quite simple!! You could possibly get the job without lying but definitely won’t if you lie so don’t risk it!

Thingamebobwotsit · 03/03/2023 14:57

Sorry just saw your update. Definitely apply. 6 months wouldn't bother me. Lying intentionally would.

Roseroserosey · 03/03/2023 14:59

Apply but just be honest about the timeframe. You stand zero percent chance if you don't even apply!

Hoppinggreen · 03/03/2023 15:01

Morally I don’t have an issue with it but I probably wouldn’t for fear of being caught.
I once changed the length of time I had been in a job on my CV and spent the whole time waiting to be caught - wasn’t worth the stress

Namechangethisevening · 03/03/2023 15:04

I had someone lie on a CV recently. We interviewed and were impressed. When we found out the lies it caused all manner of problems, but luckily we found them out before contracts were signed. It's a right pain though as you have to re-advertise etc..

Don't do it OP it's a nightmare for everyone. If you did get hired and are later found out you could risk a criminal conviction.

tempusername1234 · 03/03/2023 15:09

@MumOfTwee apply. You might not get it, but you certainly wont if you dont apply.

I'd say dont lie for two reasons. Firstly you might get caught out in the interview. If its a key skill, then they will home in on that job and want to know what you did while you were there. Secondly, you want to get the job truthfully. You don't want to get there are get imposter syndrome and think you can't do it.

I interviewed someone who had clearly lied. I gave them the opportunity to tell me the truth and they didnt and they didn't enjoy the remainder of the interview.

Good luck

They won’t check believe me. They only check last employment - everyone makes up crap at interviews. I’ve never lied but I’ve been in the same job 22yrs so not needed to but they definitely won’t check so do what you need to do I say. Good luck!

I can assure you a lot of companies DO check. I temped for years and then went temp to perm and my new employer used a checking company - it took months because they even wanted to know what I'd done in between temp assignments. (apparently 'wait for the next one' wasn't good enough, I was supposed to be able to justify even a week off). And this was for a company where I was already working.

RampantIvy · 03/03/2023 15:14

everyone makes up crap at interviews.

You need better friends. No they don't @Zanatdy

yepmelady · 03/03/2023 15:15

Never lie on a CV ever, fastest way to loose a job
Just put the dates, 6 months is acceptable for experience I it not?

chanceofpear · 03/03/2023 15:20
