To lie on my CV?

MumOfTwee · 01/03/2023 22:00

My perfect job has come up. Its asking for experience at a certain type of company. I do have that experience but only was there for 6 months and left because my boss was hell on earth. AIBU go stretch out that 6 months to say a year/18 months?

No real way to check unless someone on the hiring panel knows someone who used to work at the other place, but even then it's three jobs ago so can't imagine they would check

I work in a creative industry so I'm not saving lives or doing anything specialist that would mean exaggerating experience might have any risks

Do people do this all the time?

If you lie about this it makes me wonder what else you lie about.

Crumpetdisappointment · 02/03/2023 07:03

just put the year
although they might ignore your experience considering it was 8 years ago

Snoreboar · 02/03/2023 07:08

I have caught people lying on their CVs before - a few things didn't hang together and my spidey senses were alerted - a few phone calls later. One person whose dates didn't quite hang together, got quite aggressive - and wasn't that an even better reason for dropping that nightmare?

Marmalade71 · 02/03/2023 07:09

Such over reactions here, just put 2014-2015. Also make sure whatever you do put ties up with your LinkedIn profile. I'm in recruitment and you'd be surprised how many people forget to check that.

Snoreboar · 02/03/2023 07:11

And in our industry everyone knows everyone - lying is a dangerous game. One guy who did it became notorious - laughingly his role was referred to as the ladder holder's mate...he had suggested he managed a massive project when his role was minuscule - not many people wanted to offer him a job after that..

Everyone is holier than thou on MN.
If you know you can do the job - go for it.
Men would NOT be having this conversation. I can promise you that. I work in a 70/30 ratio of men to women.

‘Men always lie on CVs, women don’t’.

Told my 3 year old that all the "cool kids eat courgettes" last night.

Chances are you won't get caught. My ex and my dh both lied on their cv and never got found out. Lots of people do it.

Nimbostratus100 · 01/03/2023 22:10

if you get the job through lies you will never be secure - you will be living every day waiting to be sacked as soon as the fraud is discovered

No you won't. If you're doing the job well why would they ever think to check.

LisaD1 · 02/03/2023 07:14

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. I work in a non technical role but both my recent roles (one 5 years ago and most recent was last year) have done full background checks. Your start and end dates are very easy to check via tax records and both times have been checked. The most recent role even checked my secondary school dates and I left school over 30 years ago. I’d list the experience but be honest about the dates, if they want to know why they will ask in interview.

How would anyone know how long I've worked at some random company from 8 years ago?

I won't stand a chance if I say I was only there 6 months

Do you say don't do it because its too risky or morally it's bad? Or both?

This is contradictory. You are saying it doesn’t matter because it was eight years ago but then saying you haven’t got a hope without it.

Yes either it's important or it's not

Buddythecat1 · 02/03/2023 07:18

I have lied on my cv and never looked over my shoulder

passtheolives · 02/03/2023 07:21

But they want experience and I don’t see how 6 months years ago would give you the experience they are wanting?

still go for the job but there is no need to lie, explain in your covering letter how you have the experience they are wanting and the skills they need

Snoreboar · 02/03/2023 07:22

And we employ a company to do a background screening check - it goes back 3 jobs I think - although they might have changed that recently as turnover has increased. We would sack you for this.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/03/2023 05:44

Everyone exaggerates on their CV.

Why do people insist on saying this sort of thing. Dishonest liars always think everyone is at it. Same as cheats. But no, some of us don't lie on our CVs and never have.

Well said.

It's the same on threads about drugs, because everyone indulges in a bit of cocaine now and again don't they?

Nimbostratus100 · 02/03/2023 07:30

ohfook · 02/03/2023 07:14

No you won't. If you're doing the job well why would they ever think to check.

I've seen this play out in the workplace several times, and it has always resulted in instant dismissal.

Random checks are carried out, years after you have been employed, and sometime if one person is found to have got a job with a dodgy cv or reference, many old cvs and references are checked again

The other situation I have come across is a blackmail situation, when someone from the old workplace happened to be employed in the new one, and realised their manager had lied. and held it over him

In the end, it came out, and both were sacked

Emmamoo89 · 02/03/2023 07:32

I wouldn't lie

BeautifulWar · 02/03/2023 07:32

If it's 8 years and 3 jobs ago, why lie?

redundantsoon · 02/03/2023 07:44

What if it was over 20 years ago? Basic admin positions - no specific industry as such? I’ve fudged my dates a bit as was doing lots of temp work in between jobs so it looks neater?

RampantIvy · 02/03/2023 07:46

Why is having a moral compass considered pearl clutching and hand wringing by a significant minority on MN?

Don't lie. Just don't be specific, and say eg 2015 project manager at xx.

And that's lying by omission.

Greenfairydust · 02/03/2023 07:54

You don't need to lie as such...

You can simply write in your CV what the year was when you were at that company, but not state the starting and end date which is quite common in CVs, especially for older jobs.

I don't put the detailed dates on mine, so it could look like that:

  • Marketing Officer with company X, 2002 - 2006
  • Senior Marketing Officer with company Z, 2007
  • Head of Communications with company Y, 2007-2012

So the Marketing officer in 2007 could be a 6 month job but at a glance it could look like it is a year worth of employment.

It will at least help you get through the door if they want a year experience.

Don't use that company as a reference obviously and I would not lie in the interview if they ask you to confirm how long you were there for.

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · Yesterday 22:23
I work in a creative industry and everyone knows each other. The first thing they will do is call people on the projects/companies you list. Don’t even try a blag it.

So do I and no they don't. HR has always only contacted my last two employers (the ones given as references) for all my roles.

Bigsighall · 02/03/2023 07:55

I would. I would just put the years as other people have said.

MumOfTwee · 02/03/2023 07:59

@Aprilx it matters because they'll be impressed I worked there because of the status of the place so I want to promote that role. At the same time in reality It doesn't matter because working there is more about ego and profile than skill....I know I can do the job. I have all the skills necessary.
