That every one has forgotten they all hated Camilla?

I'm very puzzled why no one talks about how hated Camilla was the 80s/90s?? The tabloids absolutely tore her apart. But now she is 'Queen' and we have all conveniently forgotten. I have no personal interest in the royal family, I'm just perplexed.

My parents are about the same age as Charles and Camilla and they've never hated her. They are very religious so my mum would consider the amount of marriages Diana broke up 'on a whim' would be worse than the Charles/Camilla affair because it stayed the distance.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 28/02/2023 07:33

I dislike her actions and that remains.

Irritatingly, my mum DETESTED her in the 90s and now mildly fawns over her. I’ve realised over the last few years that my mum is very lead by media agendas though.

yhjn84 · 28/02/2023 07:35

I was a young child in the 90s, I have no idea what the tabloids said then nor do I care 🤷‍♀️

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/02/2023 07:37

I'm not convinced people have forgotten - plenty of threads here criticise her, for one thing.

Bear in mind that Diana's death was more than 25 years ago now, and the media furore over Charles and Camilla even longer ago. There's a whole generation who have grown up since then. I understand the narrative on 'The Crown' is to present C&C as star-crossed lovers who were prevented from marrying in the early 1970s by 'the establishment'. That's not correct, as Camilla didn't want to marry Charles back then, but people who didn't live through 'tampon gate' and so on may accept that version of events.

I've always been in 'camp Camilla' as I really didn't like Diana - obviously I wouldn't have wished her dead, but at the time I thought the divorce from Charles was the right thing for all concerned.

Exactly.

^^ This
ffs, not ‘everyone’ hated her, all you’re pathetically trying to do is shit stir.
Grow up. She’s been married to Charles for years.
Diana’s behaviour was every bit as bad as Charles, she constantly tried to put him in a bad light yet ‘everyone’ apparently adored her - I definitely didn’t.

taxguru · 28/02/2023 07:40

There's one hell of a difference between "Joe Public" and the media. The latter may have given the impression everyone hated Camilla but in real life, I'm pretty sure most people weren't remotely bothered. Like how the media portrayed Diana as a saint when most of the population didn't. Even long before social media, there was a big "disconnect" between the media (TC and newspapers etc) and the general public! Same with politics, hence the "shock" results in some general elections!

Catspyjamas17 · 28/02/2023 07:40

The tabloids hated Diana until one minute after she died. Then they all went on about how they loved her all that time.

Justcallmebebes · 28/02/2023 07:46

I've always been team Camilla, if I had to choose, it was Saint Diana I couldn't stomach

SammyScrounge · 28/02/2023 07:53

Sad people.store up hatred for someone they don't know on behalf of another person they never knew.

ifonly4 · 28/02/2023 07:56

I've never hated her. As another poster has said I wasn't over fussed about Diana either.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm a republican and find it very interesting how a nation can lie to itself about it's 'wonderful' non elected head of state. I remember all the tampon gate stuff. And now we are expected to think this guy is next to godly!! What a joke.

Nobody's expecting you to think they're next to Godly - but the media are the problem, not the couple.

See, what I take from “tampon-gate” is that an individual had his private phone hacked and the conversations leaked to the press…and because everyone (including you) is so heavily influenced by what the media wants you to think…people reactions centre round the content of the messages.

Rather than the true abomination which is the gross invasion of privacy that occurred.

it’s really quite interesting to watch - because he’s Charles and he cheated on his wife, a certain section of the population seem to think it’s ok to delight in the content of his private messages.

As to the rest, I never hated Camilla any more than I believed that Diana was a saint - they’re all bloody human.

Charles thought he was marrying an aristocratic young women who would know her duty was to produce and heir and spare and then she could do what she wanted - whilst he could do what he wanted and Diana appears to have gone against centuries of familial knowledge and started to believe the media fairytale of the great love story. It was tragic for both of them.

Roussette · 28/02/2023 08:03

Don't like her, don't dislike her... I have mixed feelings but one thing is sure... the Palace PR have done a brilliant job on her.

What makes me laugh is anyone who says... she seems fun, she has a raucous sense of humour, I'd love to go for a few gins with her. 🙄

WTAF. We have no idea what she is like, she could be awful company. Or great fun. We only know what we are spoonfed by the media.

SnowyPetals · 28/02/2023 08:05

Well the obvious answer is that it was 30 years ago and life has moved on.

WiIson · 28/02/2023 08:08

GobbieMaggie · 28/02/2023 03:48

Nor me. The only thing I ever found perplexing was why he didn’t marry her in the first place.

Something to do with her previous marriage / being Catholic.

Whatafustercluck · 28/02/2023 08:08

I don't particularly like her, but I think she and Charles are well matched. I liked Diana for her humanitarian work, and admired her for treating people with AIDS with respect and dignity at a time when most people avoided them - or worse, persecuted them. Charles and Diana should never have married, it's as simple as that. A prime example of how the Firm operates at the significant cost of people's wellbeing, plotting to throw people together in arranged marriages or working in cahoots with tabloids to drive a wedge and influence public opinion. Women who marry into the RF are always cast as Saint or Sinner, which can change at the drop of a hat for convenience. Just look at Kate and Meghan for a modern day example.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 28/02/2023 08:19

I haven't ever warmed to her because she never looks very warm.

Nothing to do with what happened as I was born in 89 so barely knew who Diana was when she died.

She looks like the kind of person who would push in front of you in a queue and then mutter about lack of respect.

wordler · 28/02/2023 08:19

Never hated her - she’s always seemed like the right fit for Charles.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/02/2023 08:22

I don't hate Camilla, never did, and certainly not for 30 ish years. I found Diana intensely irritating right from the start with that peeping under her fringe and coyness.

I do notice, though, the last few days, self-declared republicans (who you'd think wouldn't give a stuff about the RF and the coronation and the rest of it) coming on here to post provocative comments about Camilla and proclaim she's an adulteress and the like.

londonrach · 28/02/2023 08:23

No and people in RL you find having changed their view. It's just the RF pr team in the newspaper s...

I don't think he's next to godly. I just prefer having a monarchy and I never did hate Camilla. I think it's sad people cling on to the past when it's been years and they've shown they do work together well. The people who hate King Charles and the Queen Consort because they had an affair, I hope they feel the same way about Princess Diana and her many affairs.

Trainbear · 28/02/2023 08:26

It shows that people/ groups / races who were "hated" on the past had the hate based on lies, untruths and propaganda. As we see and experience that The Other is just like us, not vile, evil or bend on our destruction, that they actually just like us and ok. Who would have thought?

Legoninjago1 · 28/02/2023 08:28

NRTFT but i never did. I always thought it was.a tragedy they weren't just allowed to be together from the get go. Think of all the heartbreak that would have been avoided.

MissTrip82 · 28/02/2023 08:30

I don’t even think Diana hated by the end of her life, did she?

Most flawed people with enough insight to recognise it can deal with other flawed people.

I quite liked their marriage vows - they said something like ‘that is our intention’ at the faithfulness bit. Seemed very realistic to me. Acknowledging they’d failed before and hoped
to do better this time.

Snugglepiggy · 28/02/2023 08:36

Nearer her age than most on MN I would guess and been married many years .Life isn't black and white and DH and I have seen friends marriages survive allsorts -and implode.I never hated Camilla and always thought she and Charles were far better suited. As for Diana it would have been interesting to see who she ended up with, and how many more love affairs she had looking for happiness.
